Opie Yutts is the only sane person here. The extreme consistency of hydro is exactly what I love it about it.Quote:

Here, here! Darn tootn, and stuff.
Kushette update? Or does she have her own thread now?
It's taken me a few days to get the problem identified but it comes down to my (hanna) meter being screwed up and giving me the incorrect ph on all my plants.......despite the fact that it calibrates dead on for both 7.01 and 4.01. I love that. :wtf:
It's been reading way low....I believe because of colder temps in the w/f buckets. I was finally able to figure it out by pulling out my OLD hanna and calibrating and working with that. (the "old" hanna is actually the better one but more of a hassle to use.)
The one taller Sour Northern Lights x Neville's Haze got hit the hardest. I actually was thinking nuteburn and the only reason I'm sure it isn't is because the leaves themselves are uncurling (from the bottom of the plant up) and raising back up slowly now that the ph has been corrected. If it WERE nuteburn....the leaves would dry up and die....as it is they are slow returning to normal.
I'll post another pic once they are done. They may not heal 100% but it will be pretty close even if they don't come back all the way.
The second SNL x NH....the shorter plant seems completely unaffected by the ph swings and problems. Same batch of seeds and exact same environment....who knows WHAT the hell they are thinking? :wtf:
I have a new ph meter on the way that i'm excited about...supposed to be the bees knees of ph meters. It will be WONDERFUL to be able to trust what the damn meter is telling me.
So I just got my brand new digital 400w ballast in the mail and have it up and running for the seedlings. I had a great reflector already so added a Dayton muffin fan (Rhizome's idea) and X-C (my electrical man :D) helped me wire it and its GREAT!!! The seedlings were a touch blown away by the brightness at first but are starting to want the light lower now.
The seedling on the left is a cotton candy (one of my favorites ) and the smaller one on the right is a Church plant (I've never tried the Church.....yet. :D)
All in all she is doing very well. She's got all the cfls now and I think she likes that.....doesn't seem overwhelmed by too much light or anything. She has lost a few leaves but I'm not sure if that's due to ph problems or just a normal part of this process since I haven't tried this before.
She has ONE lower branch that still "leaks" regularly. Everything else has stopped. I actually clamped a hemostat to the branch which worked to stop the water but then everything simply backed up to the higher branches (which had previously been dry) so I just keep changing the clip and paper towel and let it be.
I think she has had some ph issues as well but doesn't show it as much.....that's my thought anyway.
She HAS shed quite a bit of roots so the whole root mass HAS gotten smaller. HOWEVER....she really is NOT too far off from the root mass clogging that I got before so I'm beginning to wonder if I will have drill MORE holes in that bucket.....she has two side rows but that may not be enough. While I'd rather NOT drill into this plant the fact is she IS in my living room and there is NO WAY I can let this plant flood out in there.
That's a bummer about your PH meter. I've often wondered if both my PH and PPM pens are telling me the truth, but once you get a system down it doesn't matter if they are off, as long as they are consistent.
What's a muffin fan? Is that the little computer-type fan I see in the photo? And is the hood open and the hot air blows out the bottom?
Looks like the reveg still has promise. It is normal for some leaves to get yellow and fall off. That's why you want to make sure you leave enough leaves when you are cutting the plants back. Also if your nutes aren't quite right she can eat herself to survive.
Its REALLY frustrating with the ph crap....hopefully the new meter will solve my problems with it.
The reflector is actually the one I used for my 1kw light until I got my cool tube. There's glass at the bottom of the reflector so the little fan is actually pulling the air through the vents on the other side and straight accross.
The 400w really has very little heat compared to the 1k. What lighting do you have Opie?
Weedhound my friend always an education when I read your logs. How you knew I was considering flowering & re vegging my bonsai mother I have been working on I don't know. But I will be following your re veg with interest. By the way if thats what you serve for Sunday dinner set me out a plate I'll be over this weekend ;-)
I've got a 400W MH cool tube and a 600W HPS sealed hood (basically a cool tube, without the tube shape). Been tossing around the idea of trying an all CFL veg cycle though. My plants in veg grow way faster than I need them too.Quote:

Hey Jack....long time no see...:). What are you growing these days?
Hi Sis .
You wern't kidding about the 2 Snl x N.H plants . They're crazy diferent . All 4 I did here looked very very much like the 1st. of your pics a cpl. posts back . The only other plant in the room at the time of the breeding was a single Church plant and we didn't see any nanas on it , you may have a Snl / N.H x Church ? Only god really knows . Either way they look real good .
Your Weedhounds mix / Indica Dom. plant here is going nutz btw , even after me torturing it like I did . Buds all over it on 13th day of bloom . When we do the crazy dirt grow this summer I promise I'll tryn make you a mess of femin. seeds from this strain , maybe "Daddysgirl" also .
Maybe we'll get somemore feedback on your strain in the near future . Santa sent 9 strains / 60 beans to our Big Blue furry Brother up there by the Northpole to try out , 10 of which were W/H Mix . :)
God Bless Sis .

