Just a few questions from a new grower...

I am currently doing a closet grow with two plants, about 3 weeks in. Regretably, I dont have the skrilla for a camera, but the plants are fine. I just have a couple general questions regarding my setup, nutes, etc....

(1) I got bloodmeal to mix into my soil when I transplant right before flowering, but how can I use it before hand as a fertilizer? Tea? If so how? And I bought Miracle Grow Bloom Booster (10-52-10). How should I use this, and should I even use this?

(2) As to lights, I am currently vegging with a 65K 85w CFL bulb, and plan on adding 160w of 30K fluorescent tubes vertically when flowering begins. Is this adequate, and what kinda yield will it give me (assuming I get only 1 female)?

(3) I am growing sensi-skunk from sensiseed bank. I have searched like every forum (here, yahooka, icmag, etc. etc.), and it seems like no one grows this strain? Does anyone know of anything I should do/watch for in this particular strain?

(4) A big problem is gonna surface in like 1 1/2 weeks when I go home for Spring Break (in Law School, NEED to go home where I can smoke jah herb for the first time in like 2 months). This puts my plant at five weeks when I leave (and its for 11 days). Am I correctly assuming that I should flower afterwards to make sure I get the males out, and, secondly, how should I water my sexy ladies (knock on wood)? (the obvious problem is that all my "friends" are in law school, and giant douches, leaving my babies with no help)

(5) I want to LST, but is it worth it with only floros (Ive seen what Bobbong did), or should I just get thru my first grow trying to simply not kill them, and go at it as simply as possible?

I don't have much experience with Bloodmeal, but I would assume it would have been better to start them off in it, although I could be wrong. Another thing I would be careful of is when you transplant. You should transplant and then wait at least a week before triggering. This gives the roots time to establish themselves. Some people say this doesn't matter but I learned through experience that it does, at least with the strains that I have grown. Many people don't like Miracle Grow, but I have found it to be okay for budding. Veg is a different story. I prefer PH ballanced nutes that contain all your micro nutrients also. For bud though it should be fine.

I am not a flourecent lover, but some people do okay with them. I would definitely add the extra lighting as soon as possible. I think you would do much better with a 250 watt HPS. The prices are good, but I understand when in school money is tight. Add the extra lights and you should be fine. Just don't veg too long as the light will not reach the bottoms and the size will just add extra time. If you only get one female you should be able to pull off an OZ. With a 250 watt you would most likely get double that. Okay, I know, I will stop pushing the HPS. I just know it would make you much happier, but enoughs enough.

(3) I am growing sensi-skunk from sensiseed bank. I have searched like every forum (here, yahooka, icmag, etc. etc.), and it seems like no one grows this strain? Does anyone know of anything I should do/watch for in this particular strain?

Sensi Skunk is a very forgiving plant. You will likely do very good with this strain as any skunk strain can take abuse (not to say you will abuse it). The only thing that might cause a problem is they can get quite tall, so you should clip the top shoots at about the second or third node. This will keep them short and bushy to an extent. Yeild is usually very good.

I'm not experienced in most areas of interest, so I won't comment.

However, I was faced with the same problem you mentioned in (4). Two months ago I was going home for winter break (30 days) so I bought an Oasis watering system. It cost me $90, but it made my grow possible. Something like this might help you out.

You also might be able to find something like this at a local gardening or hydroponics store. Good luck with everything.

I am much much less experienced than all of you, but I had a bad time w/ blood meal. It was my first grow and I think I killed them with it, If you check out my thread "what's the deal w/ blood meal?'' I got some pretty decent advice. I know that you should make a tea, using pantyhose, but I can't remember all the details right now, so check it out! AND GOOD LUCK. btw I don't hate lawyers, have fun on Spring Break

Alright, got back home yesterday and my plants survived, and even grew a lot. Now I have noticed another problem, that is there is very little secondary growth on one of plants. I have started it on 12/12 for one cycle now, and I cant really veg any longer. Is this lack of secondary growth going to really harm my yield (when I find out its female)?
Also, nobody has commented, but my light system involves one 80w CFL (6500K) above the plants ,and 4 40W (3000K) bulbs hanging vertically. These are both at most 4 inches from the plants. Is this good? Bad?
Lastly, I have noticed that bottom leaves have begun to yellow and crisp up, starting at the cotyledons and working up nodes. Other than that the plants look healthy, and one is especially sexy (FEMALE PLEASE!!! knock on wood).

PS...Thanks for all the help...I know I havent asked a lot of questions...but I gotta shout out to a lot of new growers and others that have threads that were real helpful (justaseed, bukdatass, puff, knowm, etc etc). I know you dont know me, but you have helped me beyond belief.

