Raskolnikov Grows The Pot

Been readin' these boards for a few months now. Thanks much for the wealth of knowledge contained herein.

I've grown the odd plant outdoors, but this is my first indoor attempt. Hopefully this log can help others, as well as myself.

I ordered 10 Joey's Mix seeds from Hemp Depot.Marijuana Cannabis seeds at Hemp Depot Shipped Worldwide I have no idea what strain they are. They are supposed to be a random mix from Joey's Weed. $35 plus tax. Cheap, but I'm just experimenting right now.

I sprouted 6 in paper towel within about a week span, and planted them in 3 inch pots with some generic peat based potting mix (no nutes in mix).

They moved around from window sill to outside for a while, until I could hang some lights, where they've been since June 28th. They were 1-2 weeks old. I started with a couple of 4' Gro-Lux wide spectrum flourescents, but I don't think they liked it. They are now under 3 34W cool whites.

Transplanted June 5th, at 2-3 weeks. The roots of the older plants were just starting to crawl along the bottom of the pots. I put them in 8'x 10" (2 gallon) pails with holes drilled in the bottom. I used Pro Mix High Porosity mix, and watered them with Britta filtered tap water, which was allowed to stand over night. I added a few drops of Superthrive per gallon. Each pot took nearly a gallon of water before it started dripping out the bottom. The ph of the water was about 7, and the runoff ph was around 6 (my ph strips aren't very accurate).

Temps have been fairly constant at around 23C (73F) in the room, and 25C (77F) around the plants. Humidity is around 40-50 percent.

They are now 4-5 weeks old, and working on 4 and 5 nodes. Click the pics to enlarge.

I've numbered the plants as they were planted. 1 is the oldest, 6 is the youngest. About a week span between them.

Since I don't know what strains they are, educated guesses are welcome.

This is #1. The tallest and widest. Her and #2 got orange spots on their first true leaves when they were under the Grow-Lux. I figure it's just light burn, since no other leaves have them.

#2 has a kind of bubbly mottled texture to the leaves, even the new ones. It's the bushiest and smelliest of the bunch. In the last pic, you can see three things:

- the mottled texture
- the orange spots on the first true leaves
- and on the far left, there are some white spots. This is on a couple other plants as well. There are very tiny black specks around and on the spots. Mites?

#3 is a nice healthy looking specimen. Except for a few of those white spots/black specks.

#4 has a mutant second node. Half of it didn't grow properly. The white spot is probably housefly shit. I'm usink Konk now, for flies. I saw a couple of what looked like fungus gnats for a day or two, but they're dead now.

#6 is the slowest growing. It took a looong time for it to shed it's seed casing. I had to help it a bit.

The last time they've had water was 8 days ago, when they were transplanted. I want to start giving them nutes (3-1-3), but the medium is still moist, and they don't seem thirsty at all. Should I wait until the soil is drier?

For the size of the pots, when should I start flowering? I don't want to transplant again, and I don't want the plants to get too rootbound. I'll be using lots of 24W warm cfl's because I have about 50 of them (don't ask). I'll be doing some light lst, and space isn't a problem, just the pot size.

Nice plants, I'd much rather know what I'm growing though. Too many different possibilities. But regardless they should be good. Joey has a lot of good strains! Honestly if they don't look like they want food more than likely they are fine. They really don't look like they need any nutrients. Also they look fine, don't see any signs of mites causing probs. You should really get a microscope so you can get a closer look. If you start seeing little tiny holes all over the place though that's a sure sign that you have a prob. If your room is clean, your clothes are clean and your soil is hi-qual sterile soil you should have no probs with mites..hopefully. And depending on the size you want them to be, you might have to transplant them again. And don't worry about flowering for another month or so. Just enjoy them and watch 'em grow for now :D.

I had trouble deciding on a strain, so I figured a variety would let me see which grows best under my conditions, but the seeds weren't individually labeled. I'd prefer to know too.

I have a big ass magnifying glass from my grandmother. She hung it around her neck for reading while gumming bits of whatever was in her mouth. I can't see the black specs with the naked eye. I'll keep an eye out for those holes.

This is why I'm now going to put these straight to flower without bothering to clone. I'll start from scratch with one strain in a sterile environment. Then clone and ScrOG with an HPS.

Honestly they don't look like they're going to need nutrients for some while now. You might wanna wait another 3 weeks before even considering giving them anything. They are more than fine right now. No need to feed em, they just need some nice clean water :).

What you say makes sense, I will heed thy wisdom. Gave them all a drink tonight with filtered aged tap water (couldn't help adding a wee bit of Superthrive). They took about 1.5 liters.

