Flowering 2 Master Kush
I would read Stinky's thread on cloning first, the noob thread I believe.
In short I would:
- do it during the final flush for best chance of success
- choose lower shoot with very little flowering
- use razor blade to cut, sterilize with alcohol first
- cuts should be ~ 3 inches in length total
- cut at 45 degree angle and scrape gently the outside of the stem (bottom 1/2 inch)
- carefully remove buds, but keep the sun leaves
- after cutting and scraping, place stem in water immediately so stem doesn't close up
- use a rooting hormone (Olivia's or Root Tech gel)
- use peat pods or root cube, rockwool, etc (you want to be able to observe the roots growing out of the bottom of the medium
- place under CFL, about 6 inches from light
- keep very high moisture and 24 hour light (humidity tent using a baggie)
- keep the little cuts warm (I use a heating pad under the container - helps but not critial)
I will try to dig up some info for you on how to do it step by step. Most importantly, if needed lightly mist them regularly 2-3x daily to keep humidity high.
Expect that it will take 10 days or longer to see roots, maybe even up to 3 weeks. I might just have to try this to see tomorrow to see how well it works.

Well I did read Stinky's thread on cloning....but she writes like someone who knows their shit too well and has left out some details that interest me. For instance...what about Wiltproof? She talks about NOT spraying the clones themselves while others say you should. Sounds like it's time to talk to my hydro guy cause he realizes I need very specific instructions in easy language with no big words. :wtf:
MVP...thanks VERY much for that info....it helps TONS. I'll take all I can get. When you talk about removing the flowers should I try to leave even the sugar leaves on (those crusty small pups) and pick the bud off around them?
Rhizome said while it can be done it would be CHALLENGING (and he was actually talking about Rock and not even my situation).....that makes me nervous right there. I've given thought to reveg but especially with a plant that size I just don't have anywhere to put it with 24 hour lighting....not to mention the roots are already ABSOLUTELY FULL in the bucket.....and I DONT mean rootbound....I mean FULL. There are more roots on this thing than ANY of my previous grows.

Hey WH, I saw Opie talking in a separate thread about cloning 2 weeks prior to harvest (if I understood it right) so I asked 'em to stop by and give some input here... from the time stamp on the post it was middle of the night but hopefully we'll get some additional thoughts on the topic.

Flowering 2 Master Kush
Oh SUPER!! Thanks. :) I'm just such a peanuthead when it comes to stuff...seems like i always have a million q's when I actually go to do things that I can't find in the instructions so I've found that ABSORBING absolutely as much info as possible at least gives me an edge when I hit a problem that I didn't think about (and i WILL hit a problem....) Going to have to get me my little humidity supplies and I have Clonex but is the Dip and Grow really as good as Stinky says? I'd have to buy that and toss the Clonex but if its THAT great.......

Flowering 2 Master Kush
What type of grow medium are you planning to use? Peat pods? Rockwoot? Root Cubes? They all will work, but I learned on peat pods - they look like little coasters but when you add water they puff up and look like a big brown marshmellow of sorts.
From my perspective the rooting hormone is simply a personal choice. Back in the day (15 years ago) I used Olivia's Solution - a liquid- with peat pods and had a good success rate. Today I'm using Root Tech gel with rockwool and having a similar success rate. It's six on one hand, half-dozen on the other IMHO.
Stinky is right to not spray the cuts directly if possible, but to spray the tray and humidity dome to create the moisture.
Here are a few pics I just shot for you a minute ago:
pic 1 = little super skunk clone, very small but about the right size to stand up in a cube
pic 2 = roots starting to show thru, but needs more time to grow stronger before transplanting. Its like christmas day when you see the first tiny roots like this
pic 3 = poor lonely girl in a big dome. Notice I sprayed the tray and the dome to create moisture but not the leaves. Spraying the leaves will leach them, don't spray leaves
pic 4 = the dome on its shelf, heating pad beneath on low, under 2' flour fixture daylight tubes
pic 5 = her sister I transplanted yesterday. she was a bigger cut and rooted a few days quicker. she's a Super Skunk so I named her Pepe (as in Le Peuw)

