i've used 5htp for months at a time as an alternative to prescription anti-depressants. it does work. at least i feel happier and more motivated when i take it. i feel like it stops working as well as it does in the beginning after about two or three months though. then again perhaps it's in my head.
I used it for several months about 6 years ago and had that same experience, Yankeesgirl--it didn't seem to be as effective after several months as it did in the beginning. That caused me to wonder whether, in me, the initial mood boost might have simply been a placebo effect.
I have a new neurologist I'm about to see about some problems I'm having, several of which are making me feel lower than I normally do, and I'm going to ask him what he thinks about 5-HTP. I also want to know if it interacts with other meds in any way.
Probably be a good idea to move this to Medical now I guess...might have more of any effect there.
until yankee and bird's post i was about to get some.... but the last thing i need is an anti depressant that works ok for a few months and then sends me crashing and burning back down to where i was before hand...
getting off an anti-depressant when it even slightly worked is like 10x worse then never of having it to begin with.... cuz there you are 'normal' and all of a sudden you take a huge plunge back down into that depressing darkness.... but instead of already benig used to it since you've managed to escape awhile, you slam back into it like a space ship slamming into the atmosphere.... it's a severely horrible ride and all you can do is hope you make it out of it.
To be honest, I have a hard time remembering anything. I don't even know what I did yesterday.
Granted,,,looks like this def belongs here now...Quote:

would this help you in the middle of a panic atack?
I'd agree with Mac. They probably just got used to it and didn't even notice it after a while.
