fight, flight or freeze...
ahh... the age old question that is a strong indicator of personality....
so, what catagorey are you in? (for those unfamiliar, it's about being confronted, either physically, as in a fight, or by other means such as being called on your bullshit [think politician]
it's pretty simple really... you're confronted, generaly speaking do you choose to stick it out and fight, tuck tail and run, or do neither and just freeze with no idea whatsoever exactly on what to do?
(should also be noted fleeing doesn't make you a wimp/pussy/scaredy cat/mark or w/e you wanna call it, just as fighting doesn't mean you're just a savage beast ready to brawl out any problem that arises)
personally, i stick to flee.. i'm not a very violent or physical person... i will also go farther then i should have to, to de-escelate a situation, i prefer to difuse a situation, rather then lay it all on the line in name of honor...
i haven't added a fourth option as there is no need.... everyone has a tendancy in this type of action, so there are only the three choices...
[and yes i'm feeling especially topic-posting inclined tonight

Fight for me. I AM a fighter. I've always been arrogant, and wanted to be the best - so i try my hardest. If someone challanges me, i cant walk away. I'm not happy untill i've won. But i always try to stop things getting worse verbally first. I'll never start a fight. The way i see it is if they start it, i've have the right to finish it. Also, if i loose it and end up killing them it was for my own safety, so im more likely to only get charged with manslaughter instead of murder.

I'm no hardcore fighter and don't go looking for trouble. Like many others here I'd much rather defuse the situation. However I will stand my ground and not be pushed over. Fights can be pretty exciting, when it escalates and the punches start flying. By a good fight I mean one that is resolved, and no one really gets too hurt. I hate assholes who stamp, jump, punch, kick, or assault people who are down, or pick on people who aren't willing to fight.

Not sure what to vote, I kind of passively stand my ground. I won't run away, but I won't fight unless they attack first.

k, just to clear things up, here are my definitons (and the ones relevant to this thread)
freeze - pretty obvious... you just freeze up, can't think can't act you just have no idea what to do..
fight - someone wants to take your life, so you defend it by taking his.. a manager accuses you of being the reason supplies are coming up missing so you stick to your guns and never give in, even if it means costing you this job
flight is abit harder, i think it needs to be split into two groups actually...
1. you run from anything, as long as it's conflict you run the opposite way...
2. you will do ANYTHING to avoid the confrontation/problem, but you WILL NOT be made a fool of... you will stand your ground, but only if it's a last resort

Depends on the circumstances. If someone came at me with a gun, obviously, I'd freeze and do what they said. If they were unarmed but looked way bigger and stronger than me, I'd try and flee. But my gut tells me if I thought I had a shot, I'd fight. Certainly I'd fight to defend myself or my property or my family under the right circumstances.
Once about 10 years ago at Wal-Mart, someone tried a real fast snatch-and-grab of my purse out of the shopping cart on the way out to the parking lot. I was faster. I snatched his wrist and twisted it (I look tall and willowy/flimsy, but I'm actually strong as an ox and know a lot of restraining holds) and he dropped the purse. I tried to hold onto him but he finally got away. I surprised that guy, and although my husband and the police were mad at me for putting myself at risk, it felt like I'd done the right thing. It wasn't like I had time to plan my response anyway; I acted on instinct. I'd do the same thing today. That whole incident was captured on the surveillance cameras, and that guy was snatching purses in stores throughout the area. They finally busted him.\"That best portion of a good man\'s life: his little, nameless, unremembered acts of kindness and love.\"

i think there are more categories, i take a calcutaion, as to wether i can take them or not. resulting in fighting or flighting. but sometimes both are required.
also situations are different. i will stand my ground when needs be as not all fights are physical i dont avoid confrontation. i just avoid situations where confrontation is pointless and i will get killed.
i guess im a infromed fighter !?!

That's so typical BirdGirl, that the police would be mad at you for defending yourself. More and more authorities are trying to legislate a society of victims, utterly dependant on the mommy-state, defensless unless recieving special legal entitlement to protect yourself (ie. being a cop).
Nuts to the police, you did the right thing!