Flowering 2 Master Kush
I'll be using the rapid rooters....I start my seeds off in them as well and love I them....afraid of rockwool. Thanks for the photos.....visuals help me TONS!! I notice you did not cut your leaves down to an inch like Stinky does...any reason for that?
I remember when I tried cloning before (poorly) I sprayed the top of the dome which then dripped down onto the leaves themselves so should I limit spraying to sides and bottom of tray and dome? And should the inside of the dome be misted constantly...like 24/7 you should be seeing humidity in there?
-
Flowering 2 Master Kush
Yes I do cut leaves back when necessary. Take a look at pic 5 - Ms Pepe - her leaves were cut in half to lower transpiration. The smaller girl was so little I did not want to eliminate leaf surface that synthesize the light. In the tray/dome I mist all surfaces including the lid but use a fine mist setting and 'fog' it rather than saturate the dome.
Since I use a heating pad it tends to dry up the moisture so I spray 3-4 times a day or more and have to watch the medium so make sure it does not dry out. I also water my medium very gently from the bottom when it dries out a bit (pick her up, turn her upside down, use a dropper to apply water til its moist on the bottom) - I'm encouraging the roots to grow down to the moisture and heat.

Flowering 2 Master Kush
Excellent excellent....one last question (right.....:D) If you were to take a lower branch....you want it 3 inches long.....would you carefully clip the buds off and leave ALL the sun and sugar leaves? And lets say you have a 3 inch long bud.....should you make your clone bigger and make sure you leave some "regular" stem to scarify (Opie's word) and place into the medium or just snip off the bud from that 3 inches and pop it in? In other words should I take a six inch cutting if the top three inches are all bud? This plant is large enough that if I cut below the "next node" that's a fair amount of branch. Does it have to be snipped just below a node?

Hey WH, gotta run to pick up family at the airport... I'll answer in a couple of hours. Also if you have Cervantes' book it has a good step by step section on cloning. If not I can help you with that as well. I'll post back after 2pm PT, let me know any other Q's or pics you want and I'll answer them too.

