You might have noticed that I'm not developing my pieces yet.
Aren't you curious about that?
Well, sure, but...
a) your queen and both bishops do have pretty good striking power, with the center relatively open as it is.
b) So far, play seems fairly close to the Rubinstein Variation of the Classical Defense to the Queen's Gambit Accepted. In the past, when you've thrown what appeared to be a deliberate red herring, it's been to the passive side of play, so all is consistent.
c) At some point you are gonna get bored enough with my inexperience to let me get enough ahead where you can really fight.
So, what's "d?"

If you answered that in the last post, I missed it...:o
Thought I'd trade queens and get forked, didja.
Nope. You seem generally less inclined to trade than I have been. When we started, I'd trade at every opportunity. Especially pawns. Get the weak stuff outta the way and go to war with the big stuff. Real Man's Chess.
But having played a few games and come to situations where "Boy, I wish I had that bishop back," I'm less likely to just try to clear the board. The balances are where the game is. (You've displayed a reaction when I've upset them without apparent reason, too.) That a pawn can frustrate a queen is part of the charm of the game, and trading pieces just to depopulate the battlefield is kinda like arbitrarily removing colors from an artist's palette. It "simplifies" things, in a way, but restricts the ability to create different scenes.
*yawn*
Whoops. Bored myself. Sorry. :D

Rather than waste half a tempo and banish my knight to BFE, I will offer a trade that I'm not eager to consummate. (see above, :o)
Seems like the correct decision, strategically. I've got some moves invested in that knight, but I was harrassing with him more than developing him...so...

I'm starting to see some of our idle hypotheses from months back being recycled. Sold, in fact. Somebody oughtta break down and buy some emitters. Or even filters, like they did in the 50's. Talking about the effects of a discrete wavelength while testing it only as a component of a broader spectrum is just lazy. Certainly inconclusive. I'd call bullshit, but I have learned to behave with some discretion by your example. ;)

'strue White is about to get skunked by a pawn.
Meanwhile. I'll jus' keep my knight's pawn safe by moving him to KKn3.
And I'm thinking of promoting to a rook, or bishop instead of a queen.
Anybody can mate with a queen and a bishop.
To mate with 2 bishops and a king, takes skill.
(Oops, no can! no want 2 white bishops.
It'll be a rook den.)
I do enjoy the endgame more when it's balanced.
Queen slaughter is just too easy at this point.
The openings are a lot harder.
There are 169,518,829,100,544,000,000,000,000,000 ways to play the first 10 moves.
Machines are better at it than people.
But, pare it down to a few pieces and the pooter's advantage is gone.

Well, if this is the part of the game you're interested in, we'll continue. I think normally white wouyld retire here, as my pawns are trapped, you're on red squares my bishop can't touch, and apparently my king can't put another king in check.
So, white must promote, too. Only one way to try dat.

Pawn chain, eh? Looks like another daylight-burning exercise to me. :(
White had problems before the rook exchange. I think my main problem came from incomplete evaluation of where the previous exchanges would leave me position-wise. I played it sorta hypermodern/Indian "inspired" if I'm correctly understanding wikipedia's breakdown of the schools of thought. Interesting how close the infighting was, once the balances and mutual deterrences were set up, compared to the initial long-reaching fianchettos and all.

The wikis are ok, but for a clear understanding of why a good opening succeeds, I recommend a book.:D
I think it was called logical steps to chess.

Once read, or tried to read, a Bobby Fischer book.

Once I discovered a whole buncha red pistils on the floor of the flower closet, which I generally keep spotlessly clean. I had a slow-finishing sativa under a hot HPS and figgered they just kinda fell out overnight, so I swept them up into a little pile and crammed them greedily into my little brass pipe.
Just as I was wolfing down an enormous hit, I heard my little brown special-needs doggie let out a contented groan. She had backed up to the 6" intake vents on the other side of the wall, and was letting the suction give her a nice grooming/massage.
That was some harsh smoke.

