fight, flight or freeze...
ahh... the age old question that is a strong indicator of personality....
so, what catagorey are you in? (for those unfamiliar, it's about being confronted, either physically, as in a fight, or by other means such as being called on your bullshit [think politician]
it's pretty simple really... you're confronted, generaly speaking do you choose to stick it out and fight, tuck tail and run, or do neither and just freeze with no idea whatsoever exactly on what to do?
(should also be noted fleeing doesn't make you a wimp/pussy/scaredy cat/mark or w/e you wanna call it, just as fighting doesn't mean you're just a savage beast ready to brawl out any problem that arises)
personally, i stick to flee.. i'm not a very violent or physical person... i will also go farther then i should have to, to de-escelate a situation, i prefer to difuse a situation, rather then lay it all on the line in name of honor...
i haven't added a fourth option as there is no need.... everyone has a tendancy in this type of action, so there are only the three choices...
[and yes i'm feeling especially topic-posting inclined tonight :p]

fight, flight or freeze...
Fight for me. I AM a fighter. I've always been arrogant, and wanted to be the best - so i try my hardest. If someone challanges me, i cant walk away. I'm not happy untill i've won. But i always try to stop things getting worse verbally first. I'll never start a fight. The way i see it is if they start it, i've have the right to finish it. Also, if i loose it and end up killing them it was for my own safety, so im more likely to only get charged with manslaughter instead of murder.

fight, flight or freeze...
I'm no hardcore fighter and don't go looking for trouble. Like many others here I'd much rather defuse the situation. However I will stand my ground and not be pushed over. Fights can be pretty exciting, when it escalates and the punches start flying. By a good fight I mean one that is resolved, and no one really gets too hurt. I hate assholes who stamp, jump, punch, kick, or assault people who are down, or pick on people who aren't willing to fight.

Not sure what to vote, I kind of passively stand my ground. I won't run away, but I won't fight unless they attack first.
-
fight, flight or freeze...
k, just to clear things up, here are my definitons (and the ones relevant to this thread)
freeze - pretty obvious... you just freeze up, can't think can't act you just have no idea what to do..
fight - someone wants to take your life, so you defend it by taking his.. a manager accuses you of being the reason supplies are coming up missing so you stick to your guns and never give in, even if it means costing you this job
flight is abit harder, i think it needs to be split into two groups actually...
1. you run from anything, as long as it's conflict you run the opposite way...
2. you will do ANYTHING to avoid the confrontation/problem, but you WILL NOT be made a fool of... you will stand your ground, but only if it's a last resort
-
fight, flight or freeze...
Depends on the circumstances. If someone came at me with a gun, obviously, I'd freeze and do what they said. If they were unarmed but looked way bigger and stronger than me, I'd try and flee. But my gut tells me if I thought I had a shot, I'd fight. Certainly I'd fight to defend myself or my property or my family under the right circumstances.
Once about 10 years ago at Wal-Mart, someone tried a real fast snatch-and-grab of my purse out of the shopping cart on the way out to the parking lot. I was faster. I snatched his wrist and twisted it (I look tall and willowy/flimsy, but I'm actually strong as an ox and know a lot of restraining holds) and he dropped the purse. I tried to hold onto him but he finally got away. I surprised that guy, and although my husband and the police were mad at me for putting myself at risk, it felt like I'd done the right thing. It wasn't like I had time to plan my response anyway; I acted on instinct. I'd do the same thing today. That whole incident was captured on the surveillance cameras, and that guy was snatching purses in stores throughout the area. They finally busted him.

fight, flight or freeze...
i think there are more categories, i take a calcutaion, as to wether i can take them or not. resulting in fighting or flighting. but sometimes both are required.
also situations are different. i will stand my ground when needs be as not all fights are physical i dont avoid confrontation. i just avoid situations where confrontation is pointless and i will get killed.
i guess im a infromed fighter !?!

That's so typical BirdGirl, that the police would be mad at you for defending yourself. More and more authorities are trying to legislate a society of victims, utterly dependant on the mommy-state, defensless unless recieving special legal entitlement to protect yourself (ie. being a cop).
Nuts to the police, you did the right thing!

They really weren't trying to make me a victim. They were simply concerned that that guy might have been armed and could have hurt me badly when I grabbed him to get him to let go of the purse. Had I thought he'd been armed, I wouldn't have done what I did. People who fight back often do get injured while doing so.
Lately not too far south from where we live, there's been a gang of thieves who pull up next to women getting in their cars in the parking lots of nice stores, steal their jewelry and purses, rough them up, and then run. These guys are armed and there are two or three of them. They roughed up one lady, who got away with minor injuries but lost her purse. Then they beat another woman so badly that she's still in intensive care and has a traumatic brain injury that she'll never fully recover from. The ladies didn't fight back. I'm sure they knew they were overpowered. I would have done exactly what the criminals asked in that case. Till they arrest those guys, I'm not shopping in that area, or, if I must, I'm taking my bodyguard (Dave).

I wouldnt purposely kill anyone. Well, i would, but thats a differnt story, and it's all about circumstance.
I cannot control my temper, i have what i think [birdie found this out] intermittent explosive disorder.
I try not to get into fights anymore, coz if i do, i dont always know when to stop. But if someone starts a phyical fight with me, i will finish it. I always have, and i always will. I've never been beaten up, and i've never lost.