Flowering 2 Master Kush
First off, damn fine looking plants you got there Weedhound, and nice looking nugs of yours MVP. I want to crawl inside both of yours.
I don't think I was clear about my cloning. I think MVP was under the assumption that two weeks before harvest I take cuttings from my flowering plants to start the next grow. This could be done, but I would take the cuttings about 1 month before harvest, maybe even 5 or 6 weeks. What I was trying to say, and sorry for the confusion, was that I take cuttings from my mother plants 2 weeks before harvest time, not from my flowering plants. Cloning from budding plants is doable, but they take much longer to root since they must first revert back to veg. This method has a higher casualty rate, since they are in the cloner a long time, giving them more chances at mold or rot, and any number of other maladies.
If you are taking cuttings from flowering plants, try to get a bud that has a bunch of fan leaves, or as many healthy leaves as possible. Normally you try to get older cuttings from the bottom areas of the plant. You can remove the buds, but this is slightly more dangerous. You do not need to cut leaves in half unless your cutting is pretty big and there is a bunch of foliage. You do this so that the plant concentrates on root production instead of photosynthesis. The downside to doing this, and it becomes especially important if you took cuttings from flowering plants, is that the plant may eat too much of itself while it is getting adequate roots. In my system the plants usually start eating themselves toward the end of their stay in the cloner, and if I donā??t leave enough leaves on the plant, they could eat themselves to death before getting adequate roots. It is common for plants to eat themselves during the last bits of cloning and flowering. Thatā??s usually whatā??s going on with the yellowing leaves.
Now if youā??re interested, hereā??s how I clone. I made a cheapo aerocloner which absolutely works wonderful. Probably as good as the expensive aeroponic cloners. It is very rare that a plant wont make it, maybe 2 out of 100. I take a cutting 4 or 5 inches tall, leaving as much stem on as possible. I put a few more cuttings than I need in a bucket and make sure they are covered with cold water for about 30 minutes. The cold water makes them perk up real nice. I like to have extra clones going if possible, then use the ones with the biggest root masses, and toss the others or throw them out in the woods if itā??s spring or summertime.
I make sure everything is ready before starting, because you donā??t want to leave them out of water or uncovered very long. Once you start you should not stop until youā??re finished, and you should try to work fast. I keep a bottle of water nearby to mist them occasionally as I am putting them in the cloner. I start the bubbles, then get a cutting and lay it on a board or something flat. I scarify it (scrape off the outer membrane of the bottom inch or so - search ā??scarificationā?), then cut off the bottom at a 45 degree angle. The theory behind the angle is it will give you slightly more surface area for roots to form on. I dip the scarified part in powdered rooting hormone and put them it in the cloner. Most of the powder eventually gets washed off, but a little stays on. The water has a very small amount of B1 such as SuperThrive in it, and it should stay 2 or 3 inches below the roots.
I keep the bubbles going 24/7 until they start getting roots, then I go to 45 minutes off and 45 on (I think). Plants do much better and grow roots faster and bigger if they must search for moisture from time to time. One small tube fluorescent on all the time. They donā??t need or want much light at this point. I keep them covered with a humidity dome (just another Tupperware container the same size) all the time, except for at least twice per day when I take off the dome and blow some air into it and into the canopy. The more you can do this the better. I donā??t ever spritz them since I am usually battling too much humidity, sometimes even needing to pick out mold or rotted leaves toward the end. Wherever the leaves touch anything other than themselves, thatā??s where the mold usually starts.
Once there is some good roots, I start hardening the clones. I take off the dome and watch them closely until they start to wilt, then I put it back on. Once the get perked up again, I do it some more. Pretty soon they will not need a humidity dome at all, and they can be put into the system. If one wilts a little due to lack of proper hardening, I put a baggie over it.
Sometimes I revert my budded plants back to veg. I just make sure I leave as much foliage on the plant as possible, and cut off about the top half of the plant. If you have like 10 or 15 good leaves on the plant it should revert without a problem. Just change the light schedule and nutrients. Some people say it will revert faster if you have a 24/0 light schedule, but I havenā??t really seen evidence of this, having tried both ways. The plants look like they hibernate for a couple weeks or so, then you should start seeing new growth.

PS, If you desire, you can also spray an antifungal or an antiwilt product on rooting clones. I don't use antiwilt, but I use an antifungal. It seems to help with mold, but it adds moisture, which promotes the growth of mold.

Flowering 2 Master Kush
Oh bless you Opie for all that information. I'm starting to really lean towards revegging the plant and taking clones off that so I need ALL the info I can get. You told me before about scarifyiing so I'm set on that....(scalpels from my hydro guy) and that really helps about the revegging. When you say leave the bottom 1/2 of the plant do I leave all the buds or take everything and just leave some fan leaves? I hope I don't have to leave the buds on its because then I wouldn't be able to use them right?
Are "good leaves" the younger sun leaves? And if you had your plant on say 1200 ppm would you flush it first and then re-introduce grow nutes? And at what strength?
All the stuff I've read about revegging is just too DAMN VAGUE ...."leave some popcorn buds?" well how many? I don't have a clue. Greg greens book told me to cut all the buds away from the branches one by one and THEN when all the buds are off to "triim the plant back as needed" WHAT THE HELL IS AS NEEDED? Do I REALLY have to do that??? Cuts these buds off the one by one?
Sorry but as you can see im losing it here. I'm REALLY starting to understand where all the noobs are coming from.......searching hasn't really helped me one single bit....only made things more confusing.....WAHHHHHHH :(
Thanks again EVERYONE for your help. :)