Bubba hash tips
Tip 1.
Is all about proper drying and curing of the sugar n popcorn before the deep freeze.
I dry well, then jar for a month, then deep freeze.
Basically, treat it like good bud.
If it's still green when ya freeze it, the end product suffers from black and green tars.
If the leaf is too fresh, the hash never dries.
Tastes nasty too. :p
Tip 2.
It's good to wait until the water is very cold before adding the frozen leaf if you want max yeild.
Trichs warm up real fast 'roun' here so I leave it in da freezer until the water's properly chilled.
Tip 3.
Recirculate.
I put the coarse bag in an insulated bucket with a drain hole.
Hermie uses a cooler.
Which is :cool:er.
When I start the top bucket/cooler, I add extra water and wait about an hour for it all to chill.
I put it up on the table so it can use gravity to drain it into the lower bucket with the rest of the bubble bags in it.
To recirculate the ice water to keep up with melting ice and to wash down the sides of the coarse bag, I use a cheapie pond pump in a bottom of the second bucket.
That water is filtered by the bags so the pump sees very clean, cold, water which it pumps to the top bucket.
That lets you control exactly how "mushy" the ice is.
And that, is the key to higher yield.
Too dry, can't stir!
Too watery, not enough "bumping" to knock off the resin globs.

Tip 4.
Hand mush!
It's not that hard when the mix is right.
I used a blender once. Very bad Idea.
Chopped the leaf into itsy bits which went through the coarse screen. Feh!
Then I tried an ice cream maker. :rastasmoke:
Too gentle. Low yield.
A large paddle or spoon and a just right ice/water ratio has made the whole process easy, productive and rewarding for me.
Yours can be driven by Tonto power.:D
That's what I got, so far.
Can't wait to see you finesse it to a science.
Topic?
Oh yeah!
Um on-topic...?
Tip 5.
When most of the water is squoze out of the hash.
Wrap it in saran and put it in the heel of your shoe.
Then take a hike.
That turns Lebanese blonde into Afghany slab.
At least cosmetically.:D
Then take one good hit, and play some chess.
See, on-topic!:D

Thanks a bunch Weezard.
Excellent tips and tutorial.
I've been doing something much different, drying the trimmings (a couple of days) then freezing the trim and putting it in a paint strainer bag. Then manually shaking it over a glass table, and collecting the kief, or trichomes.
Scarp it up and toke or vape. Or we put 7gm of keif between 2 quarters and squeeeeze in the hydralic press....blonde quarters. (the state quarters have been a kick, collecting and pressing)
I had plans to build a brass screen trommel (rotating drum) to do this, but maybe I should consider the water/ice idea...I think I saw plans to convert a washing machine....and I have one of those...:D

Too quiet.

Yet, I short-move a pawn.

BTY, that was good advice, to beef.
There's a fellow, (I think), ovah on IC that I asked to open a DIY thread for his ledengin build.
He asked us for help in "LEDGIRL's thread."

No need a weatherman to forcast that future, yah?
So I told him to open a new thread, and I'd drop by to kibitz.
He did just that.
It's refreshing to note, that he slogged through all our posts first, before asking for assistance.
And then did so with some grace. (Hence the "I think").

Well, I finally found the thread you mentioned. Sure, I'll jump in. Little late now, gotta git...

I posted a rather lengthy reply to that question in Apollonia's thread on c.dot.
They no want you posting links or hijackin' threads here, but if you search for it...
In truth, I'm kinda hesitant about posting anything here lately.
Ya know what I mean?
Ya know, L.gurl is a mod/advertiser on another board, also. (Grnpassn) Same tactics there. I remember when the "civil-disobedience-for-lunch-bunch" would have rejected all this hype/marketing B.S. as "establishment." :hippy: Obviously, our willingness as a society to be fed propaganda has blossomed to match our reluctance to conduct any kind of experimentation with proper controls.
Lemme study your sneaky little chess move and see what this may transpose into. Once the first few moves are over I just play it by ear, but I like to study the openings. It's like learning a new piece on an instrument that you already know how to play.
I was tempted to do B - QB4 on my last move just to feel how that plays out, but I just didn't like the "feel" of it. Looks like another cueball scratch. :D

Good instincts. There are better moves than that.

Hmmm what made that pawn worth taking?
Look to your vulnerabilities.
You dismantled you king's side castle early-on, so I can start gearing up to dismantle your queen's side now.

Hey, curiousity works for me. (Gutshots woulda been interesting, kef, kef...) I just noticed a pic of the light that shows the emitters in small groups, exactly aligned with the 6 cooling fans. The best reason I can think of to do dat is to compensate for inadequate heatsinking. You a bettin' man?

