Who gives a shit about top 40. I don't listen to the radio nor care about what is popular. I only care about what sounds good. Jay-z is pretty "commercial" and plays the top 40, and last time I checked, the guy has some talent.

You're getting me all wrong dude... I'm not discrediting those with talent, what I am discrediting is many of the artists that get the hype and sales because they're pushed down our throats, and told it's good. many of that is what makes up the Top 40's, and while you may not care about the top 40. Unfortunately many people don't make the efforts to look beyond what's topping the charts (it's true for any genre you cant deny that), which is NOT saying that there aren't some who deserve it. I just feel many rappers out there (IMO Lil Wayne included)... do not deserve all the credit and hype they get, cause many of the underground rappers could out rhyme them any day.
I'm also willing to accept that what you and I consider "talented" in an MC might be very different standards, and personal preference. But I still stand by my opinion cause being a recording and sound engineer I feel strongly about that kinda thing. Feel me?
i gotta say i like me some jayz and eminem from time to time...and i also like a lot of underground rap...honestly i listen to more hevy metal and older metal than anything...but good music is good music...just because someone makes more or less money doin it doesnt change the way it sounds... if its good i listen to it..
I feel you. Its an opinion. And I am also in the sound biz as well so I do have much credit although just by being a musician or sound engineer alone does not give warrant past opinions. I believe Rick Rubin has quoted being not a musician nor does he know much if not hardly anything when it comes to music. He just knows what people want and what sounds good to him. (Spin Magazine) When you don't like an artist, you tend not to listen to them and all they have to offer. Lil wayne holds a different sound and seems to be more polished, maybe due to the fact that he can afford a better producer. I believe that Lil Wayne can outshine those artist on any given sunday so to speak, but I also think the like can do just as good. He has had a rather large following and was considered by many, even before he had a platinum selling album, to be a great rapper. Beyond being great, ie the best, that can only follow opinion, and to me, you have just cited that with no real evidence beyond saying that he is commercial. If you could convince me on style, lyrical play, and the like then I might agree.
It is the goal of any artist to be successful, maybe not with monetary means, but in the fact that they would like to be heard by people.