You donā??t have to leave any buds, but I highly recommend leaving at least 8 or 10 popcorn buds. I donā??t know what the experts have to say about this, but I have noticed that the new growth always seems to start immerging from these buds. Sometimes buds are all thatā??s left. You want to try and leave a bunch of nice big healthy leaves on the plant, but depending on the strain and the conditions this might not be possible. During flowering, especially toward the end, the plants eat their leaves so they can supply as much nutrition as possible to bud and resin production. By half, I mean I usually cut all the buds off the top half of my 3ā?? plant, and use the bottom 18ā? for revegging foliage.
Are "good leaves" the younger sun leaves?
No, good leaves in this case are any healthy ones. The more the better within reason. I usually end up with 12 or 15, but unfortunately they often yellow and die before the new growth really gets going good.
And if you had your plant on say 1200 ppm would you flush it first and then re-introduce grow nutes? And at what strength?
The problem with flushing plants that will be revegged, is the whole ā??eating itselfā? thing, like I mentioned above. Iā??m afraid flushing would worsen the situation since there are no nutrients for the plant to eat. Flushing makes leaves yellow and die faster, and you need leaves so your plant can reveg properly. Iā??m guessing that you should probably start by mixing veg and bud nutes, rather than just switching all at once. You should do this when going from veg to bud, so why not the other way around as well? I have never tried this, but it seems like it could help. Maybe I will try this next time, Iā??ve always just switched. When I switch I lower nute strength to about 1/3 for the first watering. The plant will have less leaves than normal so be careful not to over water or over feed. It will need less of each.
ā?¦triim the plant back as needed" WHAT THE HELL IS AS NEEDED? Do I REALLY have to do that??? Cuts these buds off the one by one?
Just harvest the top portion of the plant as normal, and leave the bottom 18ā? or so of foliage to deal with the reveg requirements. Leave some popcorn buds and leaves as mentioned above.
Sorry but as you can see im losing it here.
Please donā??t. Itā??s not really that big of a deal. You have knowledge of plants, just use your common sense. You know what plants do when you do different things to them. Use your best judgment with what Iā??ve given you as a jumping off point, and Iā??m sure you can get your plant growing again after flowering.
ā?¦searching hasn't really helped me one single bit....only made things more confusingā?¦
Donā??t tell, but sometimes I resort to searching outside this forum. Have you thought about Botany sites or other weed forums?
Hope that helps a little instead of causing more confusion. Iā??m no expert but Iā??ll help more if I can. Probably not much more tonight though.

Oh thank god....I can't believe all this super info....!! Seriously....I can picture in my mind exactly how to do this now and can't thank you enough for breaking it down into parts I can understand .
I posted the same question over at IC MAg as well but pretty much got the same answers and really....at least here I know who knows whats going on you know and who's word I can trust.....which makes things a MILLION times easier.
Thanks again.....you've made my day.

Rock.....seriously....I was going to flip. Part of my issue is the time thing....this plant is actually starting to THROW buds at me. They are starting to DROP OFF THE PLANT as in ...hello....we are done.....HELLO?? The bottom part has a bit to go go but the top is already 20% amber and I need to make a decision on what to do but of COURSE I'm capable of being a babbling idiot and am surprised you ever doubted it. :D
My final decision is to reveg the plant. I just heard too many scary things about "finished" plants not having a good success rate (it was actually kind of Stinky saying...."i've never seen one make it") In my world that means......get the shovel out
and so that just didin't sound hopeful you know?
I have a new 400wMH light coming which I plan to use on the seedlings to see if I can improve their growing....these cfls just don't seem to have what it take imo BUT my wonderful hubby built me a super neato lightstand for the cfls just last night and that is what I will be using to reveg the other plant with. I got rid of the couch and the televison and now have room for the plant. :wtf: Then, once the beast revegges, I'll take clones from that and see if I can make it work.
I must again say thank you to eveyone who offered advice and/or support....but very special props to Opie and MVP who both expended a LOT of energy to assist me.
Special hugs for you two. :)......and ok.....I'll share a bowl with you guys. :joint1:

Hey WH, glad to help ya out. I'm also really happy that Opie stopped by and shared thoughts on both cloning and revegging. I'm gonna have to keep an eye out for updates on the revegging. Do you think a new thread on the subject would help the CannComm community in general? Not trying to make more work for you, just a thought.
On a separate note, I am now considering a little experiment with the MKs I have that are about 40 days into flowering. Maybe I'll start a thread on cloning during the mid/late stage of flowering. The MKs were a dream to clone the last 2 times so I reckon they will be a good subject for experiment. What do you think?
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!! I am thankful for my canncom friends :hippy: :rastasmoke: :pimp:, Cannabis - the plant, and MMJ Laws. Cheers All!