Hey Weedhound
Yea has been a while since I posted regularly, been a lot of rumors around my area that our version of your DEA had got tech savvy. Personally I think it was just some folk fishing my friend who I helped get set up to see why they are no longer smoking the solid plastic But better safe than busted & our sadist officers do like kicking the doors in on christmas morning.
Finished my run of clones before going to the Dam. Only real plant I have just now is my attempt at a bonsai mother. Have added some pics. It is in soil now but it didn't start that way. Did the usual with the clones plonked them in the 1" rockwool cubes then the 4 " cubes and hand watered untill the roots show through. The extra 2, I put in pots with hydroton surrounding the cube & hand watered. After the first lot of LST & shaping I re potted one cutting all the hydroton & roots off untill it was back at the rockwool cube then stuck it in a pot with soil. My friend is having a go at doing me the clones for my next run & I am germing some Super Silver Haze, Crimea Blue & Violator Kush. Going to try something similar with those in the mothering cabinet I am working on. On top of that I need to get two grow tents, the cool shade etc.. so its time to spend cash again. Great hobby/addiction but it costs almost as much as another child, no wonder we call the plants babies.:)
If the clones that are being prep'd for me take ok then I was thinking of flowering this mother, then re vegging it. At the end I was thinking of finding a nice place outside for it where I could stick it & let it go wild. Would like to see a natural strain develop where I live.
That's a lot of green in a little space. Nice LST.
Cheers Opie, I wouldn't show you the original cabinet I had her in out of shame. Wasn't any bigger than she is now so I guess the build up of green was probably helped by the fact the lights weren't so much above her as in the middle & surrounding her.
WH, I'm interested in this since I believe we are using the same gear: so what PH pen are you using now? And the bad Hanna -- I want to know what model it is that has been giving false readings. Also what is the new meter you are getting?Quote:

SO......I've learned a few painful lessons about the ph and tds meters in the past week or so. First my hanna model # 98130 starting flaking out with ph measurements. I changed the battery and probe recently so no excuses there....simply erratic readings that cause me to adjust the ph too high (reading way low) even though I checked it frequently and it read calibration solutions dead on. Sometimes the reading was correct....sometimes not. Sometimes it would read the same thing two different ways within a few minutes It was reading the ppms fine though.
So second meter...a hanna 91829 WAS working fine but then crashed out yesterday leaving me with no way to measure ppms and although the ph function worked....it had to be recalibrated every few hours (and checked constantly to make sure it was still calibrated.) So here is what I have learned so far:
1. I hate my hannas and will never buy a hanna again.
2. You need to have a back up ph tester for your f*cking back up ph tester Buy some drops to have on hand......at least those are consistent.
3. I hate my hannas and will never buy a hanna again.
I have a truncheon ph tester on the way....somewhat pricey but I have heard NOTHING but great things about them and am sick to death of wondering if the ph tester is working TODAY and these came highly recommended. Between calibrating the stupid SECOND hanna every few minutes and the drops I'll make it until it arrives......:D
I picked up an oakton tds tester today also. Very basic....only reads tds....not e.c but super easy to calibrate and very easy to use. If I find I miss having an e.c. reading I'll buy another meter since I have discovered it doesn't matter HOW MANY you have on hand....you never have enough. I don't usually go by e.c. though so not sure if I will miss it or not.
Sounds like your having a bad week for gadgets WH. Are these testing solutions widely available my PH meter came second hand read the bottled water as the 7.0 printed, but I never thought it could be off.
Hi Jack....you know you turned into a growing monster when my back was turned....what's up with that? :D
Yes....they are standard solutions that you buy and include some with a ph of 7.01 and 4.01 (some ph meters require a 2 point calibration.....which I don't understand what that means but you have to use both solutions with 2 point calibration) and also tds and ec solutions set at a standard strength (i use tds 1500) to keep your meters calibrated and working correctly. ;)
JackHerer, the calibration solutions are available on line or at hydro shops. You should calibrate at least every 6 months, 3 is more safe. Also do not use old solutions as they can be wrong (found out the hard way). Grab the farthest one back on the shelves, not the older ones in the front that they want you to buy.
Everyone, I've had pretty good luck with my Control Wizard brand stuff. Inexpensive, durable, and accurate (I think). I want to buy a real nice expensive one some day soon, but my separate PPM and PH meters have done me real good so far. Also low batteries give false readings. I found that out the hard way as well. The batteries that came in my PPM pen were almost dead. I took it back and they gladly replaced them. And those batteries can cost almost as much as a new pen.
In case you lost your directions, I'll save you some trouble: You calibrate the 7 first and the 4 second.Quote:

Thanks I consider your comments a sincere compliment WH all I have learned is that as was explained during my grow log along with the extra tips on how to use the search function here. I am just happy the time I am spending learning is proving worthwhile & glad you like me midget mommie.
I dismantled my cupboard & put the clothes back into it to much a security issue with the gas engineers doing an annual service on the boiler next door to it. Hence the two tents I just bought on ebay today, skint again but no worries there just getting my share of the cash before the children have it all for christmas.:rasta:
I'll of course get some pics going of my new strains when they start popping up, but I'll probably do a current growings on type thread ala Xcrispi as I can't garauntee posting regularly enough to make a grow log worthwhile to the community.
Have had several things happen in the last week. Guess c-dot isn't the only one going through changes. :wtf:
First is Kushette. I'm afraid she is no more. :( I had been noticing that she was starting to take longer and longer to drain water and I was starting to get VERY concerned about flooding since that seems to be a favorite trick of my plants in the w/fs. I drilled several extra holes in the sides of her bucket but I noticed that it really was NOT seeming to make much difference. If you look at the pics below I'm sure you will see why.
While I knew she was living on borrowed time I DID have an VERY unexpected thing happen which made my mind up for me. I found SEEDS in my most recent grow....KUSHETTE SEEDS!!! :yippee: So far I have found SIX beautiful big looking seeds with a sem-thorough look through my stash and there may very well be a few more.
This is the first time EVER I have found seeds in my plants. I've always trusted Reverse to take care of that issue for me....and until now it always has. Why did I get seeds this time? No clue. But I DEFINITELY consider it my own little X-mas present from Kushette.:thumbsup:
:jumphappy:
So with the help of my VERY good friend X-C (*hug*) I've FINALLY managed to accomplish making my waterfarms a recirculating system and may I say it has been worth the wait. I LOVE this new sytem and so do my plants.....they have commenced to growing like giant redwood trees in a speedrace or something. This is a strain that X-Crispi got 19 oz off of one plant and while I don't think mine will be doing anything along that line they certainly are NOT wanting in the bud department. And they are only HAFLWAY towards the finish mark.
The system is pretty much jerryrigged. I was seriously too afraid to drill holes in the w/f's to accomplish a daisy chain effect so I had to work something out that would pull the water from the buckets without simply pulling the water from the original rez and putting it back (the "path of least resistance" theory) so in the end I set things up on a timer with the tubing set up in such a way that the path of least resistance was from the buckets to the pump and not from anywhere else. I FINALLY got that to happen the way I wanted. :yippee:
The ph has stabilized very well.....goes up about 0.3-0.4 a day which is a HUGE difference from before. The ph would EASILY rise a point a day during this stage on out in the grow and this appears to have held that in check. I adjust ph once a day from ONE bucket.....just like X-C says.....and no having to lift the plants out of the w/f's to check things.......how NICE for my back.
Right now I have the system set up to run once every four hours (six times a day) but with the cute little digital timer I can do it up to 12-14 times a day if needed. So far every four hours seems to be working wonderfully so it may be awhile before I change that around and see if more or less works better. ;)
Good stuff WH, I tried twice to get a recirc system to work but I have such a small space it is not worth the hassle - the tubing bends were too sharp and nothing could be moved around at all. Must have wasted $50 and a weeks worth of free time trying, but the space constraint kicked my butt.
Good news is that I have enough supplies to try it again once I reconfigure my grow space. But instead I have decided to try my hand at a SCROG, since that approach seems most well suited to my small area and 400W HPS lighting.
P.S. Love that Kushette left behind gifts for the holidy season... :) Stop by my new log sometime as I am just getting the BD's set to go into the area today or tomorrow.
Thanks MVP....you should have seen my face when I found one. I was grinding some weed in a strainer and there was one little seed sitting there. At first i didn't even recognize that it WAS a seed......it's been so LONG!!! And the sloooooow trip through my brain that:
1. It truly WAS a seed
2. The seed was a female
3. The seed was from Kushette
4. THERE MAY BE MORE OF THEM!!!!!
And it snowballed from there. :D
Oh happy day.
You have a lot of very interesting stuff happening WH glad its all in the one thread. Nice christmas present from your plant.
Can't wait to see a 19oz plant.

