Finn'SCRog - Trainwreck & Mystery Sativa
Veg Day 1
Hello and welcome to my third grow :)
It's been a while since my last grow. Spent 5 months in Amsterdam doing an internship and had no chance to grow :( But at least there was plenty of overpriced, but still good, bud to be had. Back to the topic; I'm back in frigid Finland and starting my new grow project
Equipment:
Seeds: Feminized Trainwreck from Greenhouse Seeds Co. Flowering time is 8-9 weeks. Also picked up about a hundred 'Mystery Sativa (MS)' seeds from a local grower. Flowering times are 10-12 weeks for these seeds. Real lineage is unknown, except that they are from a hermie, but I was told that 1 out of 3 was a 'good' plant and wouldn't hermie, so I'm taking my chances. More on that later...
Soil: Testing out a couple different local soils: Rainbow Flower Soil and Biolan Musta Multa. These soils are pre-fertilized, so I won't be using my nutes very much. I'll mix in about a quarter to one third of potting gravel (Closest thing to perlite I can find here, it's very light and airy). For the seedlings I'm using Kekkila Cactus and Seedling soil plus vermiculite.
Nutes: Canna Terra Vega 3-1-4 (for veg if needed) , Canna Terra Flores 2-2-4, Plagron, Green Sensation Top Activator 0-9-10 (Flores for flowering weeks 1-6/7, the top activator for weeks 2-6/7 of flowering as needed)
Light: 400 Watt HPS (getting a new bulb soon, probably Philips Son-T-Plus 55,000 Lumens) with Cooltube 12cm x 39cm long
Ventilation: 1 RUCK Tube fan RK100, 220m³ per hour, (129cfm), 10cm & 12cm ducts. Also a huge (for this setup) 15" axial fan that I'll try to squeeze in somewhere in the closet to move fresh air around.
Odor Control: Active Carbon Filter, 250 m³ per hour. 50cm long with 12cm connections, approx. 2,3 kg active carbon filling
Closet & Cabinet: Now a new cabinet: 97cm x 57cm x 174cm tall (38in. x 22.5in. x 68.5in.) for veg and flowering. I kept my old closet: 57cm x 57cm x 172cm tall (22.5in x 22.5in. x 67.5in.) to be used as a 'dark room' for the MS's, as they will be flowering sooner than the TW's (also temporary veg room)
Vegetation: 18/6 light cycle
Up until today:
Germinated the last two Trainwreck (TW) seeds I had on Monday Jan. 18. Then decided the next day to sprout three of the Mystery Sativas (MS) hoping to get at least one that wouldn't hermie.
One of the TW's, TW2, emerged from the soil on Jan. 21 and is doing great. MS2 and MS3 are just poking out of the soil today, Jan. 23. I can see TW1 just beneath the soil surface trying to come up. MS1 is nowhere to be seen, but I did germinate it in a cup of water (BTW - not recommended but I didn't know how old these seeds were...) so it should pop through in a couple days.
The Plans:
The TW's will be veged for about 4-5 weeks. I'll LST first and then start the Scrog just before flipping the lights. Each TW will have their own screen cut into a triangular shape (makes it easier to move around and flush). Might also take some clones before flowering.
I'm expecting for MS's to hermie, so I'll only veg them for a week or two before putting them in the dark room for 12 hours every night to initiate flowering. If I find a good MS, I'll grow it out, harvest and re-veg to take clones from. I don't think I'll be putting these under a screen, don't really want to waste my time if they are going to hermie. But some LST will definitely be done.
I'm expecting now that 2 of the MS's will hermie and be killed off, so I'll also try to take a couple clones from the better TW. I really want to keep my plant count down to 5 total (including clones) but we'll see how it goes.
I'll be updating about once a week, more if there's anything else going on. Hope you enjoy the show!
Pic 1: New cabinet. Still need some duct, fresh active carbon and a new HPS before I put it together.
Pic 2: TW2 under a 20w CFL
Pic 3: TW1, MS1, MS2 and MS3
Pic 4: MS2 poking out with seed hull still attached

Nice to have you aboard Buffalo and Redtails
Little update: MS2 was looking really shitty with the seed hull attached. The poor thing was just laying on the soil, so I decided to do something about it. With surgical precision, I took 2 sewing needles and carefully managed to pry it open. Let me tell ya, it was shut pretty good. One half is still attached so I just put it back with the others and hoping it will open up normally now. I also sprayed a little water to soften up the shell before its operation. Not too worried about it ATM, still have plenty of those seeds, and they were free. Now I'm just really counting on the second TW to surface... fingers crossed.