Flowering 2 Master Kush
MVP that is a very good idea.....I will see if I can get some photos because people like me don't read well LOL and I think it would help.
I've also spoken to Rhizome and he has given me a few tips to follow as well. I won't be able to get a super accurate reading of how many ozs there are but it will be close enough to give me an idea...and I'm happy not to be rid of this plant.....it's startng to feel like a pet or something. :D Guess I'll have to think up an actual name now.
MVP....SEVERAL people over at IC mag chipped in to tell me that they made clones as late as 5-6 weeks into flowering with good results so I'd go for it if I were you. I think you have a good hand with clones anyway. HOWEVER when I mentioned the plant was at HARVEST stage all I got was alot of mumbling and shoe-shuffling etc....and statements like..."well its possible in theory" and such. That just didn't sound up my alley. ;)

Flowering 2 Master Kush
This is what I cut off....again....before and after. Looking at the hanging stuff I'm guessing 3-4 oz hanging. The buds I trimmed from the bottom came up to 2.9 oz.....(weighed wet and trimmed then calculate 25% of wet weight)
PS....thats 2.9 oz WITHOUT any stems....;)
-
Flowering 2 Master Kush
Well Zeb I hear you on that but she was destined for the trash can anyway. This way I can see IF she revegges I can get some clones off her. I'm estimating but I'm pretty sure she's going to come in about 7 oz which would be the second largest amount I've gotten off a plant (Crystal Limit...8.5 oz is the champ) AND she finished (20% amber) in 57 days.
-
Flowering 2 Master Kush
Well i know that she was destined for that, but for me it always was and will be a sad thing
to cut down the plants... for me my plants are like good friends , or like a pet...and to kill em....well its sad...
but thank God the end result is mostly good:jointsmile:
Btw....very nice work Weedhound:thumbsup:...very nice work...

Flowering 2 Master Kush
Hey Weedhound, good job. Nice looking harvest there.
Now that wasn't so bad was it? Nothing to get too worked up about. It looks like a nice healthy plant with plenty of leaves and buds left. I'm betting that if you take care of her she should come around nicely. I've revegged plants with less on them than that. It almost looks like you knew what you were doing, wink wink, nudge nudge.

Thanks Opie....with all your great info I felt MUCH more confident approaching the task but it's very good to hear that you approve of the job I did. :)

Flowering 2 Master Kush
My plant is LEAKING. What is THAT about? And not only is it leaking its seems it has already started to cause some sort of mold or fungus. Here are two pics....I cut that section this morning cause it SURE DONT LOOK RIGHT TO ME. The second photo is what ALL the main stems are doing......leaking. They've been doing this all night and I can't get it to stop....the plant is WET in several places.
I dabbed all the tips with Serenade as there are other spots DEFINITELY starting to look suspiciously bad. That didn't seem to take very long to me. :(
I have put a fan on her despite the 66 degree temp in our house and am wondering if I should spray her thoroughly with Serenade.
I actually considered this last night as a preventative measure but rejected the idea specifically BECAUSE the plant was LEAKING (I still don't understand that part) and figured it would dry up overnite and then I'd Serenade at that point because the stuff would just wash off with the plant being wet the way it is.
Any help or thoughts would be appreciated. I most likely WILL spray the plant down and DID consider trimming everything back (like the one I cut this morning) but there are two problems with that imo.....there are several spots that are too far down the stem to cut safely AND I'm afraid cutting things back will just start a whole NEW round of leaking.
I can't quarantine her so that concerns me as well. If there is a chance this could get all over my house then I'm afraid Kushette is treading a VERY fine line here.
HELP!!!
Thanks. :)

Here's the same pic auto-adjusted by the computer (sorry I should have done that to begin with) ;)
One thought......these are the plants that were flowering along with the white rhinos. I cleaned my clippers thoroughly between then and now but that AND the thought that they all hung out together makes me wonder..... I see absolutely NO sign of mold on the buds or anything else I harvested off that plant. Just thinking......

