2,500 lbs of Marijuana seized
The news reported that it was an abandoned house they were using. One of the people from the neighborhood watch noticed people coming and going from the building and called the police. So there seems to be no issue with the police entering a private residence.

There are many tactics to get an officer permission to enter one's house. This one is classic....
The 911 call goes out from a woman on a cell phone parked outside the house (to verify her proximity to the house). She tells the police that she's being held hostage in the house by a rapist and gives the address and is suddenly cut off as she screams. The police show up and search the house. Because there is enough evidence of a person receiving harm if the police do not act, they WILL/MUST search the house.
Since this was a "burglary" call, I have to assume a neighbor made the call (perhaps seeing someone going after some free bud) and nobody was at the residence when the police arrived, then that neighbor becomes the necessary tool to get the police to enter the home.
2500 lbs of dried cured weed (unless skunk), doesn't produce near the odor a fresh grow room produces with just a few plants. I seriously doubt the police got a whiff of it.
I wonder how many cops looked like stuffed scarecrow after hauling the weed off.:stoned:

That makes more sense then.
If the house was abandoned and they recieved a suspicious activity report that should be enough to allow them to enter the building legally.
It's no different than lets say......
Your neighboor reporting a robbery at your home while you are not home. Obviously LEO must enter the home to see what's going on. If they see/smell anything while this is going on you can certainly get introuble.
But the police can't make something up just to enter a home. That's ILLEGAL and will cause instant dissmissal of any charges brought to in a court of law.
Why do you think some people who comit horrid crimes get their cases thrown out of court? Because LEO did something illegal.
A good lawyer would make the prosecutor/LEO prove the report was legit.
Make the dispatcher appear in court and take a look at the report logs to make sure things add up.
It wouldn't be hard to prove whether a legit call of concern was reported or not that led up to the search and siezure of illegal items in your home.

i was at a rally race with some cops from philly. they were actually pretty cool, they were even narcotics cops. they were telling us that weed wasnt shit to them, they would much rather have people smoking indo than doing the harder stuff.