No sign of the other TW or 2 MS's, so I'm germinating a couple more of the MS's just in case. Not having another TW would be a big disappointment, but I'll take what I can get at this point :( I'll still be scrogin the 1 TW, just might have to veg it a little longer so I can get some more out of it.
Thanks for stoppin by

Just a quick update:
Finally got the new closet put together, temps are a little high, between 28-30C, but I'm not too worried about it. I bought a new 400w Philips Son-T-Plus HPS bulb and fresh active carbon, but I won't be installing them until the plants get a little bigger. For now I'm going without a carbon filter and using my old 400w which has been through 2 full grows.
TW1 and MS2 are doing great. They've been under their own 20w CFL's for the week and just now put them into the new closet.
TW2 didn't make it, also had some bad luck (or just poor gardening on my part) with some of the other MS seedlings.
Started 4 more MS and they all surfaced a couple days ago. Now they're in the corner of the new grow room.
Couple pics for ya, another update next week

haha yup the fan looks ridiculous, I know :rastasmoke: haven't found a smaller one for cheap enough yet (I have to be stingy cuz uh da wifey :D). I think it'll do just fine to move the air around in there, plenty of empty space at the top.
Crazy? You? Naaahhhh

Welcome back to the Log Forum, Finn. Looks like a first class set up from the start. I'm due for a new 400 W HPS and was thinking EYE Hortilux. Why did you decide on that Philips Son-T ?
Good luck!

Thanks Shov, good to be back.
Honestly I didn't research much about the bulbs, I had to buy what I could get at the local grow shop, and this was the cheapest, 39 â?¬, rip off!
Anyways I can't really order anything from the internet anymore, because the Finnish Gestapo have a habit of getting search warrants for these kinds of orders. All international letter and package mail goes through central customs in Helsinki, and if any cannabis related grow materials are found, they alert the local police. They wait for you to get setup with the grow, and then come bust you.
One grow shop in Helsinki got raided for "facilitating drug cultivation", owners were arrested, customer records seized, and search warrants for those customers were issued. What a fucking country!
:angry3:
Sorry for the rant, wish I had a smarter answer for ya Shov. Keep up the good work

Shit the bed. That's brutal, Finn. :(

Finn'SCRog - Trainwreck & Mystery Sativa
Been over two weeks since the TW and MS1 emerged. They got some new containers this week mixed with 2 parts potting gravel, 2 parts seedling soil and one part Rainbow flower soil.
The other four MS seedlings are now just over a week old and looking very good as well.
The 'fan-o-plenty' :D has been replaced by a smaller, noisier :wtf: fan (5â?¬, what should I expect?), but at least this one could be positioned to blow over the tops and strengthen up the stems a little.
Front and center is the lone TW.

what up finn. i went through your grow sites. pretty neat. I curious to know what happened to the third grow. I have 16 girls in 3 gal pots under 1 400w hps,1 600 w hps. I like the 600w very much. I'am 27 days into veg, doing the lst method. I use tie wire instead of thread, its got to be easer, but still a bitch. Anyhow , i wanted to know what happened and ill try to post some pictures today

You're in it! This is actually my third grow... had to take a long break from growing since the 'Two Trainwrecks' log because of vacation, moving to Amsterdam, vacation, and finally moving to a new place.
Tie wire sounds easier, as long as it has a smooth coating and doesn't scrape and tear the stems.
600w should be good stuff, wish I had one... but actually for me, the 400w produces enough. I'm already paranoid about the noise in my apartment from my tiny little inline fan, and cooling a 600w with my space would take a huge investment, and the wifey no likey that ;)

yea , got the wire at a grow shop, so its purpose made. I'am going lst for the yeild. First time lsting, so a few questions please. Did you keep tiying in the flower stage and what did you yeild per plant roughly? This is my third grow,so maybe we can exchange tips. Right now all i have is , dont go cheep on the soil or nutes and stay away from mirical grow products.I was running 2 different 400w setups, now i have 1 400 ,1 600w hps.. I can tell how much thicker and bushier the 600 is. Not much different on heat, that my become an issue later in the year. no difference on the utilities, amazimg that is.I use earthe juice products. They seem to do the job. peace out.