I don't know what Serenade is so I cannot comment intelligently. However sometimes a plant will transpire when cut like this... ever seen an Evergreen tree with pruned branches? They weep for a while and then heal up on their own. I would watch closely (as you are) and resist the urge to just chuck her out the window on a whim. Be prepared to react if it gets progressively worse, but monitor, compare, wait patiently, do it all over again.
It reminds me of last night when my sister called in a panic. Her dog Mabel was hit by a car and my sister was crying, emotionally distraught, and needed emotional support. She was at the doggy ER and there was internal bleeding, not sure whether to operate and they said it was 50/50 survival if they operate... we (Mom and I) told sis to ask a lot of questions, assess her skeletal and neurological functions with the vet, and then call us back.
Well, Mabel (sweet lil Rott mix) had no broken bones or fractures and brain functions were normal. Sis decided to wait and see how she made it through the night. Today we heard back that they chose not to do surgery or anything and her bleeding appeared to stop (so far) and it seems what was needed was time to stabilize and make a rational decision. Mabel will stay over today for observation but she is a lively, strong 10 month old and that is helping her heal.
So, long story short, perhaps Kushette is also a strong lively soul that needs a bit of time to stabilize.
I cannot speak from experience revegging but the plant just went thru a great trauma and may be exhibiting a short lived effect. It also seems that if it were mold or fungi that it showed extremely quickly, but again, I am not an expert on this either.
At any rate Weedhound you have a green thumb and care a lot for Kushette, so watch her closely, monitor changes and be prepared to remove her if things get out of control. But know that living things that are strong can often heal themselves at that may be happening...
Just a though, I am not experienced in revegging. I am just applying reason to the situation.

MVP I greatly appreciate your thoughts here. (PS....most common hbc (hit by car) bleeding injury to a dog is torn spleen....internal bleeding is extremely common in hbcs. I remember one dog that needed it's spleen taken out and 2 transfusions to replace lost blood.....transfusions that my shepherds volunteered to donate.. :D (the dog did well.....)
Sorry I digress....About 50% of my cuts are starting to get that black look to the edges.....you don't see necrosis move this fast in mammals....I'm kind of impressed.
At any rate I AM quickly losing hope here.....I've put a space heater blowing gentle warm air on her and sprayed her completely with Serenade (anti-fungal MVP...copper based) but based on what I've seen so far she seems to be sinking fairly fast where the stems are concerned....and still leaking away with no sign of stopping or the plant drying up with the drips all over it. The rest of her looks fine but.....
I will keep everyone updated. Thanks for stopping by and giving me a little cheer there MVP.....hope Mabel ends up ok. ;)
Ps...We animal emergency places are EXPENSIVE aren't we??? :wtf:

Flowering 2 Master Kush
Weedhound, Sometimes I have to cut into hollow stems to trim my mother plants. When that happens, I squeeze the end of the stem as flat as I can with my fingers, then put one of those real strong black paper clips on the end of the stem. So far, that's worked and I haven't any problems.

Flowering 2 Master Kush
Hi PC,
Thanks for stopping by. You have seen this before eh? Quite franky i'm kind of amazed that a) it happened in almost no time at all....things turning black.....and b) this is something I had NO clue would happen much LESS be the one issue that damages the plant so severely as all other parts of the plant seem just fine. (Quite frankly.....I honestly could never HAVE imagined these stems running water like garden hoses so not sure how I could have prepared for that at all anyway.)
The little space heater seems to have helped dry up the smaller stems but the larger ones are still dripping away with no sign of stopping. Right now I've got small bits of paper towels with some Serenade on them to sop up the mess. I may go to paper clips for some but one or two big stem ends simply cannot be paper clipped....or cut back with cauging too much damage. I'm already feel overwhelmed here (In less that 1 day  ) so am just not sure how far I want to carry this. Its' also in the same room as my seedlings so should I be worried about that as well?
Thanks for any advice, wisdom etc...PC.