LIP: You know you're insane when you think about things like this. I have similar thoughts, lol. I'd rather wait and let someone punch me first also.
There are certain situation that may cause me to run away. If I'm about to fight against a 7'0" body builder on steroids then yeah, I'll probally run. Most of the time I will stay and fight. I have somewhat of an anger problem, not too bad but I do tend to get carried away in fights. I try to be non-violent though but sometimes that doesn't work.

Thats another thing I have a problem with :wtf: If I'm not 100% sure im right then I don't fight. Sometimes I get in small fights with people and realize that I provoked it pretty much so I back off and leave the person alone instead of hunting them down and kickin the crap out of them.:rasta:
Added: I come off pretty violent I assure you I'm not that bad :D Haven't gotten in any bad fights in a while.

If they make the mistake to piss me off, not only I'd fight them, I'll punish them.

Generally, I diplomatically state my position, and try to keep a level head, but usually, I'd rather just kick the shit out of anybody that pisses me off.
Good thing I have self-control. But if we lived in an anarchy, things might be different.

I usually say "Its a wonderful day for dying!"
I belong to the 4th category that was left out: If I am confronted I will stand my ground, and attempt to solve the situation. I will do my best to avoid physical confrontation, trying to solve things verbally like adults.
If it is apparant that the conflict will not have a peaceful end, I will reassess the situation. If I am with somebody that could get hurt or scared by my getting into a physical confrontation, I will very possibly leave, or maybe just escort them to safety.
Otherwise if I am left with no options, I will allow the person to throw the first punch, at which time I will destroy their body until I am dead or unconscious, ripped off of him by numerous people, or his brains are clearly more outside of his head than inside. Thats usually a good indicator to stop.

Im a fighter.
Too big to run fast.
Freezing stands too big a chance of getting punched in the face.
Ill stand my ground.

Here is a little test that will help you decide.
The answer can be found by posing the following question:
You're walking down a deserted street with your wife and two smallchildren. Suddenly, an Islamic Terrorist with a huge knife comes around thecorner, locks eyes with you, screams obscenities, praises Allah, raises theknife, and charges at you.
You are carrying a Glock 40 caliber, and you are an expert shot. You havemere seconds before he reaches you and your family. What do you do?............................................... ................
Democrat's Answer:
Well, that's not enough information to answer the question!
Does the man look poor or oppressed?
Have I ever done anything to him that would inspire him to attack?
Could we run away?
What does my wife think?
What about the kids?
Could I possibly swing the gun like a club and knock the knife out of hishand? What does the law say about this situation?
Does the Glock have appropriate safety built into it?
Why am I carrying a loaded gun anyway, and what kind of message does thissend to society and to my children?
Is it possible he'd be happy with just killing me?
Does he definitely want to kill me, or would he be content just to woundme?
If I were to grab his knees and hold on, could my family get away while hewas stabbing me?
Should I call 9-1-1?
Why is this street so deserted?
We need to raise taxes, have a paint and weed day, and make this happier, healthier street that would discourage such behavior.
This is all so confusing! I need to debate this with some friends for fewdays and try to come to a consensus.

lol.... Id have my hand on the gun as soon as I saw the towel come around the corner. As soon as I saw the knife, I would have drawn and shot him in the knife-holding arm, then in one or both kneecaps. After securing the body and having my wife take the kids home, I would then abduct and interrogate him, and possibly torture him before I kill him and dispose of his body.
-

I would have personally shot him in the arm straight away and then watch him writhe in pain and bleed. IF he had a gun i'd put two bullets right through his mouth, so that it blows the back of the brain out and stops the message getting to his finger, so i kill him and he cant kill me.

Christ... That sounded like what i would do... Until the torturing part:wtf:
As for me, In pretty much any situation I'll fight, Im not a big dude, but i can hold my own. If it were a situation where, i was being held a gun point i would just comply, unless i was absolutely sure i could get out of the situation somehow.

i thought so too, but depending on perception and situation, you could still be fighting, while not being aggresive....
just say someone pushing a guy around, the guy doesn't fight him, but he isn't running away either... stands his ground and tells the one pushing him to stop, technically, that could be perceived as fighting...

Yeah, right.... and that makes you no better than them.
The expert marksman will already know that you *NEVER* draw your weapon unless there is an immediate threat to life, limb and/or property. Also consider that a Federal Magistrate told me that if I ever have to pop cap on somebody, to empty the clip....keep pulling the trigger until the hammer falls on an empty chamber. *DO NOT RELOAD!!!* as reloading constitutes "pre-meditation" and will put you behind bars for a very long time. After the first magazine, the threat has ended... either the bad guy is dead or he has hauled ass. When asked "Why did you put 14 9mm rounds into the bad guy??", the correct answer is "Your honor, thats all the gun held."
-
fight, flight or freeze...
you know i dont really think there is a freeze response...
you will at the end of the day make the flight or fight decision....
it's just takes some people to realise the situation they are in.
instinctivly i am a flight person.
i like to get out of the awkward situation asap!

Those 72 virgins are on me, and Allah. Courtesy of Glock and a red beam. Ill send you paradise, quick. Im not scared of knives. What man wouldnt take a knife for his wife and kids? Psyco, that is 17 shots. Thats the original magazine capacity of a Glock 19. Good call.