BUT

I am experimenting, soooo... I gave #4 full nutes, just to see what happens. Half it's leaves and side branches are all mutated anyway.

AND

#5 has topped itself. The second node just withered up, and it's now growing 2 nice branches from the first node, each with 2 nodes already.

P.S. How bad is it if a cat licks up some spilled nutrient water, lol....

Geez don't kill your cat and your plants :p. I'm telling you it really wasn't necessary but you'll see the results soon :).

Lord knows the cat certainly doesn't need any more nutrients, damn fat thing. Ah well, it was only a few licks before I stopped her.

Been wondering how many lights I could have for a grow without drawing suspicious amounts of electricity, and I found a cool little equation for determining how many total watts you're drawing. It really gives you a good idea of your power consumption. Not sure if this has been posted before...

First thing you need is the kh number, stamped on the face of the meter. It's probably 7.2, like mine. Then you count how many seconds it takes for the big wheel to spin around once, and plug it into this equation:

Watts = 3660 x kh ÷ seconds

I turned on a bunch of lights and the central AC, and it took 8 seconds to spin around once.

So 3660 x 7.2 ÷ 8 = 3294 Watts

Of course the AC doesn't run all the time, but it's still good to know I can draw over 3000 W under normal circumstances.

Turned off the AC, left the furnace fan running... 1145 Watts
Turned off the furnace fan... 750 Watts. Wow, that fan uses almost 400 Watts
Turned off my monitor... down to 710 Watts.
Turned off the PC... drawing 600 watts total.
I went around and turned off all the lights, radios, etc and got down to 300 Watts. That would be for the grow lights, fan, fridge, and misc. clocks, microwave, answering machine, etc.

Multiply your watt usage by .72 to get the monthly total kWh. A constant draw of 300 Watts is about 215 kWh per month. Average household usage in my area is 900 kWh.

So I could easily have 2 1000 Watt lights alternating 12/12. Even if I used 500 Watts constantly, plus the lights, that would bring my total to just over average.

To double check, I can see my neighbour's meter from my kitchen window. They use between 1500 and 2500 Watts constantly, without the AC on. So me running 2 1000 Watt lights would be no problem at all, if I minimize my usage of all the other little power gobblers.

Wow nice work with doing all those figures lol. I couldn't do that by my self, if there's one thing I suck at, it's math. In the future I think I'm probably only gonna use a total of 750 watts for my grows. I plan on doing having perpetual harvest thing going. Use about 150 watts for my clones and just 600 watts for my mature clones (donors for cuttings) and flowering clones. But I hear just as long as you give the people the money when they want it (your electricity company) you shouldn't have any issues.

Rasko, i'll share a lil advice i saw and was given.

the roots need some breathing of O2 from time to time.
its better to let them go a lil extra dry for a day than to keep them too moist too often for too long.

I experimented with this advice and found that even when i forced myself to wait an extra day to let em get extra dry and breath, they bounced rite back with no worries.
but, the opposite result would be that they get too wet for too long and that can kill em,and im sure that would be more difficult to recover.
another thing i noticed. the difference between watering with or without superthrive. I will say that watering (and foliar spaying) with ST in small doses did far more good than plain water. at one point i decided it was such a positive that i now do add it for every single watering, nutes or not. they love it.

stay away from the watering can for a while, and get a cheapo moisture meter, definately worth it. less than 10clams at hardware joint(HD,lowes,etc)

i thought they needed water (top 1.5 inched were dry) but, the moisture meter told a different stoy at root level. so, i waited. they didnt mind.
I now only water when the meter reads dry down in the lower half of the pot.

thats all i got. im still in my own learning curve. :wtf:

Also when you get used to your the whole process of this method, if you're too cheap to buy a moisture meter (like me lol) you can try the "lifting-the-pots" method which all you simply do is determine how much water is in them from the heaviness of the pots. It works well for me, never over-watered my plants.

True dat about paying your bill. Apparently people get caught when the power company notices "hot spots", where lots of power is being used, but not paid for.

My sister runs a catering business from her house, with loads of freezers and fridges. I checked the other day and they were drawing over 8000 Watts. They've been doing this for several years, and no one's ever asked any questions.

Rock & orangeman - I know I need to learn some patience, lol. Since they only took 1.5 liters, there was still plenty of moisture in the pots. Hopefully the high perlite content gives them enough aeration. I'll be sure to wait longer next time, it's just so hard not to DO something. Vertical growth had almost stopped for a few days, although the stalks were fattening up like crazy.

The main reason I added Superthrive was because I added a little more soil to get it right up to the seed leaves, and wanted to encourage root growth along that part of the stem. I've been using it on some of my outdoor non-pot plants, and it's amazing how they've taken off!