Wow....you aren't one for talking things out are you? :S2: You're a hard one to love Opie......
BUT I DO SO WHAT THE HELL RIGHT? :D
I have SEEDS....i'm so happy about that I could split!! I've been watching her.....seeing the progression of slower and slower draining......but I just COULDN'T do it so the seeds ROCKED!! I'd actually been wondering if a hammer and some knitting needles or some thing could put a few drain holes down in her "rootball" if that's what you want to call it. Looking at it now......I seriously doubt it would have worked. :wtf:
Hey Sis .
Glad the recirc. is working out for you . It was the biggest improvement I made to my system yet . Makes it almost manageable .
Here's pics. of the Snl x Nev. Haze you asked for from the last grow . We've got about 6-7 ounces left now . :stoned:
Talk more tomorrow when I have some time .
Peace

WH,
I'm not sure if you've said already, but what was that medium for kushette, and have you used it before? It looks like common aquarium gravel. I know you probably want closure and want to move on. I was just curious. I am very glad for you about the seeds. Sounds very near to what just happened to me with my BBxNL. I've never got seeds in a grow before, but this time in 6 plants I had 8 seeds, and I'm very happy about it. I was trying to revert a mom of those seeds to veg, and until a couple days ago I had serious doubts about her return. Her sister was not as lucky. http://boards.cannabis.com/basic-gro...flowering.html
:) Happy day, both you and I. Similar stuff, from forces on high. :)
xcrispi,
Fine job I must say there ol' chap. Very good work. I want to pack my cereal bowl and live in your buds.
I read that thread of yours opie. Glad you got some seeds out of the one you wanted as well. That could NOT have happened better imo. :)
Higromite. Here is what I use as a medium. I've tried hydroton and just had WAY too many issues with it and hydrotons' light weight aside......it caused MANY more problems than it solved.
The only real issue I have with the higromite is its weight.....it weighs like a bucketful of....ROCKS; go figure. Other than that I've found it to be a great medium and the BUTTLOAD of silica in it really seems to help my plants stay healthier and not suffer as many problems with fert build-up as I seemed to deal with when using hydroton either.
While the higromite IS reusable it's just as hard to pick out from that mess of roots as hydroton would be so I end up using new each time these days.
Btw....both higromite and hydroton are my hydro store owner's top choices for mediums used for a waterfarm.
Edit: One other thing I have to say is a disadvantage to using higromite....algae LOVES it and will grow like mad ion it ANYWHERE it can. That was the only other thing I liked about hydroton..(besides how light it was) was that algae really didn't grow well on it at all.
Too late Opie I've already sold the house and built a tree house in Xcrispi's buds.
You do give a noob a target to aim for with those DWC systems. Is there one around that would fit conveniently in a 1.2m x 1.2m floorspace. Had a look on ebay but the only recirc system I saw was for six buckets & I think the cramp would outweigh any advantage of getting each plant into its own bucket.
Xcrispi that pic 3 has some excellent colour in it. What strain is that?
Thanx - Jack - Opie for kind words -n- Karma .Quote:

Weedhound - I think we let these go 10 - 11 weeks and prob. coulda gone a week or so more . Your plants are gonna love you for the .3 - .4 swing verses a full point each day .
I often thought about how close my plants were to nute lock out and the stress of being a cool ph 1 day -n- on the verg of nute lock out the next over -n- over -n- over = nasty vicious cycle w/o the system recirculating .
Jack - About systems = I'd give Image reapers log a look man . He can fit 1 dwc monster in his cab. w/ a 400 hps and it's even a tight fit . Texas Hydro has a nice cheap 5 gal. bucket like the ones I run turn key for like $40.00 .
A cpl. more pics of SNL x Nevilles Haze .
Later Sis.

Damn Crispi, those turned out very nice! I tried time and time again to build a recirc system but space constraints make it impractical. Now I'm doing 2 DWC buckets under a screen and calling it Quasi-SCROG... I can only hope that my lil system turns out buds looking half as good as those monsters. Love the pictures.... *wipes drool from mouth* Keep on Truckin' my friend
MVP
No where NEAR as gorgeous as X-C's but hey, you can only have one real magic man in the crowd. ;)
They're REALLY starting to get some mass on them. They are also both starting to show a K def so I spent the morning flushing them with plain ph'd water with only fair results. I'm going to have to flush them with Florakleen to really do it thoroughly because the roots are starting to do their usual growing everwhere thing and clogging some holes here and there. :wtf: I'll probably do that on Wed......need to build up my RO water supply first. They really ARE starting to grow great guns and I don't want anything to interrupt that. :)
But now they're back....first one is my cotton candy. She's doing VERY well since I've gotten the ph issues under control with a new meter and have the 400w mh running. I topped her a few days ago and she is just starting to get going.
The second one is the church. This plant has struggled quite a bit....first due to the ph issues which seemed to hit it MUCH harder than the CC and then it also did not do as well under the new light for quite a while. Seemed MUCH more sensitive to the mh light than the cc but I have no idea how much of that was (or is) ph related.....if at all.
I''ve just started two new seeds......one Dutch Dragon and one Power Plant. I'm still very up in the air about whether I will take the church plant through flowering.....it's had so many problems I don't feel it's a good example of a ganja plant but I may since she's improved quite a bit lately.
WOW they all look great through my eyes. so nice job as alwase.
