Myth from an old stoner, or the truth?

Ok, so my uncle, who I have the most respect for in the world, is a very heavy smoker, probably goes through 1/8 a day or more, and is almost always an "intellectual" high. He talks about philosophy and religion a lot, and I've probably seen him totally sober about 5 times my entire life. His weapon of choice is a little brass pipe w/ a screw-on top to cover the bowl for transport. He's a very efficient smoker, and never lets extra weed burn after his hits. Here's my question: he swears by the pipe and I've seen him smoke out of his glass pipe, and out of a vaporizer before, and sure enough he is the typical lethargic and stupid high with those two alternative methods... so is it really the pipe that makes it different? I mean I could try to b.s. some justification by saying the air intake is controlled differently with a pipe, but I'd like some more experienced people to verify/reject this idea. I'm thinking about buying my first piece since I'm moving out of the hellhole known as a dormitory and into an apartment soon. I'm thinking about a pipe, but my uncle could be totally full of it. Advice, suggestions? A little more info would be great, as I'm looking for the best ways to conserve weed without having some ghetto setup(don't get me wrong, grav bongs and sprite bottle bongs are great, but not too classy or permanent for that matter). Thanks!

I'm no expert on 'tools' - I'm a newly-converted joint smoker who has recently discovered the wonders of the water-pipe and bong.

But I have noticed that my highs are 'better' when the weed gets filtered through water; better meaning I seem more alert and, at times, more philisophical (sp). When I smoke a joint - I just get goofed and f**k around until I pass out.

So IMHO I don't think a pipe will make much difference but if the weed gets filtered it might give you a 'cleaner' high.

Yer uncle has it right,for personal use,it is a good idea to be able to take a toke,then let it go out until he's ready for another. I've been toking since '72,so I reckon that you could call me an old stoner..lol..however,I know plenty of others that are older than me,and most are conservative in their use..one of em,even mixes tobacco in with his smoke..which I don't like,but it does make it go further.

Us old stoners,do know a few tricks that y'all younguns ain't learned yet:)

I think that you should git a similar pipe to his,unless you only toke with other folks. Another tip--git a bowl with a lid on it and put it on a bong,a bong will increase yer high even further than a pipe will. Just don't spill the bong water :thumbsup:

I love my little metal pipe! it's about the size of my middle finger and comes apart in 5 pieces so I can get a ton of resin out of it. It has a top so I can pack a bowl and put it in my pocket then I smoke when I get a chance. Also with the top you can hit it once and put it back in your pocket in like 10 sec's. These are thing's ive found in my 12 year's of smokin...peace:smokin:

Thanks for the prompt replies. I'm going to go ahead and buy a pipe for now, and wait until my roommates move in to think about something stationary like a bong, and I'll most likely get them to throw in on getting something like that after I see what kinda traffic we'll have coming through. Can't be too careful around college kids(I'm the exception), because they'll rat on you at the first sign of cops. A pipe can be put in my pocket if unknown company comes around, and now that I know it conserves weed really well, I'm thinking that's what I'm going with, since I'll not be providing MJ for everyone that comes through ^^

Get a volcano vaporizer and ROOR bong. You will be in heaven.
Pipes suck...way too harsh..and doesn't get you as high as the above two. All it takes is 550 for the Volcano and 300 for the ROOR. Good luck mate!

THC Transfer Rate

The MAPS-NORML study provides new information on the efficiency of different devices in delivering THC from marijuana to the user. Previous studies have shown that 60% - 80% of the THC burned in joints or waterpipes is lost in slipstream smoke, adhesion to the pipestem and bowl, pyrolysis, etc. [Mario Perez-Reyes, Marijuana Smoking: Factors that Influence the Bioavailability of Tetrahydrocannabinol, in C. Nora Chiang and Richard Hawks, ed., Research Findings on Smoking of Abused Substances, NIDA Research Monograph 99, 1990]. The percentage of total THC delivered to the user is called the THC transfer rate. The unfiltered joint scored surprisingly well in smoking efficiency, coming in second place with a transfer rate close to 20%. The portable waterpipe did slightly better, and the bong slightly worse. The other devices did notably worse. The vaporizers and electric waterpipe did especially poorly, with transfer rates less than one-third that of the top three devices. Thus, heavy smokers could literally be blowing most of their stash away with bad pipes.

i was on there site and read this.... only thing is on the joint conclushion there device has a constant intake ( not takeing into conserderation most people breath and pause while smokeing) inbetween hits thus waisted weed =/ :smokin: From what i got there saying a small water pipe was best? makes sence bubblers own :smokin: there stuidy also useed the volcano:smokin:

atualy, to tell u the truth, ive seen it all over the cannabis boards, bongs atualy dont filter anything out, infact they put more shit into the smoke... i dont know how it happens, it could just be the fact that when they did the tests, they were smoking the resin out of the stem along with the bud.

