I don't mind old music, but I think current American music sucks ass. It's all about image and not about real talent. I won't mention names of course. The music in America is all corporate sell out music.
I am more into heavy rock/metal so I tend to listen to more bands coming out of Europe, primarily Scandinavia.

I must step in and disagree completely with this point of view.
Decade of origin has nothing to do with talent.
I find infinitely more meaning and talent in One Giant Leap, or KRS1 (now) than there ever was in ZZ Top or Sony and Cher ('60's-'70's).

i think its pathetic that all of you are
saying that music today has to meaning.
if you really think there is no good music
being produced today, then you need to
open your fucking ears.

LOL...all I will say is for the LOVE of god...it's JERRY Garcia not "Jarry"...come on man he's probably rolling around in his grave....clearly you're a HUGE dead fan
And as for today's music...my god, there's SO much going around that is truly amazing. Honestly, if you think otherwise you're watching too much mtv. You just have to know where to look, lol, so put down that overplayed Floyd and get into something new and not so depressing.

Im a huge 70's music fan too. Bands like The Doors, zeppelin, floyd, jefferson airplane are half of my music collection. The other half is bands like TOOL, godsmack, smashing pumpkins, stuff like that.

I think the pathetic thing is that the industry is such that "product" is what's wanted...really moving work tends to be somewhat disturbing, even difficult to digest at times, which makes it less marketable...all anyone really wants anymore is a beat to dance to as you attempt to get laid...not that there's anything wrong with that.
As a 35 y.o. (obv, not young...) seeing what happened w/ grunge was an education. A real, fresh, meaningful music came along and--surprise--sold. What did the industry do? Basically find bands that can do the posturing and ape the pioneers without covering any new ground. I quickly realized that, for every "visionary" band that makes it big, there's at least a dozen that fail to make it (costing a record label $$$). However, any blatant rip-off act will probably get at least modest success as long as the "craze" is going. Long story short, a studio can make much more money trying to find the "next Monkees" than the "next Beatles."
Here's something I can't understand, though. I think Susan Tedeschi's first album came out about the same time Britney became popular. Now, Britney probably has the swimsuit competition locked up, but not only is blues (and blues-based rock'n'roll) a blatantly sexual medium, Susan T has FAR more sexual a voice. WHY would any 15 y.o. male want to listen to a putative virgin tell how she's "not that innocent" versus a sultry woman say that she's "gonna show you how to rock me right"?

Those of us who love good 60's and 70's music sometimes forget that for every Hendrix, there were a dozen Captain and Tennille's