I realize it's not ideal to castle with a pawn or two missing. But might it be still be worthwhile to castle kingside, considering where it puts that rook? I guess I need to consider the pawn's defensive capabilities. (I got all swept up in having discovered promotions and pawn chains.) Looks like you think I've blown a hole in the side of my castle already...
P.S. Is there a quick to suppress the signatures?

Hell, I'd dry 'em brittle, bag 'em, and beat 'em with sticks.

True dat.
Direct application of anything to ingestable parts of my girls is on my nevahdo list.
But more germane is the bad news my research turned up.
The best control is natural enemies, and just about anything you can use on weed is harder on the predators, than on the prey!
Makes it counterproductive.
Only harmless control I saw was yellow sticky traps.
They don't do much damage and they do indicate when a plant is in trouble.

Hey DH, I liked the hash nickle and thank you for explaining that you use the extruder as just a press. I had visions of strange shapes like stars being extruded. I'm already using a 10 ton hydralic press to form "quarters" (7 grams of kief pressed between two quarters) of hash.:)
Yo Weez, I have been amazed at what I've seen with the eyeclops. The best example is looking at the collected kief. I always thought the first shaking was the "cleanest" and subsequent shakes where darker because they were "dirtier" from pieces of leaf etc. But after looking at things closer it appears that the bottom trichs fall off first, to produce a very blonde product and later shakings has more amber to it and is darker. And not that much (as I had thought) other material.
BTW for indoor pest control, I like DH's idea of pepper balls in a paintball gun! Just make sure you wear a gas mask when you go to do battle!:D

Black is 2 pawns up, but they were costly.
If you can hang on to the 4 move tempo advantage, this game is in the bag for ya.
A good illustration of how early Queen deployment and neglected piece deployment can cripple your mid-game.
Don't help black develop any pieces, or let 'im catch his breath.
Force moves that mess up co-protection positions and crowd black into a tight defense.

Back?, Good!
Very good news on the polycarbonate greenhouse roof!
Transition lenses darken under it about the same as they do in open sunlight, so I assumed that it was transparent to UVb.
'Til one of my girls matured under it.
No, amber!
No tan!:wtf:
Went from water clear to mostly cloudy, to all cloudy, to we're out of room here.
Brought her up to the lanai for a 6 hour tan that gave them a uniform yellowish tint.
Then chopped and hung.
Only took 4 days to dry to "snap-off"!
Dude!
The same genetics that merely kicked my ass have gone into the "Gotta spend the night" stash.
And that was raw!
Now I have the led advantage under sunlight, and I'm thinking that tanning requires a shorter wavelength UV than I had thought.
That, or that the darkening involved infra-red. Hmmm...
Gonna dig out my bulk E-prom wiper and a hunk of the poly and do some pokin' around.
Dang! Things are getting interesting.
When this cures properly...
I will find a way to get some to you.

And black's only "up" one pawn--I just got one of urine.
Good to get a smoke report. I'm still curing my UV test buds. Preliminary samples were inconclusive. The exposed buds and unexposed controls were all taken from the "soil" indica in the soil/coco shootout. The differences between those UV-exposed buds and the shaded buds are miniscule compared to the difference between this plant, and its sister clone grown in coco (the "other" plant in the shootout. The winner, actually...;) )
The coco plant yielded easily double the soil plant, and grew its trichs a bit differently. They seemed larger, and continued to be produced over a longer time frame. So there were always lots of fresh, clear caps even though the older caps were totally mature. The older caps didn't seem to degrade, even though I did get some beautiful browning (15 reds + 3 blues :D). Actually, all the led plants grow that way; the coco gal was just a bit more so.
I will have to continue this thought later. :stoned: :D

