It's when people throw up their hands and tell the black community to "get over it" that they get pissed off. A lot of these people simply want recognition for what their families went through.
You say that you doubt "they" had ancestors from back then but where do you think they came from, a stork? I have bookkeeping records from a small plantation that my family owned forever ago. I'm not sure the year, I'd have to go pull them out. In these documents there are records of slaves, their family ties, where they came from, who they bought them from, and how much they cost. It's a fascinating piece of history but when I think about my family name being attached to something like that I am horrified. No, it's not my fault this many years later but I feel it is my duty to learn from the mistakes of my ancestors.
Congress just THIS YEAR apologized for allowing the lynch-mob mentality to fester during the years surrounding the civil war. Countless black men, women, and children were murdered out in the open and the government actively looked the other way. Not a very respectable past. Both people need to allow themselves to have frank, honest discussions about modern-day racism. It's the only way it will finally be squashed.
