ph problems w/ Miracle Gro Organic Choice
i'm using miracle gro organic because i thought it was a good choice...many ppl have said mg is a bad idea...i was wondering what ppl thought of the organic version. the reason i ask is because i'm having acidic ph problems which i thought would not occur with their organic product line.this is what the site says about the organic choice...do u think its the reason i'm having the ph problems
This product is regionally formulated with organic materials (derived from one or more of the following: forest products, peat humus, or compost) sphagnum peat, composted manure (in Florida, cow manure) and pasteurized, pelleted poultry litter.
Total nitrogen (N) â?? .10% â?? (This product contains .097% slow available nitrogen.)
Available phosphate (P2O5) â?? .05%
Soluble potash (K2O) â?? .10%
My question is was this a bad choice...i thought mg organic would eliminate the problems associated w/ regular miracle grow....btw does that mean the soil is 10-5-10 or 1-.5-1...thanks for any advice and let me know what you think about this soil choice...i've also been adding pure blend gro once a week at 1/2 strength...thanks for any advice

The soil is 1.0-.5-1.0.. What is your pH? It is probably the peat moss it is very acidic. You can add wood ashes... They are full of potassium and are alkaline. You could also go buy some better soil and mix it half and half.

awesome...great advice...i'm gonna buy a couple bags of foxfarm and mix it with the miracle grow organic choice until then i'll either get some lime or try the wood ashes...my ph is between 5-5.5...so i'm rather troubled that it got that low...this is my 1st indoor grow so i've never really dealt with ph

I mixed organic choice with hyponex sterile soil bag to bag, and added extra perlite. Using pure blend pro. And had Absolutely no problem! I grew a NYCD, a Cali Orange skunk, and an Afgani. All 3 grew beautifully. I added just water for 2 weeks then alternate water, and PBP. With my well water. I add PBP, and get 5.9 ph.
I totally do recommend Miracle gro organic choice. I think you have other issues that won't be resolved by buying overpriced foxfarm soil.
1. Are you adjusting ph of water/solution before adding to pot?
2 Why did you post a query titled ph problems?; Yet never once mention the ph value of your overflow???
3 What is your ph?

well, currently i only have a soil ph tester, which i hear is very poor, but i have a digital one on the way...the ph of the soil is between 5-5.5, when the digital comes i will let you kno the ph of the run off...currently i've been unable to ckeck the ph of my water without the tester...i'm also using pro grow at 1/4-1/2 strength...once a week...hope this gives more info

I started my plants in regular mg potting soil with time release ferts and also had an acidic problem. pH adjusted my water to 8 the first 2-3 waterings and then runoff was ~6.5. Transplanted into Scotts soil with phosphorus and have been using pH adjusted water since and pH has stayed ~6.5.

1st ...using organic soil you shouldn't have to nute at all. 2nd. Ph for soil is 6.5-7.0; So, you don't need to do anything, but lower it just a bit. (your tap water)
5.0-5.5 is the problem of all oyur problems. WAAAAAAY TOO LOW. Peace
back later.

ok, so i have earthjuice ph up on the way to raise the ph of my soil...for now should i make the water more alkaline by adding baking soda in order to raise the ph of my soil or will that not work? thanks in advance

Really, if it is on they way...wait. I used the baking soda, and hated it. Boy , I just went through all this, and it feels like a flashback ;)!Those soil testers are crap, so I wouldn't take your measurement as the holy grail. If you need to water, you could go buy distilled water -we know the ph is 7 for this, BUT your water is 7.2, which is VERY close and you can just use that-...water your plant, then ck the runoff ph with your new meter. Then you will know your true ph of your soil.
Then you can see if you really indeed have anymore problems. You can always flush (water plant with three times it's container size, til runoff is clear) well instead of using the ph up if you are in a complete hurry! Your tap is almost perfect!
Let us know if your soil is in fact that low, before you do anything crazy...lol

Bree, you can save yourself a ton of $$ and use a Brita water filter to bring your high PH down to a 6-6.5 by only running tap water through it! I've been battling this desert water for many years now and until I found out about Brita's water system I either bought bottled water or used PH down products which both are a pain in the ass! I bought a 2nd filtering pitcher a few months ago to cut down on the filtering time...they're only 16 bucks at Walmart!

I saw those at TSC, AND SO WANTED TO BUY ONE!! does it cut down on the other sediments in the water as well? I have a lot of calcium iron rust.
Sorry for hijacking the thread!

Yes, once tap water is run through the filter it's crystal clear. The label says it also removes 99% of any chlorine along with 99.9% of particulates...
It truly is a miracle gadget!

Ummmm....my humble opinion on Britta filters. They aren't worth the money.
Running my well water through a britta actually raised the ph.....started at 8 and ended up over 10. Also I have a ppm meter and my well water is at 150-170 ppms. After Britta...ppms 60-75. RO...10-15. My hydro guy (whom I think is God)really tried to discourage me from buying one.....in his view the britta merely takes out the good minerals (calcium, etc) and leaves the bad stuff in. I didn't listen to him at the time.....but sure did later. ;)
PS Bree I will be happy to send it to you if I haven't run over it with my car or something if you'd like it.....for free.

NO. I am sorry these other members are not paying any attention to you.
You don't ph soil. If you want to buffer soil...you use pulverized dolomitic lime.
Otherwise you just ph your solution. and water. In your case you claim a ph of 7.2 from the tap. I would just use that, and let the soil balance itself out.
I use a 90 $ ro-unit off ebay 4-5 stage, and have had it for 2 years. Great stuff. Ph always stays consistent.

I never use dthat soil. Like I said, I had no problem with MG organic choice. never used the happy frog.
My answer would be NO, not necessaily; What size pot you are in?
What size pot are you transplanting to?
wish you had piks...