15 reds 3 blues and nothing else?
Well, (kef, kef) I'm dealing with some slow-maturing strains. Of course, I tweak and adjust allaway through. So, over a long time frame like that, hermie's gotta play around a little. :o
I did an all-LED "test grow" under just a Procyon and my 6 + 2, right after I retired my 400 watt HPS. I pretty well matched the 400 with that setup, and since I was used to dealing with all that HPS heat I added some 3000K fluoros for sidelighting and topside supplementals at the edge of my primary light footprint. I would rather have just added more leds, but I got too sick to build anything for awhile there. It didn't make sense to me to hamstring my production just so I could wave a "100% LED grown" banner, so I just added the extra fluoros: a coupla 3000K 2' T5HO's (48W total) and about 80 watts (actual, Hermie don't play dat million-watt-equivalent crap) of 3000K CFL's. That "didn't hurt anything," but it didn't have much positive impact, either. It was real clear that the action was happenin' under the 660's.
So, when I was well enough I built another light (7 + 1) and added a couple more reds to the 6 + 2. So there's my 15 + 3. This whole system was still below the HPS heat-wise, so I added a couple 2x2' T5HO lights for 96 more watts. Not 'cause I needed them, but I was used to dealing with all that heat from the HID--so I lit 'em up, just cause I had 'em. :D So, I had ~225W @ 3000K T5/CFL, with maybe 350 watts of LED, including the Procyon. At that point heat started becoming an issue again.
I positioned the fluoros very close to various buds (IMO, the only way they work well) and marked pot positions so I could keep things relatively consistent--certain areas got blasted with fluoro long term, other areas received only what I ASSUME was an inconsequential amount of reflected 3000K light. It appeared that the best bud development and the finest trichs occurred in the areas receiving the least "accidental" white light (almost zero) and the strongest dose of 660 red.
For late flowering, in general, I wound up disconnecting one of the blues on the 8+2, and running the remaining single blue on each lamp at low intensity. For finishing an 'outdoor' sativa I cut the light cycle by an hour (went to 11 on / 13 dark), turned the remaining 2 blues down to "idle" and backed off most of the reds a bit, too. (But that plant was nearing the end of her life cycle when things naturally slow down.) By this time I had removed the Procyon--it didn't appear the plants were even noticing it when I had the 660's cranked up, other than to stop stretch to the point of inhibiting vertical growth.
I left the T5's in there for work lights and photos, but didn't run them unless I had the bloomery all opened up --the power use and heat production didn't seem justified by any improved plant responses. So: there was some WW light in the bloomery from time to time, but it didn't seem to be doing anything that justified the added heat. (EXCEPT creating "stickybud"--a separate topic :D)
The bud pictured below was dead center under the 660's, right between 2 blues, too. (And well away from any fluoros.) I was getting leaf-bleaching and light-avoidance, and wound up disconnecting one of the blues and raising the light a bit. There's a "saturation point" for cramming high-power emitters onto a 100in^2 heatsink, at which you have to raise the light more than 6" above the plant tops OR drop the current below 1200mA. In my grow space, with the mutt genetics I have, that point is at 7+1. Cramming an 8th red emitter on the sink still gives a great bloom ratio, but unless I were to spread them out further on a bigger heatsink the light is too intense. Raising the lamp lets the light spread too much (IMO), and running the emitters at half-power is really poor planning.
This is a concept I'd like to get across to JJ: now that we have the ability to overwhelm a plant with light, we need to be start being real selective with our colors. Even the Procyon can't compete with the 660's for flower. Not even close.
I know you, WT, and Appolonia have all experienced the light-overload phenomena. (The lenses on the Procyon's Crees make it easy to do.) The bleaching, stalled growth, and "ram's horns" (as Appolonia called it) are hard to miss. I don't recall reading anything similar from Old Mac, but it's hard to imagine he hasn't made some reefer plants say "uncle" with his T1's, too. Trying to explain this to a close-minded LED sceptic is difficult; no one who's got a lasting impression of leds as novelty panels is going to believe this is possible--"Too much light? No such thing..." :yeahright:
But this bud? LED grown only (aside from the above-confessed incidental WW pollution) with what I decided later was "more blue than necessary." The Goddess rolled a joint with some of this bud last night, thinking it was something less potent. By the time we figured out she had been nosing around in the wrong jars....
*Uh, oh...*
I could hardly move my hands. I shudder to review whatever chess move I may have made. I also lost a day again. :stoned:

I was about to start futzing with infra red along with the UV.
What you just told me is that mercury vapor will output a short enough wavelength to rust-up some trichs.
(I should know that.)
And IR is probably not a player.
This means I can tan them indoors if need be.
Lot easier to quantify than sunlight over time, yah?
Just took a test bud from the greenhouse WW.
Takin' some snaps as it dries in the dark.
Then put the donor out in the sun onna lanai.
I'm taking some macro shots of the her in sunlight every hour to see what's too much and how fast they brown.
Then I'll have a benchmark for my QMV tube irradiation.

