Pelosi To Protesters: "Can We Drill Your Brains?"
House Democratic leaders and protesters waving McCain signs had a war of words Tuesday at a press event outside an old train station. The demonstrators interrupted House Speaker Nancy Pelosi with chants of ??Drill here! Drill now!?
Pelosi paused and asked the group, ??Right here??
Seeming to enjoy the back and forth, she followed with another question: ??Can we drill your brains??
She went on to refer to the protestors, who continued to chant sporadically, as ??handmaidens of Big Oil.? Arguing that increased offshore drilling would only reduce gas prices two cents in 10 years, she referred to the demonstrators as the ??two-cents-in-ten-years-crowd.?
Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer swiped at the demonstrators, too, saying that ??sophomoric chanting? won??t solve the energy crisis and that ??all thinking Americans know? ?? stressing the word "thinking" and looking at the crowd ?? that America doesn??t have a quarter of the word??s fossil fuels yet uses a quarter of the world??s energy.

Nice way for her to refer to 70% of the population. I'd say we should all petition to "drill her brain" but why waste the money on a dry hole.
Have a good one!:s4:

A politician with a sense of humor? Oh no!!!
Please... If these protestors are going to be inconsiderate douchebags and continuously interrupt her and disrupt the speech, what right have they to demand respectful consideration in return? We don't need politicians who are mindlessly polite and subservient in the face of blatant disrespect. You fling mud at somebody, expect to get some right back in your face.

Wow, 70% of the population was at a Pelosi event? I had no idea she could draw those kinds of crowds! And why wasn't I invited?
Honestly though, I think these people are stupid. Oil is a dead resource, and even if we drilled all US oil reserves at maximum capacity, it wouldn't make a dent in the world supply or prices. There is definielty plenty of money to be MADE by oil companies by opening up more oil leases, but not much money to be SAVED by oil consumers.
These are people who want to SAVE money who have been bamaboozled by those who want to MAKE money.

You mean like how Pelosi would interrupt or deny any speak in the senate in regards to offshore drilling?
You're right you fling mud in somebody's face and expect to get some right back in yours. Pelosi had this coming. It's just too bad that she won't even listen to her constituency. There's a reason congress's approval rating is around 18-20%. Pelosi is part of that reason.

You know better than that. You know he was talking about 70% of the population that wants to drill. Not 70% of the population was there protesting.
(ps. I know you were just being sarcastic, was funny )

Oil is not a dead resource but it is definitely a depleting resource. To assume that adding an additional 200k barrels a day to the world trade market would do nothing is prepostorous. It is true that American Alone would not put a dent in the price of oil if we were the sole suppliers. Luckily for us the rest of the world is pitching in also. Combined with our efforts and other countries efforts, yes... the price of oil will go down.
I work for an oil company now and have worked for a few others in the past. About those oil leases.. if there was enough oil under the leases, or even accessible oil, to where it was cost effective (meaning they would turn a profit) by drilling there then trust me.. they would've been drilling there already.
A lot of money is invested by oil companies to determine if an area is profitable to drill or not. You can't blame them for not drilling if they feel they won't make money off of it. They are a business, not a public service.

Last I checked the world market determined the price for a barrel of oil.

We're in agreement. Congress has been more useless than I've ever seen in my lifetime; the Democrats got even less accomplished than the Republicans these last couple years, and that's saying something.
Here's how American politics work: The Republicans will say "I've got a terrible idea!", and the Democrats will say "...and here's how we'll make it worse!"

I honestly believe our nation is at a time where politics are at their worst. It is true and I can't deny that neither Republicans or Democrats aren't getting crap done and it's all due to both parties thirst for power.
I love Lewis Black! lol :hippy:

And yet, you'd think the American people would take this as an opportunity to finally vote for a 3rd party candidate (for me, preferrably libertarian), and actually open up the political process! But they haven't; instead I watched the Obama DNC speech a couple nights ago and saw alomst every woman there choking back tears.
Meanwhile McCain thinks the economy is in tip-top shape, that 'ol George got it all right, and amazingly BOTH candidates won't discuss the constitutional liberties stripped away by the Bush administration.
I have a despondant feeling that if a 3rd party can't even increase it's votes in times like these, America will be stuck in the system of the 2-headed dragon forever.

The problem with the 2 party system isn't necessarily the system itself, but rather that they are allowed to balloon to enormous sizes with virtually unlimited funds.
Limit the party size and give each party a budget they must abide by and I guarantee we would see a lot more get done, in addition to this younger parties with new ideas would be able to participate much more easily than before, allowing for their voices to be heard much more clearly than before. Give all parties equal seats and then no one has 'power'. They become representatives instead as our forefathers intended it.
The problem is that this would never happen. It would have to be voted on and we all know that no politicians are going to open up a door that may give opportunity for them to lose their power.. SIGH!!!

That's an interesting idea dailashi; one which makes me think you might be interested in looking into a form of government called "proportional representation". I studied it in political science alongside all the other voting systems, and have to say it was possibly my favorite. Actually I was against it initially, and voted against it when my province had a vote for it; but once I actually learned the full mechanics of all the systems, I realized it worked out a lot better than I thought. It doesn't result in equal representation per-se, but it does ensure that all parties recieve some representation and that a 52% majority cannot suppress the rights of a 48% minority (an example I'm pulling from Nevada pot-laws and their last vote on legalization).

And yet Republicans all over the place are blaming taxes, and the fact that there are restrictions on where oil companies can drill, for the high oil prices.

I've heard it said that it's best when the government is gridlocked like that; that way they can't screw up as much.

You know, if it was say, Hillary Clinton vs. John McCain, I'd almost certainly vote Libertarian. I did in 2004. But I really do believe that Obama represents a divergence from the typical Democrats vs. Republicans way of doing things. Even though Obama is part of the two-party system, he's a realist. I think he has the best chance to actually help fix a lot of what's wrong with our government, without throwing the country into disarray like a Libertarian would.

He worked his way through the Chicago political system....how is he a realist? If anything he's part of the problem that needs to be fixed.