Kinda difficult to estimate the yield, I think it was about 50-60 grams dried for my 1 plant with only LST. When I did the Scrog, the final yield was weighed at 55 grams dry per plant (probably closer to 60 as I smoked some of them before the harvests and cure).
From looking at other pictures of TW on the internet, I'd say my LST yielded more than just letting it grow normally. Plus TW is not the highest yielding strain, it's actually pretty poor in yield, but excellent in quality...
With my first grow I didn't do much LST into flowering except to spread out the main colas a little to open up the middle, but no serious bending. In Scrog, however, I did train the plants into the screen for 2-3 weeks into flowering while they were stretching.
You should start up a grow log, I'll definitely come check it out

Looks great! Wanted to ask you (as i live in Finland too and want to grow my first lowryder2 plant) what if I just order all the stuff (beside seeds) from internet and do not plant, will i get something if they find all the equipment? Or should i just bring stuff from Holland on holiday trip?
Sorry for a hijack, i was reading your first grow log before this :)

Hey dude no problem
My friend ordered all his grow equipment from Germany, and his seeds from Greenhouse Seeds in the Netherlands, but never put anything together. Two months later the cops showed up at his door with a dog and search warrant (he believes it because of the greenhouse seeds), but no charges were brought up and they didn't take anything either.
However, as I understand the law, even the intent to grow is against the law, so that can be understood in different ways.

My suggestion would be to order everything to a trustworthy friend's house, who can say he sold it all to some unknown person who paid cash. This trustworthy person, however, should not have anything illegal in their home, because the police will most likely come knocking one day.
Or, grow some chilli with your setup, wait for the cops, and when they do come, file a complaint like everyone else: Police Raids of Home Gardens Spark Controversy | News | YLE Uutiset | yle.fi :D

It's my wife's old pantyhose that I cut to size for my passive intake :D Acts as a filter for dust and helps to light proof.

Kiitos!!, that helped a lot actually. Still leaves me wonder, if all those companies use stealth delivery and boxes are not opened - how customs know whats inside. This year i got seeds from UPS courier straight to the door(over 800â?¬ box for friends that grow in Russia), sealed box and all.... he left me two lowryder 2 seeds to try...i guess ill wait for cops to arrive first :hippy:

I believe they X-ray or somehow scan everything :abduct: With stealth packaging you might be OK, but at least greenhouse seeds don't stealth package, they brand package and send a nice big seed catalog. My friend thinks this is the reason they came to his house.
I think it also depends a little on which city or town you are in... the customs may report it, but sometimes the police have better things to do than run around trying to bust growers... sometimes :wtf:

Thanks Gare
I'm still learning, but try to help others where I can.
Unfortunately I'm in an uphill battle right now. They have all been growing very slowly IMO. Reasons for this:
1. I've had the old hps on them (this light has been used for almost 3000 hours)
2. Low humidity
3. Not enough nutrients
4. Possibly the soil sucks, it's the cheaper stuff. Next repot I'll probably just use the more expensive one if problems persist.
Yesterday I decided to change the 400w hps bulb, and transplanted the younger ones into 1 liter containers.
Been misting them with water.
Plants are yellowing due to what I believe is a Nitrogen deficiency. TW and MS1 (the 2 older plants) are already recovering from this, but now the 4 younger MS's are having the same problem. I have given them all a 1/3 dose of the Canna Veg nutes plus about 1/3 dose of seaweed extract. Hopefully the younger ones recover in the next couple days like the older ones did.
This is one of the drawbacks of growing in soil. You never know what exactly you're getting with soil, and it's difficult to fix problems with nutrients. I think I'll try coco next time.
Plans are also changing. I will probably have a visitor coming to my home in May, which means I need to be over and done with the grow by then. This means no cloning :(, no re-veg  , and the MS's will have to start flowering next week . I'll let the TW veg for about another month.
-
Finn'SCRog - Trainwreck & Mystery Sativa
22 days from breaking the soil for the TW and MS1. The other 4 MS are about a week younger.
Like I said in the previous post, they are starving for Nitrogen and are slowly getting better. The MS1 is looking the best, and the TW is not far behind. The other 4 MS's are slowly recovering. I increased the distance to the light to help in the recovery.
Also put in the carbon filter when I changed to the new 400w HPS light.
I'm having to guess at this point when my guest will arrive, sometime in the end of May, so I'm planning to flower all 5 MS's starting Feb 24, (11 more days of veg) to give them 12 weeks of flowering time if needed. The TW can wait until March 17 to flower, so if all goes well, it should be a pretty good sized scrog for the TW.
Here are some pics. In the first pic, front right is the TW, front left is the MS1. The other 4 in the taller containers are the other MS's.
MS1 is looking to be quite sativa dominant next to the TW. The other 4 MS's are showing some variations.

what's good finn? can't believe i haven't seen this grow before now. you know i'm along for the ride.
as far as soil, you pretty much get what you pay for. if you get a good soil you know exactly what you are getting. this go round i've been using bioterra from biocanna. it's about $25/1.5 cuft. bag, but it seems to work really well. i know biobizz soil rocks as well. the all-mix is pre-ferted, but it's all organic.
i think you will be very happy with the TW! i've seen first hand what beauts they can turn into. i've also been lucky enough to procure some cuttings from a few of them as well. (see attached pic!)
keep up the great work my friend! inspiring as always!
-shake
this pic is about 2 weeks old too! done with organics.
-
Finn'SCRog - Trainwreck & Mystery Sativa
Very nice Shake
Yeah I wish I could get some decent soil, but the nearest grow shop is over 100km away, and I ain't got no car mang! :D Oh well, I'm trying some different soils, and started with seedling soil this time instead of the regular pre-ferted soil. I don't why I did this, since I haven't had problems so far with young seedlings in pre-ferted soil, but I decided to go by the book this time, and now look where it got me :( My ladies got hungry...
Can't say it's a total loss yet, they're still growing, and I just transplanted the TW and MS into bigger containers as they started to droop, and were quite rootbound. Also gave them 2/3 dose of the Canna Terra Vega plus 2/3 dose of seaweed extract.
Might try some foliar feeding on one of the younger MS's just to see if that helps with the N deficiency. I'm willing to sacrifice one of those for the sake of personal enlightenment.
-
Finn'SCRog - Trainwreck & Mystery Sativa
can't take credit for the TW Finn, it's irydyums! i do however have some cuts from that bad bitch!
i hear ya loud and clear about the soil. you obviously know what you are doing!
foliar feeding should help cure up that N deficiency.
also, be careful with those sativas! they ALL have a tendency to hermie!
keep up the great work! sucks about the car/grow shop conundrum.

You guys trying to jinx me or what :wtf:
j/k :D Not getting my hopes up with the MS, they are all from a hermie(s). Not sure if it was a genetic or stress issue that caused it, but the guy I got the seeds from still grows these out and says sometimes they hermie, and sometimes they don't.
As long as the TW's doing well, I'm happy. But it would be nice to have a sativa on hand. Thanks for stopping by

Thanks LSY :) I'm happy to have the extra space now... using my 400w in the old closet was a bit overkill... If you make the switch one day, you won't regret it. Just need to remember to invest in the right ventilation and you won't have as many headaches ;) I'm sure you've seen FrostedWonder's grow, I'd use that as an example. He's got a much bigger fan with a speed controller. That's what I'll be looking for next.

I haven't been the best caretaker in these first weeks. Seems like I've forgotten everything after not growing for 9+ months. As long as I get 1 or 2 keepers from the Sativas I'll be happy. I'm not expecting problems with the TW although according to GHS they have a 20-30% chance of hermie :wtf:
Nice to have you all here  Happy growing
