When you eat in a resturant.
It's kind of crazy listening to some of these answers like "Why should I Tip" or "I don't feel the need to tip"...I'm feeling that this is rediculous. I always had the impression that everyone gives atleast 15% like you should, but people here are talking about a couple dollars or 5%...ARE YOU KIDDING ME. I don't know any other way of saying this except that is FUCKED UP. They are busting their ass for you waiting on you hand and foot for like 3 dollars around here and you can't fucking tip them...no wonder waiters/waitresses are often mad at the end of the night..you jackasses don't tip them...

i disagree
i used to deliver pizza and and time i got under 2 bucks as a tip i would be pissed. people rely on those tips as a part of there income. not tipping them is not paying for your full price for there service. IF YOU CAN'T PAY FOR IT DON'T EVEN GO IN JUST GET TAKE OUT.

If you can't leave a tip for good service then stay home and cook for yourself. Now there's a new idea HUH!:) Also tip the person that delivers your pizza $5,they gotta buy gas for their ride also.

I can't remember the last time I went to a resturant... I think it was when I was married 15 years ago... I do a lot of take out and called domino's a few times,,, I gave the pizza dude a fiver and a joint,I knew he smoked,,,lol I said wait and came back with a bone and he tried to give me the five back...
tip bowls I usually put a deuce in it or the change from the order...

If you are an office worker sitting on your fat ass all day getting overpaid, then maybe you should feel obligated to tip. But I don't sit on my ass all day.
Does your job require you to wait on someone hand on foot? It is a rather degrading job, a lot like stripping in my opinion. As a server you have to sell yourself to your client like no other job, and wait on them hand and foot. Plus your server is making 2.15. That is why you should tip.
Not to mention we remember people. If you don't tip me and than I see you again, you will be getting the worst service ever.

i almost always tip around 20%. i realize that sometimes shit happens. the only way i don't tip as much as if my pop is empty and i see the waiter standing around talking. i hate being without something to drink when i eat.

I agre with you bashing CityBoyGoneCountry, but I hardly think waiting is degradeable, any respectable person earning an honest living deserves more merit than that...

Being a food server and having to deal with customer service is pretty much just taking it up the ass all day with a fucking smile on your face.
I been doin' customer service for 5 years, and trust me, I am DAMN good at taking it up the ass with a fuckin mile wide GRIN.
DAMN me and my squeaky customer service voice.
"HEY THERE, HOW ARE YA DOING TODAY? WHAT CAN I DO FOR YA? JUST LET ME KNOW IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS! OR IF YOU ARE READY!"
Fuck...no wonder they made me shift manager.
TRUST ME, from PERSONAL EXPERIENCE...taking it up the ass all day SUCKS..and those tips are what make it WORTH IT.
So for you people that don't tip, PLEASE GET A CUSTOMER SERVICE JOB..and then give me your goddamned opinion.

I actually loved my job, I just didn't like a lot of the customers.
I worked in an organic/natural deli that catered to people with special diets and dietary restrictions.
I basically got to deal with hippies/yuppies/picky ass people..
I was a great job, but seriously...the customers could be the worst.

a lot of people think "I am paying for it",,,but they don't look at the human side of things... wait people are people who work for the establishment and if a customer raggs on the wait person they are just ignorant...

When you eat in a resturant.
If you can't/won't leave a solid tip, go to a restaurant that has counter service... one of those "number twelve your clams are ready" places.
Waitstaff make crap base pay. The counter places usually pay more-you can still tip the register person anyway...
Otherwise, take care of your waitstaff!!!! They bust ass and lots of the time if you think the service is slow, it's the kitchen's fault.
I know, I've worked all ends of it- waitress, bar, line cook, prep, dish, bus, catering....and I'll tell you the cooks will RIDE the waitresses if the food sits there waiting to be picked up!

Man cooks can be such assholes. I worked at a restaurant where every meal came with a fucking appetizer...and I would be the one to make and serve that...and then the fucking cook would finish it in like 2 seconds and yell at me for not bringing it out there..and id be like DUUUUDEE they just got there fucking appetizer. Man he was such an ass and SO crappy at timing things right.
So lame. Don't even bring me back to that horrible place of employment.

I had the same problem with one of the saute cooks at a place I did the app line. He was such a prick, and thought it was funny when I'd get an order for some crazy antipasto with like one of everything on the line arranged just so... and he'd throw together the pasta dish and try to have it up at the same time as the app, just to mess with me. His sorry ass got fired though for just basically being a know-it-all jerk, lol.
Oh and he called himself "Turbo". Durrrr.

