Italy Indicts American Soldier for Shooting of Italian in Iraq

An Italian judge has indicted an American soldier for the shooting of an Italian intelligence agent in Baghdad in 2005. The soldier will be tried for voluntary murder. He is expected to be tried in absentia. Sabina Castelfranco reports for VOA from Rome.

Mario Lozano of the U.S. Army's 69th Infantry Regiment is being charged with the fatal shooting of an Italian intelligence agent at a checkpoint in Baghdad in March 2005. A judge in Rome Wednesday ordered that Lozano be tried for voluntary murder.

The agent who was killed, Nicola Calipari, had just secured the release of kidnapped journalist Giuliana Sgrena. The agent and the journalist were being driven to Baghdad airport when the U.S. soldier opened fire and fatally wounded the agent. The journalist was wounded.

Excuse me? I dont know who Pat Tillman is, but im sure as hell not happy he's dead. Why would i cheer that he was killed by friendly fire? You think that im happy when America looks incompetent, you think i find it funny? Because i dont, especially when it results in loss of life, whether that be British, American or the life of an innocent Iraqi citizen. And i accept that accidents happen in war, but when the American government covers up such incidents, such as in the case of Pat Tillman and Matty Tull, well that is truly abhorrent and disgraceful. The least that these people deserve is that their families receive an accurate report of the events leading to the deaths of the husbands sons or fathers. They deserve to know the truth about how their loved ones died.

And i agree, peace is a dream. I dont object to all war, because sometimes war is necessary. But i do object when a war is started under false pretences...and im sure you won't agree, but radical islam didn't start the war in Iraq. The war in Iraq started because Saddam stopped being friends with the U.S, and an invasion was necessary to protect their interests in the Middle East, primarily oil, and the interests of Isreal. Before you start blaming radical Islam for the confilct in the Gulf, please remember that Osama Bin Ladens Afghani Jihad was funded by the CIA during the 80's to combat the Soviet influence in Afghanistan. The backlash or radical islam is a response to repeated and numerous american interventions in the middle east. It didn't come out of nowhere. And i dont disagree that Saddam was pure evil, and deserved everything he got. But was the toppling of his regime really worth the result, plunging Iraq into a bloody sectarian conflict that has no forseeable end? However much you supported the war, bong30, you can deny that it has been a fuck up of the highest proportions.

Please excuse me for ranting and raving, but i have strong views on this matter,especially when it means that my countrymen are being killed in a war that we shouldn't be involved with in the first place.

in response to this, your totally missing the point. My point was that IF the US HAD been in the league, it might have had the power needed to stop Hitler. And i dont mean defeat Hitler during WWII, i mean itmightve had the power to effectively apply economic or military sanctions to prevent Germany rearming and breaking the rules of the Treaty or Versailles.

And i agree, without the USA, the league was almost totally useless in dealing with even the smallest conflicts.

1. germany was making many illegal underhanded agreements with other countries which would not have been affected by this ban (IE USSR)
2. germany's economic growth was almost entirely due to internal reform and a move to build up its own infrustructure

Well after kicking some Brit ass in 1776 and 1812 then being of the forgiving nature decided to help ya all out in WW1. I would imagine that we held off a bit and saw if the lil' dog could do it on their own but Pearl Harbor was the key that told us that the big dog was NEEDED again. yeah nice comparison....you may be in the UN, but the US only contributes 350 peacekeepers, out of a total 95 000, meaning that they have about as much involvement in the UN as in the League. And regardless of Germanies dealing with other nations, if America had been part of the league then this fact alone would have been enough to make Hitler think twice about expanding into europe, considering the industrial and military power of the US.

You neglected to mention that Britain had a "little help" as well, well before the French helped the Americans.

England had purchased "Hessian" troops, from six principalities in GERMANY - early in the War.