Trust me when they start flowering and you realize how much you really have to do next time you'll see how easy it is just to sit and watch your babies when they are just starting off lol. Don't worry I'm on my first grow and I was just like that in the beginning. I still over analyze stuff and worry but we'll over come that when we get used to it lol.

im just barely getting used to leaving them alone.
the new lite cycle has forced me to only visit in the morning when i have very little time to spare.
they do fine left alone a while. and it actually frees up time for me to do other things i been neglecting.:D

As was told to me to a very sharp mind....the electric company doesn't give a rat's ass how much energy you use as long as you pay for it.....on time. They couldn't care less what you're doing with it as long as you are paying for it.....again.....on time.

Rock, do you go 8 days between waterings? That just seems like a long time to me....soil too heavy? I'm no soil pro for sure but had to stick my nose in.....:D

PS....I wouldn't make a habit of letting kitty lick up the water but in small doses it won't hurt her.....she's a normal cat right....not ill or old....well even old doesn't matter if she's healthy. ....babble babble.....:cool:

WH- actually, it varies on the watering schedule.
each girl is different, for a long time they were diff sizes too.
also, some days are warmer or drier than others.
thats why i recomend the meter, it proved to be diff than finger testing enuf times to trust it.
i just go by the meter.

sometimes 3-4 days, sometimes longer.

I know what ya mean. When my plants were vegging and the lights were off and I didn't get a chance to see them the day before I'd go down there and turn on the lamp light I sat in there as an emergency light lol. But in flowering that's a no-no so I have to suffer with not seeing them, I guess that helped me to stop being so eager to go down there and bother em lol.

I was considering getting the Joey's Mix, as a lot of his strains interest me, and I don't have the money to buy them all, but decided to order Power Stout instead. I'll be watching this though, to see how they turn out. Good luck.

Swapped the cools for 40W daylights. Working on bud room. No sign of preflowers yet. Going to run out of veg room soon.

In all the years I've been partaking of the herb, I've never known what strain I've been smoking. Occasionally I would come across a bag that has a taste/flavour/high that I really really enjoy. It tends to be lighter green, fluffy buds, with a sweet citrusy aroma, and an energetic cerebral high. I've always figured this kind was a sativa, maybe all sativas are like that, dunno.

Anyway, #2 smells just like that. Of all of them, I'm hoping it's a female the most. If she is, I want to be sure and preserve her. I'm still trying to decide whether to go ahead and flower her, and reveg... or wait until she's big enough to take some decent clones. She has lots and lots of branching going on, working on 7 nodes in under 4 inches. Is that good? Or is it too compact...

I love the fast growth! Your plants are very happy. And don't expect pre-flowers for like another 6 weeks lol. Also do you plan on training them or doing anything? Like topping, tying down?

I thought you could have preflowers as early as 5 weeks? The oldest are about 6 weeks now.

I wasn't going to top or anything this first time around. Just wanted to see how they grow naturally and figure it out from there. The room is 6' high, so I can grow 4' comfortably. I'm not looking to get huge yields right now, just trying to get the ball rolling. A couple of good mothers is all I'm really after for now.

Running out of veg room though, whattodo whattodo... clone, flower, pray they sex soon...

6 and 7 weeks now. All are showing preflowers, 4 are definite female. Flipping in a few days, after I take some clones.

Anyway, #2 (my favourite) has some weird growth, I'm wondering if it's auto flowering? They're still all under 24/0.

She has female preflowers, and I know it's hard to see in the pic, but the new growth is all squiggly like it's producing buds. I think Lowrider does that as well, because of it's Ruderalis auto-flowering traits (correct me if I'm wrong), but this seems to be a sativa dom. I was thinking it could be a Cindy or hybrid, based on Joey's strains.

Any thoughts?

Thank-you! They're all about 2 months old now, give or take. I thought I'd be in here a lot more, posting frantic pics of all my problems, but it's been pretty easy so far.

I've been busy, so I've just been watering/feeding them basically. The 4 in the front have some light lst going on, and 3 of those are definite female, 1 is almost definite male. The two in the back I let grow natural. The one in the far corner is definite female.

The big one in the middle, and in the second pic, is little plant #6, that had trouble getting out of it's seed casing. Such a mighty Indica it is now. It's just starting to show sex, so fingers crossed.

And I cut some clones. Basically been spraying them with weak superthrive solution at first, now I'm foliar feeding with light nutes, as some of them look N deprived.

I took a look at #6's roots, and it needs replanting, so I'm going to put them all in 5 gallon buckets, and start flowering in a few days.