WOW. My power went out the other day for about an hour. It was on the second day of flowering. The day after I notice both my plants had preflowers (one alot more than the other). On the one plant they all look the same, kinda like an elongated pod. I wish I had a camera. God damnit. Anyway, i was wondering if that dark period would stress them to hermis, or if that small period was inconsequential? Also, I noticed that my plants' leaves are geting real crystally/resiny (even the fan leaves), is this any sign of male/female?
I am stressin hard about these plants, does anyone know how long it takes for the hairs to pop out of the calyx, matter of days/weeks? I thought law school was stressful, try waiting to find out if ur babies are female. Damn, I can feel the ulcer forming...

hey man im thinking of being a lawer but im not shure how hard r the tests and crap and how hars the bar exam

I am only a first year. The test (LSAT) is no joke, I studied my ass off (even tried to stop smoking weed, which did not hold) and still didnt do as well as i thought i would. The only advice I have is make sure it is worth it to you and it is what you want to do, totally and completely. Not only am i spending about 20 Gs a year of someone elses money which I will have to pay back (some people pay almost 1500 a month in loan payments after school), but my life right now is horrible. I am at class/library for about 8 hrs a day and study at home for at least 3-6 after that. Its cool cause its what ive wanted to do for all my life, but if you are gonna go thru all the shit make sure you got good enough grades in undergrad (3.2+) and good LSAT (158+) (or at least had a previous career). Any law school that you go to that accepts under that, you are gonna have a real hard time finding a job right away after the bar exam. Oh, and being a pothead in law school is way tougher. I used to smoke at least 3-4 times a day, now i smoke like 2x a month. And the bar exam is hard, but most pass (75%+).

Damn, sorry, that was pretty long. Just make sure that you wanna spend about 100,000 dollars on it. If its what you wanna do, then do it. Oh, the kids that you go to law school with are of two types: sorostitutes and frat guys, with an occasional nerd/overachiever thrown in. If all this doesnt scare you enough to not want to go, then take the test, its only 120 bucks, see how you do, apply.

Reading that, I have said too much. Take that for what its worth.

Oh and dont worry everyone, there is going to be one more lawyer donating time to legalization in about 2 years. Like they say, the best way to change the system is to become part of it.

Yes, that helps. I also want to point out that all of the "disclaimers" that everyone puts up do nothing legally to protect you. Not that it matters, as almost everything said in these forums is harmless. What really gets you in trouble is advocating methods of getting seeds. That will get you in trouble (see overgrow).

ITS A GIRL!!! Hairs spotted on the second to last internode!! At least one girl out 2 aint bad. Man that was nervewracking. I just might have to break out one of my cubans now....

The other one has hairs too. 2 outta 2 aint bad. I think I am getting really really lucky for a first grow. Especially since i started with a halogen and was only able to sprout 2 outta 4 seeds germinated. I owe it all to you guys/gals. BUGS BUGS EVERYWHERE!!! Despite some string wind/air movement in my grow area, I have noticed some flying bugs that look like gnats. There are also little tiny versions of them crawling all over the floor of the grow room. I have also noticed some little blobs being attached to my girls. What are they? Are these things harmful? How should I get rid of them (will simple fly paper work??)? I have such good flower development and a lot of budsites, I do not want to lose these babies. HELP!!

I just looked again and they seem to be chillin on the soil too, and maybe even in the soil. WTF!? If these little fuckers ruin my crop, I will be ever so fuckin pissed.

Neem oil bro. It causes infertility and should run those buggers out of town.

Another option is suffocating them with elevated CO2. But people seem to think neem oil works best.

Thanks for the quick response. I was overreacting and failed to do a "search" before I posted. Just got some fly traps and ordered some neem oil. Fungus gnats, what a bitch. I have read conflicting reports about the possible damage. If I am unable to control them sufficiently, is there something horrible gonna happen to my plants? I know they eat root tips, but can anything happen to my plant itself (i.e. buds, fan leaves, stems?). I really dont want any fucking larvae or growths on my girlies' buds. Anyway, Im gonna "bring more beef than a trucker to fuddrucker" to these fucking gnats. THIS MEANS WAR!!!!!!

If the neem oil doesnt work (which it will) theres something else you can try.
Get some tobacco, a clove of garlic and a jalapeno pepper. Cut it all up into small squares, and soak in some water for 24 hours. Then strain all the crap from it, and spray the solution on your plants. It wont harm the plants, but the bugs hate it.
Also, talking of sigs/disclaimers, what do you think of mine?

Swizzy, that is a great disclaimer. Thanks for the help with the bug problem, but they have disappeared without the use of neem. I have no idea what i did, but I am glad I did. I am having a new problem, now. One of my plants looks horrible. It is still producing flowers and pistils like crazy, but the fan leaves are dying like crazy. It looked kinda like nute burn, but it cant be because I have fed her nutes once, and I flushed when it started, but it is still getting worse. I am figuring it to be a nute lockout now, but I have no way to check or fix the problem. I cannot afford a tester, and have no way to get lime. I was hoping someone out there knew of some sort of home remedy to fix highly acidic soil. Please, let me know ASAP if there is some kinda common, cheap way to fix nute lockout. It really makes no sense, as my other plant has been fed on the same schedule as the other. Fuck, I love growing, but it sucks the first time, so much to learn in such a short time.

I don't know what those tiny black flies are either, but they came to me from a buddy's grow room and now they're all over. I tossed in ladybugs, flypaper, spiders -- everything but a cat on fire -- and I can't get totally rid of them. Even sterilizing the room between crops didn't completely eradicate them. The good news is that they make the spiders and ladybugs happy, and they don't really seem to bother the plants until they get stuck in the resins and go "pop" when I smoke them. I'll try the pepper mix, maybe. Anyone know what that does to the taste of the smoke?
