True but if your a selfish bastard then you dont have to lol
You a waiter, Jagged Edge? I used to be one when I was a kid in college, and I always tip well. It always bugs me when others don't do the same thing if they got good service.
Yeah i have to do that crap in college aswell lol i hate being on your feet all day its hard work
I always tip at least 15%. If service is incredible I'll go as high as 25%.
That being said, if the service I recieve is not up to par with what I think it should be, then I'll deduct it from the tip. If I sit at my table for 15 minutes with an empty glass, well then that waiter isn't going to get 15%.. if my waiter is horrible, I won't even leave one (which is rare.. only happened once or twice).
I used to be, now I work in the dish room at a resturant. More work and a little less money, but I don't have to deal with shitty customers. I have waited tables and I usually tip really well.
As for tipping less if the service is bad, I understand. But you have to think about if it is the servers fault or the kitchens. It also pisses me off when someone gets free shit from you for what ever reason and don't show anything for it with the tip. I have given customers free meals before and they still leave a fucking dollar.
Watch "waiting"
Great movie.
Oh and I posted this because I saw a shit load of doallar tips and all change tips tonight at work. It pisses me off when it is a coworker I like too. I would say that is about 75%, I like most people.
Look, someone is "waiting" on you. They are providing for you. People should want to tip someone serving them well as a thank you. Good service deserves a reward, no other job field beside prostitution has someone act as your slave for the hour or say it takes. Well maybe there are more, but keep in mind, your server is most likely getting paid 2.13-2.15 an hr.
And I can understand if your in another country. I think it's France where they don't tip at all. I'm sure there are other coutries the same. But in america it is socially dictated you should tip. And that my friend is the way it should be
I just thought about Reservoir Dogs. Great movie.
I am a great tipper. Living in New York, you learn to be.
I think 15% percent is bullshit. If you think about it, the amount of your food depends on the amount. It isnt any harder to carry one plate of food versus another. Or if you have alot of people with you. All of thier food will raise the tip even higher. The waitor or waitress it already coming to that table so there is not really that much more work. I think 5% does it. Maybe less dpending on the quality of service.
i feel 10% is enough
Yeah, I always make sure my tip is reflective of the waiter's service and not the kitchen. I completely understand that it is not the waiter's fault if my steak is overcooked, or if my mashed potatoes are cold. While I'll let the waiter know that my food isn't up to my liking, it won't come off the tip.. unless of course, like I said before, the service isn't great. :)Quote:

it all depends on the service. Good service and everything then higher tip then a snarly bitchy old woman
Then you should stick to McD's BK, KFC and Taco Bell.Quote:

Being a former waitress, I always give at least 20%.Quote:

I think what people have to realise is [at least around here anyway] waiters and waitresses make LESS than minimum wage because their employers are counting on them making tips. Now, they need these tips just to make a bit more than what minimum wage even is, and that is rough
That is actually not true everywhere.Quote:

however the tip i wish to leave isn't proportional to the service i get, it's more proportional to how drunk i am at the time... lmao... usually i'd leave a 3-5 dollar tip for a waiter, first time me and my wife went to a bar (shortly after i turned 21) i ended up wanting, and actually tipping the particular bar tender i kept going back to, 10 bucks... needless to say he was very happy about the tip.. but he was hooking my wife up (one after another) with a 7 dollar drink for 4 bucks a pop...
i thought about asking what he puts in them, but figured that'd probably be rude, or something along those lines... it was damn good, i know he used about 7 diffrent liqours, some pinapple and either water or sprite... only thing i know about the drink for sure is that it used something blue, not hypnotiq... he made it up himself... lol my wife got so drunk that nite i had to undress her and put her in night clothes... never in my life have i seen someone so FUBAR'd AND they didn't even puke... i've been more FUBAR'd then most people could ever hope to be, but i ended up puking everytime....
dunno about where you live, but around here everyone's a cheap ass, doesn't matter how much the waiter/ress kisses ass, people rarely even leave a tip... hell i feel like i'm overpaying by leaving a 3-5 dollar tip (that usually works out to be about 10% which i think is fair..)Quote:

Our minimum wage is 7.50(possibly bumped up to 7.80 in Jan)..it's really high. I have been a waitress at a few places and all your tips are not included in your hourly wage. However 8% of your wages and tips does have to get counted for for taxes which kind of screws ya over if you aren't making a lot of tips.
I have friends who work in restaurants who claim that after their tips they make an average of 30$ an hour. Pretty nice. I plan on getting a sweet cocktail waitressing job next.
minimum wage went from I think $6.85 to $7.50 in the last couple years, and by 2010 or something it's supposed to be $8.75Quote:

My state I think has the 2nd high minimum wage of the US.
Pretty sweet.
Especially considering federal minimum wage is 5.15.
holy crap 5 bucks? for some people thats like wasting 2 hours of pay just to get to and from your damn job
"buy this car to drive to work
drive to work to pay for this car.."
To me, there are several levels of dining out.
First-There is the fast food slop that you don't tip for anyways
Second- There are the places like Dennys. Perkins, IHOP, Waffle House ect...
those places only pay minium and the kids and older ladies that staff there try hard for the abuse I've seen thrown at them. They deserve at least a few bucks if you're gonna take up a table.
Third. The Family restaurants, be they chinese, greek, Italian, Jewish, Indian ect....these are nice meals. These deserve at least a 15% tip if not more. Food made with love is the best.
Fourth- We have our suit and tie and little sexy black dress on ,we have the valet park our car and we start off with a nice bottle of wine that the sommilier recommended. There is candlelight and the lights are dimmed. The ambience is wonderful, the curls of butter atop crushed ice is lovely as is the relish tray. We order the beouf wellington for two and have a fantastic night.
15-20% doesn't even begin to cut it in this instance......This is a special night and for a special night, you need to pay up. This is a night that you have to be happily ready to part with a $50 at least.
Yep..and some of those places include the tips as the hourly wage. Really messed up.Quote:

note: we usually pay 15%-20% when the service is good.
Haha i worked in a little diner and I actually told this dude I wasn't serveing him. He eventually left, but I wasn't going to wait on him and I was the only server there. We were able to refuse service to anyone, not sure how legal that is... He was one of those assholes who tries to run you ragged. Than I give him free coffee for his and extra waffle because I fucked up on one. The asshole left nothing. So next time he came in I didn't get him shit. I broke up with a girl over this before.Quote:

lol in texas, minimum wage is 5.15, and believe me when i say, most jobs here will do everything they can to keep it at 5.15... i really don't understand why nation wide companies should be able to rake in on the states that pay 5.15... i'm sure in other states they're charging the same price for food/service that the 5.15 per hour charge, but the workers are getting (usually) way less then every other store (other then ones in that particular state) in the chain are getting....Quote:

anyways do you folks realize the some of these waiters are busting thier ass and some only make 2.13 a hour and have kids to feed
should they maybe seek different employment??? yes
but maybe thats all they can do at the time, they hurry to get your food, manage sometimes 7-15 different tables and know what all people are having...
this takes a certian amount of skill....
and for 2.13 a hour..... you should atleast acknowledge thier hard work (if you reicieved good service)
BF you make alot of good posts (and im not flaming on you)
but people with your opinion, is the reason why alot of waiters treat people like shit, theyre just returning the favor
i have a couple of friends that are single mothers and are still in school and untill they get a education/degree that is all they can do (some people dont have a extensive resume like some of us)
so lets think and have alittle love???huh
I partially agree with what RonJohn and a few others have mentioned about low wages, but there comes a point when those individuals making that $3-4 bucks an hour shouldn't fully depend on good tippers to get them up to the federal minimum wage around $5-6. It's like if you know that job has piss-poor wages, why would you continue to work it lol.
I've felt for years now that the fed. minimum wage needs to increase in a big way. I know plenty of people who work full-time making only enough to scrape by, and with our booming economy, minimum wage MUST reflect that and keep up. And it's not keeping up, people are getting screwed by the system, and it's pissing me off =)
If I go out to eat, which is becoming more of a rare thing, I don't ever calculate how much to tip. If I liked the waiter/waitress and they were attentive, I'll give 'em say $5-6 bucks, but if service was bad, only a couple dollars at most.
And yes, Waiting was a side-splitter. Maybe that's why I don't venture into restaurants anymore? ~
well this is because of "state capitalism" and the fact that our economy is booming and the corporate exec. are raking it in and not passing it down to the little manQuote:

i know not too long ago i went to a steak n shake (the best place ever) at 6am and i was the only one there...
after my meal my total was like 19.xx and i gave her 2 20 dollar bills (one for the meal, and told her to split the 2nd and keep half) she looked at me weird and said "you know that over 50% of your meal" and i was like who gives a fuck, you gave me great service, talked to me, showed me she cared more then to just keep my coffee filled....
anyways she thought i was crazy and drunk (i was completly sober) but she was happy and i was full and happy..... she made the extra effort so i did the same

Why should I have to tip anything at all? What, because you're on your feet all day? Your job is a lot of hard work? Cry me a river. My job is hard too. I'm on my feet all day too. Give me a tip, bitch.
If you are an office worker sitting on your fat ass all day getting overpaid, then maybe you should feel obligated to tip. But I don't sit on my ass all day.
Just keep my glass full and you get 20% from me. However, I do get confused about how much I should tipping hairdresser, nail tech and coffee shops attendents..