And your right about the skeptics, first it was LEDs don't work then if they see that they do it becomes something else...like my partner.:wtf:
Yo Weez, you are right that there is no magical missing chord when it comes to a good 2 color LED light....but there might be just a couple of extra notes that could sweeten the tune.
Have you guys read "the PAD manual" and what do you think? Can someone explain it?:D

All led. Not enough light though. Just my 6 + 2 and a Procyon in a 2 x 5' scrog (a deep one :D) These plants were a little scraggly cause they were very crowded. Ran them 13-14 weeks, which is usual for this strain, except with adequate light they look like the pic above ^. I would normally just let them keep ripening trichs and adding new ones, but I wanted to ungrade the lighting and get some others started so I harvested these "twin sisters."
EDIT: Hey, you can probably tell, but these were shot on the living plant. Trichs on the cured bud pick up some opacity as they age, seems like.

That coco plant's a nice size. Nice pot size, too. You can prolly skip a day watering with dat if you need to (indoors, anyway.)
I picked up a "Dutch table" the hydro guy called it. About a meter long, like a little horse trough. Has a molded-in drain channel. Sposta hold big blocks of rockwool, but gallon milk jugs fit it perfectly. Thinking of doing hand-watered drip-to-waste in coco next time, using these troughs. Raise 'em up off the floor a ways, incline slightly for drainage, and drop a drain hose into a runoff bucket. Once ya get dat dialed in ya hardly even need to check it any more. Just mix yer nutes according to recipe, and water to generous runoff. Use dat onna veggies. Easy enough to automate with drippers (for short-term) if necessary, too.
Just want something bigger than a gallon--thassa mandatory daily watering. Found some kitty litter in plastic jugs that are like a couple milk jugs side-by-side, little fatter, too... I'm just annoyed by how roots develop in rectangular pots. What you think?

Hey DH, that is one very ambered closeup and just red and blue? Honestly the first time I've seen that occur....wonder if it's a product of just being dead nuts at peak red or...you sure no far red or something?:wtf:
I think St. Zard thinks my little fluoros did it. Actually, that bud was a couplathreefour inches taller than the rest. Always had it too close to the lamp while the rest of the plant was a tad out of the sweet spot. Finally got annoyed enough with it to whack it off, and noticed it seemed "further along" than the rest of the plant.
BTW I have said the TI's will stop a plant in it's upward tracks. Seemed like I remembered that, but I didn't wanna put words in your mouth.
So, here's my UV test I did back when da sun had some UV to it. This was to observe the effect of short-term UV exposure on led-grown buds; looking for some possible flash-fry ambering of trichs. The proper way to do this would be with two live plants, exposing one to sunlight and not the other, and just compare them. But, I can't be wandering around here with plants under my arm, so...
I took 5 more buds from that same plant, trimmed the lower leaves and cut the stems at an angle:
[attachment=o233660]
Then, I stuck them in a block of Oasis Cube (the stuff florists use to keep cut flowers alive in arrangements) that I'd pre-saturated with pHed water. I figured those buds wouldn't know they'd been cut off for awhile.
[attachment=o233663]
Then, I set them asail in a bucket of cool, pH'ed water and set them out in some serious sun from 11am to 3pm. About half that time has hazy/light overcast, but there was plenny full rays. Human bean woulda been burnt up.

Perhaps you could interest the neighbors in a new green buglight for their porch. Tell 'em green is the new yellow(?) I suppose blaming the local kids for vandalism via BB gun is outta the question...
So you and Mac think the UV in my fluoros may have caused all that amber, huh? That might explain why I got "marginally better" results supplementing leds with 6500K over 3000K.
I never really ran the fluoros much; the heat didn't seem worth it. But if the fluoros are that effective in browning trichs, I say fire 'em up, IF browning this way makes a difference, smoke-wise. Sure doesn't seem to take much, just a CFL or two.
I may have some I grew under T5's (only). Gotta check those trichs, you guys have got me rethinking this.
As for that really amber cola, that's it just about touching the heatsink. It was slammed with led power, but kinda outta oomph range of the T5's, which I probably had lit just for the photo.

Are you talking about me here..? If so... I've had my share of pesticide problems in the past and have tried neem oil once or twice with some success. Sorry for my ignorance but what's dawn Weezard was referring to? If I remember correctly I had no pest problems that time, but I did use a growth booster spray that someone gave me. That was for veg only. Once flowering started I stopped using it and altogether sprayed the plant twice in veg. It was alcohol based. I guess them plants don't like the booze.. I think it was alcohol of some sort, urea and probably something still.. :wtf: Could that cause the bleaching of the tops a few weeks later? Other than that it was like magic :D Huge leaves...