Look at the bong water after smoking alot of weed. It's filtering out something. I imagine the difference in the high is mostly a function of setting, a bong will likely be smoked at home, sitting around talking. Not surprizing this would be a different high than smoking a joint at a party, or while driving around.

what the fuck party guy?? bongs help filterout the tar and carcinogenics from the smoke and aint gona add anything unless you're using raw sewage.... back to the original matter...the unlce in question will probably get his interlectual high from the amount he smokes (ripping occassionaly on the lidded pipe) if you only smoke a bit its completely different than if you smoke till you you you're stoned cause then you've got everything you smoked still hitting you......bongs are fucking great tho....just get a piece then make a new bong when the one you've got starts to go off...

well...i've never felt the urge to drink water which was once clear, and is now black...

there is no thc in the water used to filter a bong: in that water is everything you dont want to be consuming
i had a friend once who swore pouring bong water over his crop helped them grow, when in fact there's nothing worse you could do. once he stopped this sick practice, i aggreed to pay for his herb.

if you wanna try it, i suggest a sink and some seriously strong mints are close by: with a joint sparked and ready...all will be needed.

partyguy is right.

Smoke is just very fine particulate. As the smoke passes through the water, some of it goes into solution with the water.

New here is the interesting part: Although THC is not very water soluble, neither is oil and resin and other smoke combustion byproducts. In fact, these are less soluble than THC. When you pass the smoke through the water, you lose more THC than you do contaminants, and so end up with a worse THC to contaminant ratio than by simply inhaling the smoke directly.

The result is that to consume an identical amount of THC, you have to inhale a LARGER amount of contaminant.

Don't be fooled.. bongs dont make smoke better for you, they just make it cooler and easier to handle.

As for the metal pipe creating a different high than a glass one or other devices.. id assume it is purely speculative. Human beings have an inbuilt part of thier thought process that allows them to physically experience things because they believe them, not because they are real. This is the basis of the placebo effect, and many tipes of psychosis.

What im saying is that the old guy probably just believes the metal pipe gives him a better high, and since he genuinely believes it, for him, it does.

ok duckFOOL figure this one.......i'll getmore stoned off a bong than pipe even if i'm not expecting it (i'm talking pipe on own to bong on own same sized piece) that is to say that i'm in no way thinking when im taking a rip 'wow im gona get fucked'...secondly the water in a bong smells bad pretty quickly and starts to turn yellow.....thc has neither of these properties...
so you stick that in your pipe and smoke it and i'll use my bong.

I think your missing the point here. Im talking about the cleanliness of the smoke your inhaling, i didn't mention anything about how high you get, ever.

you get higher when you use the bong because it cools the smoke and allows you to inhale a larger amount. Infact, to quote myself: "Don't be fooled.. bongs dont make smoke better for you, they just make it cooler and easier to handle." (With the emphasis on the last part). With a large chamber you can slowly draw the smoke making it more dense and then inhale it quickly. Everyone knows this and i dont really see your point. Perhaps you should reread everything posted.

If your talking about my second post, i'm taking a guess at why the man thinks the pipe works better. My point here is that normally this would NOT be the case and perhaps it is in his head. Reread reread reread.. why dont you "stick that in your pipe and smoke it".

if they dont filter anything out can you explain to me why the water tastes and smells so much different than it did before the smoking?

and as for losing thc, i dont know about that but i do know that smoking through water gets me highs as fuck, probably higher than anything else, so i dont really care about the precise amount of thc the water takes, but i dont think its a lot

Over my years of smoking I have my own philosophies about the essential stoners tools.


Bowls--Harsher than most other devices yet can deliver a good when made out of glass, metal and plastic sucks.

Bongs--I seem to get some really good sleep high's from bongs. Gravity bongs are good but can sometimes overwhelm. Bongs are good for getting those high's late at night.

Joints/Blunts--The traditional tools of a stoner. I seem to get my best hits from these when rolled right, and in turn my best "stoned" highs

Vaporizers--For me, the best daytime high available. When I smoke out of these things I get a good body high that has reduced rates of red eye. Good also because it is easier to taste the bud.

Apple and Orange Bowls--I believe these deserve their own category because the method of smoking and the experience is different form other bowls. Fruit bowls leave a good after taste but have the potential to absorb the most smoke out of any device. Good when you have nothing else but can get old fast and use only on special occasions. They can also be eaten later for when the munchies kick in.

**Note, all these observations are my own personal opinions. Yours may vary and whatever works for you then continue to do so.

You can't deny that the bong water filters SOMETHING. But whether it filters all the crap out is another question.

I just find that when I smoke filtered THC, my highs are 'cleaner'. Pipe is just way too harsh (although I do have a home-made pipe that'll put hair on your ass). I've learned from experience that bongs and waterpipes are easier on the lungs than pipes or joints.

hello all im very new. ive been smokn for 3 years but went and lived in downtown SF just to fully maximize my green education to full potential. Quick question does anyone know what snapping bowls mean. B/c hands on that burns more brain cells thus u get higher besides the volcano. To fully enjoy and make good use out of the water pipe snapping bowls is the only way to go. Maybe its the inhaling of the butane lighter but after snapping a bowl from a solar hit, i can safetly say water pipes delivers a sure head shot.

o yea water pipes do filter.. you know thats why the water stinks? try holding the water up against a blacklight..

weed is just plain better when being filtered - even in a joint the smoke is filtered through the joint itself - hence the potency of roaches. In a pipe its just direct injection and although it gets me goofed pretty quickly its just too harsh for me - maybe if theres a pipe with some sort of filter in it? But by the time you get that right you might as well buy a bong anyway.