As for tipping less if the service is bad, I understand. But you have to think about if it is the servers fault or the kitchens. It also pisses me off when someone gets free shit from you for what ever reason and don't show anything for it with the tip. I have given customers free meals before and they still leave a fucking dollar.
Watch "waiting"
Great movie.
Oh and I posted this because I saw a shit load of doallar tips and all change tips tonight at work. It pisses me off when it is a coworker I like too. I would say that is about 75%, I like most people.
Being a server is bad, because if everything goes great u take all the credit... but if everything goes wrong(ur fault or not) you take all the blame.
-
When you eat in a resturant.
i think a tip should be based strictly on service, and i definately think if you cant afford to tip you shouldnt be eating out or calling for delivery..that is a huge pet peeve of mine, when someone is too cheap to tip the delivery guy..i mean, you are too lazy to do it (cook or get your own food), and if it was your friend it would be "you fly ill buy"..idk...just me....oh, and if the service sucks, i leave a penny on the table...oh well...now you know all my dirty little secrets..lol

I have worked as a cahier before and the company paid my wages, not the customers. You stand there and take money and give change. A server is juggling multible table and trying to keep all his/her different customers with different needs happy. Plus there are a lot more things that can go wrong in a resturant which all gets blamed on the server. Yes I took abuse as a cashier, but nothing can compare to an asshole customer in a resturant. Working in retail is a lot easier and the company pay's you a base of at least minimum wage. Plus it is half the work, you aren't running all over the place with trays all day.

Delay putting it into the computer. Yeah, when you know the kitchen will fuck up the timing, you sometimes just have to put every thing in at different times. At least the appetizers and than the entree's.

I got [sort of] fired from one restaurant for totally bitching out a customer.
It's actually kind of a funny story... he was a regular, came in every day for lunch, and every day he complained and I ended up spending more time with this one asswipe than all my other tables and bar seats combined!
The other regulars knew it too... and when I finally finished telling him off, a few people actually started clapping!
And the manager even told me that I could come back but I had to work in a different part of the restaurant for a while, lol.

Yes... that would be running into the walk-in cooler to either cry or punch boxes of lettuce, depending on the situation.

Have you worked in either field before? If not than you are basing everything you are saying on this one observation. I have worked both jobs, and can tell you that serving is much more stressful than ringing up milk. I got hell behind the register sometimes, but nothing can compare to people in resturants that seem to know how to make you feel like complete shit. There isn't any good positon in a resturant. It is prob the most stressful job you can have. Kitchen, dish, waiting, it is all a chaotic mess, unless you work in a small little hole in the wall place. If it is such a cake walk, why do those who have served tip so well? Nearly everyone I know who has waited tables tips 5 bucks minimum. Usually if it is a cheap ticket I will tip about 50%. In my opinion if the service is good the server shouldn't get less than 5 bucks even if the ticket is 4 bucks.
If you havn't worked in this industry than you don't know what it is like. Yes there are worse jobs out there, but those don't require money from customers to make ends meet. And why do people work in resturants? Because there is a lot of money to be made if you are good and work in a good resturant. But that shouldn't excuse people from skimping on a tip. Plus some of the best smoking buddies you will meet work in a resturant. It is the job of weed smokers and other drug users. No drug tests unless you hurt yourself on the job.

Yeah seriously, my biggest pet peeve is seeing someone at a diner who sits there milking their free coffee refills for 2 hours and leaves a few coins because the bill was only $3, but the waitress was over there every 15 minutes going, "Wahmah, hun?" BOOO!!!!

At my old job, I did both......

When you eat in a resturant.
I tip atleast 15 dollars. I don't care about percentages, because my meal is usually always under 20 dollars but we travel with a large crew sometimes so we all throw in our left over cash, which adds up fast.
-
When you eat in a resturant.
I have waited tables and always recieved good tips, the simple reason is that I always take my work seriously and like to be the best no matter what I'm doing.
Bad waiters get bugger all and the tip is totaly dependent on the service, if the food is crap then I will ask to see the chef and he will be told exactly what I think, but if everything from the waiter was sound then he/she will get what they deserve.
I guess the English must be a little more polite since I really enjoyed my time waiting tables .. :D

Americans are greedy assholes. I have gotten some really good tips, but have also gotten screwed over a lot. Now I know when I really fucked up at a table and my tip might suffer. I understand that. Sometimes I'll just have a really bad day where I can't seem to get anything right. I went back to the dish room because I was tired of dealing with customers. To many assholes.
Not to mention drunk men with an attractive female server. That shit pisses me off. Treat your server with respect. Not saying anyone here does that but I have seen it many times.