The poster sounded desperate, and went to the trouble of filling out the troubleshooting form (which saves anyone trying to help from having to play "20 Questions"). "Dawn" is a dishwashing detergent advertised as a "grease-cutter." Noob growers like to try it (only once, usually :D) as a horticultural surfactant, presumably because they've seen other noobs suggest it.
I don't really have enough info to answer your question about the "booster spray." Please fill out the form... :p  :lol5:

This is about 4 hours after I brought them in:

And, at 5 weeks after sun exposure. The sun buds have an earthier taste, possibly more "bitter" than the indoor control buds. (Pics of them coming sometime...) Goddess prefers the smoother smoke of the indoor only buds, as do I (I think). Sun exposure seemed to create a flavor a bit like un-flushed nutes. Hard to evaluate though, as one hit kinda skews yer perception for awhile. I'm sure you unnerstand...:stoned:

My carpenter/friend came over on Christmas day to do some painting, etc.
It was a good morning.
He had to leave after lunch time and it was wonderful to have the solitude

Now, you have a problem that will tie up your strongest rook.
And take pressure off the center of the board.
That rook covered 9 squares, now just 5, or 6 if you count the protected pawn.
Your other rook is severely limited.
Your Knight covers 3 squares and your bishop, 5.
It was a decent attack.
Just needed a little more pre-launch set-up.
It's a good stratagy to plan your attacks for possible failure.
That is, plan it so failure will leave you in a better position than ya started with.
Sometimes, what appears to be an attack, is actually sneaky positioning for the real attack, ya?.

Hey, I just found another jar of plant 3-13: the buds. What I was scopin' out before for brown trichs via 100% LED was just the popcorn, and these plants were underlit (Procyon & 6+2 only, covering 10sq.ft.). Of course, they were in 12/12 for 93 days :(, but this strain took that long under HPS, too.
Peep these buds, and tell me LED doesn't tan 'em nice. :thumbsup:To be fair, there is absolutely no way these trichs were this amber when I harvested the plant. 20-30% amber's fine by me, especially under leds (which don't really get a living plant much browner, seems like). So the tanning/maturation/ WTF-ever musta continued during the curing process. [attachment=o234240][attachment=o234241][attachment=o234242][attachment=o234243][attachment=o234244]

Drat!
Looking back, that pawn is on your Kn3.
Nevermind.
I was tempted then to trade for your bishop.
He's your strongest piece at the moment.
Then remembered that I was demonstrating/playing-with, a "Knight's dance"
Get both sides to stable positions, then send in a knight to lay waste.:D
So, getting on with it.
N - KB7
Annoying your rook.
The continueation is not obvious, nor carved in stone, but, it looks like R -R2 is the safest move.
(When I examine the other choices, they all lose the rook in the next 3 moves.)
So, assuming;
R - R2,
I'd have to say N - K5, threatening your pawn.
Your rook can not cover the pawn from R2, so you'd have to move N - KB5.
'cept, if you do, I'll move P - KN3 to force his hand.
You will then see what looks like a brilliant move;
N - R 4!? interposing himself to block the protecting rook.
Then I parry, with N - KN4 to protect the pawn. and...
Or, not.
Howzit look to you?

If it's that old, Wurd97, then a rigorous internal dusting and a CMOS battery replacement are in order, yah?
The coin cells only last 3 to 5 years.
Time to replace da cpu fan as well.
Symptoms?
Already cleaned. I've always run it with the side panel removed from the case for ventilation, too.
I see that coin cell in there, looks like it may be soldered in place, but that won't stop me... :pimp: What does that battery do besides keep an internal clock going? If I replace it, what'll I have to reset besides the time...what valuable might be lost is the real question, I guess. (I can hot-swap it if that's necessary.)
When I looked at CPU coolers as a possible LED platform it became clear there's a new generation (or three) of stuff out there. Nothing readily available to replace this part with, that I saw around. And the local parts-hoarder repair guy's closed his shop. But I'll be able to hear the blissful silence if that fan croaks, so not an immediate worry.
Symptoms...Well, about a month ago I started getting a "cannot find login.exe" dialog box when it starts up (I guess that's a monolog box :D), but I can just push through that and it runs okay. Freezes up a tad more frequently than usual, but still workable. Trying to keep multiple apps open is a bitch, though--runs slow and glitchy.
Within the last 3 days or so, though, it's been shuting itself off, suddenly, and restarting. When it comes back it's got a "Your system has recovered from a serious error" with some available codes, looks like short hexadecimal strings. Can probably save the message somehow...
Also see the "blue screen of death" flash on-and-off too quickly to read as the thing's crashing. Doesn't look good, though.
Happens generally after it's been running a few hours, maybe thermal's a factor(?) Cooler ambient operating conditions lately, though, thanks to the nippy weather.
I remember upgrading the RAM years ago, from half to a gig (total), and this motherboard won't take any more, seems like the shop that sold me the memory thought I was silly to 'waste' it in this machine back then.
But getting a Mac's (laptop) gonna be inevitable, just cause of the program I need to run. It's not like I've ever been nuts for the PC platform...but I've never used a Mac. But how bad can it be, comparitively?
You gotta pick between the (newer) Macbook or the (older release) Macbook Pro?

Already cleaned. I've always run it with the side panel removed from the case for ventilation, too.
Not as good an idea as one might think.
If a "sheen is designed right, it "breathes" Mo' betta with the panel in places.
Zachary!
Replace the cell with the power on.
Though there is usually a backup capacitor that gives you >15 minutes to change the cell.
And it's the holder that's soldered in.
The coin cells lift and slide out of it.
(The only ones soldered in were the rechargeables and the mega-caps.)
But, they're kinda rare.
Not that big a deal really.
Besides the clock, the Battery holds the CMOS setup info.
Worst case?
It resets to the defaults and you have to reset the clock and the drive geometry. BFD.
Even then, they default to "query the drive".
Actually, it's more often the Video card cooling fan that gets "gummy" first
(Pot smoke is gummy stuff.)
Slows down enough to let the card overheat and crash the system.
Symptoms...Well, about a month ago I started getting a "cannot find login.exe" dialog box when it starts up (I guess that's a monolog box :D),
That's prolly network login.
but I can just push through that and it runs okay.
From your symptoms, I'd suspect the hard drive is having senior moments.
Let's find out.
Goto <Start>, <Run> and type "Command" or "CMD"
in the box.
That will get you a DOS command prompt (The dark place).
At the prompt, type in "CHKDSK C: /F"
It will whine about files being in use and ask if it can run on the next startup.
Type "Yes" and hit return.
Type "Exit" to leave the Dos window and then re-boot.
This will perform a thorough test and repair of C: at the next boot.
I think you'll be pleased.
I made a good living trouble-shooting PCs.
Why? 'cause they have more trouble to shoot.:D
You gotta pick between the (newer) Macbook or the (older release) Macbook Pro?
Ah dunno!
Never owned one.
Though I did have one of the prototype Lisa cases that my buddy dug out of Apple's dumpster.
I stuck a Green/black crt in it and hooked it to a homebuilt Xerox 820 16 bit CP/M motherboard.
Built that into an ornate wooden case cobbled from an antique radio that also held 2. 8" floppy drives.
Looked like a fat Mac sitting on a baroque chest of drawers.
But, I digress.
Aloha.

I checked the C drive as you suggested. It verified files, indexes, and security descriptors then the "usn journal." (My computer's full of seamen )But how do you slow down the scrolling info? I was able to pick out the words "allocation" and "free bits/bytes" but it was gone in a flash.
Then this slow-ass thing just fired up like usual. The one time it actually runs fast...
No fan on the video card. Seems like I had a glitchiness that somebody said, "Ahh, yer video card's prolly goin' out," like a year ago, but now I can't remember what that problem was...The heatsink on the video processor is warm, but not screamin' hot. It's definitely not catching much air movement, whether the case is assembled or not. I should probably put a loose fan in there.

And did it still not find Login.exe?
If so, then it's time to replace damaged system files.
There's a little known gem called SFC (System File Check)
that will examine and replace damaged system files like login, exe.
You'll need a location to get the files from.
I usually copy the install CD to a directory I call Everet Ting.
before installing windows.
The install is faster, and it remembers that directory instead of asking for the original CD should you want to add or subtract windows modules/services.

And did it still not find Login.exe?
Well, it stopped and gave me that error message box, as is usual (now). (All you do is click "OK" and you proceed as normal, no big deal.)
I'm pretty sure I've got the original discs for Windows. They hadda lotta service paks and such patched on over the years, though. I actually have XP on this though. Musta been like a early Beta version. :D
