View Full Version : British 'lad' culture

I tell you man, one thing that pisses me off about this country is this whole lad culture bullshit. It's a totally alien thing to me and I can only think of 'laddism' from an 'us and them' point of view.

To clarify for those not in the UK, laddism is the term coined for the FHM generation of 20 something males. The idea put forth by most tabloid newspapers and mens magazines such as Loaded, FHM, Zoo and Maxim is that if your a young male in Britain, you almost definitely:

1. Go out on the pull every night (having a meaningful, wholesome relationship is a serious nono)
2. Go to the pub and get fucked until you can't stand at least 3 times a week
3. Have an obssession with football, because football is actually the greatest thing in the history of the world, ever.
4. Want, no, NEED to buy every pointlessly overhyped, expensive iGadget that is coming out every two weeks.
5. Think Dirty Sanchez is 'genius'

It's this kinda collective generalisation that every 20 something male in Britain is thick as shit and has values as deep as a paddling pool in the Sahara. Let's just make one thing clear. I'm 20 and...

1. I have a girlfriend of two and a half years and have never "pulled".
2. I've only ever gotten truly, immensely drunk once when I was 15
3. I can't stand football
4. I bought an Ipod. It broke before it's birthday. That is reason enough for me to ignore 'gadgets' for the rest of my life.
5. No

So if i'm not a 'lad', then what exactly the fuck am I? Only in Britain can we celebrate mindless drunk culture to the point of extreme generalisations.

Any other Brits in the hisoos know what i'm talking about?

1. i dont go on the pull every night (just sometimes at weekends)
2. I go to the pub a couple of times a week (usualy just drink beer)
3. I do like football (c'mon the gers)
4. i dont need to buy the latest gadget (if my phone or something is broke ill buy a new one)
5. i dont think dirty sanchez is genius (i think its hilarious but not genius)

and you and your girlfriend ..... i mean you say you havent ''pulled'' in 2 and a 1/2 years, is that your choice or is she holding out on you haha :D jk jk

I understand what you're saying.

It was the same with the "hoodie" B.S. Just because my jackets got a hood dont mean i'm gonna shoot/stab/or rob anyone. Never have never will and my sense of fashion aint gonna change that.

Funny how I immediately sound boring because I don't conform to the special rules of being male.

I enjoy a good toke as opposed to a drink. Not that I don't like to drink, it's just expensive and half the time not that much fun unless your with the right people. Me and my mates like to sit in with the drink unless there are special offers on at our local.

Perhaps i'd be less boring if I liked football instead of badminton. Not that there's any logical way of explaining this, it's just the socially accepted theory in a country that barely knows its arse from its elbow. My question is, if a large majority of the young male population don't actually fit into these neat guidelines then what does that suggest? We are boring? We arn't fun? Way to be a social nazi.

Lol, sorry mate, didn't mean to get up in your face. Yeah, i'm a cheap ass student so gots to save the pennies. :D

It gets me down because it makes me feel alien, and i'm not the only once. I know a whole network of un-lads. Our thing isn't birds and beers, it's beats and blunts. We don't drink and get shallow, we toke and get deep. We enjoy a good circle of kickups but i'll never watch a football match with eager fascination. And for the last fucking time... JORDAN IS NOT ATTRACTIVE!

Nah, i'm not here to label anyone a lad like it's necessarily a bad thing. It's the principle of the matter. In my opinion, lad culture is almost a celebration of our countries worst characteristics. Unsafe sex, drunken violence, hooliganism. What else is being a 'lad' about, nahsayin'?

Apologies if I sounded like a bellend . Smoke some  !

Preps get pissed and get their asses beat where I come from, we use prep to identify any abercrombie, hollister, AE wearing mother fucker who wouldn't know a blunt from a dog turd, has the alcohol tolerance of a 2 year old, and thinks he is the next justin timberfake.

1. Go out on the pull every night (having a meaningful, wholesome relationship is a serious nono) - I'm on the lookout for tail all the time, not just at night, but I am not in or opposed to having a meaningful relationship if one jumped up and bit me in the ass.
2. Go to the pub and get fucked until you can't stand at least 3 times a week - atleast three times a week, I leave under my own power though, nobody needs to babysit me even though I may not remember the next day.
3. Have an obssession with football, because football is actually the greatest thing in the history of the world, ever. Maybe not ever, but it is top 5, and I am talking about real football where you are SUPPOSED to hit the other team as hard as you can.
4. Want, no, NEED to buy every pointlessly overhyped, expensive iGadget that is coming out every two weeks. This one doesn't apply to me
5. Think Dirty Sanchez is 'genius'. I think Dirty Sanchez is a lame sub-par Jackass rip off, Jackass on the other hand is fucking tear jerking it's so funny, but not genius. It's basically the same shit we used to do when we were young and didn't "party"

If you're not a lad, what are you? You are who you are, regardless of media labels and majorities of people conforming to a certain fashion or taste, etc. You don't seem boring to me, infact rather intelligent, it would be cool to have a toke with you.

Safe my friends.

I hate to come across as someone who bitches about shit for no reason. Ain't no harm in being a thick lad, only as one user pointed out, we're the future. We're gonna be running shit in 10-20 years time. I don't see any sense in celebrating being a twat, not on such a scale as British ladism.

You know there's a double page column in Zoo magazine called 'Bed the zoo virgin'? A virgin sends in a naked photo of herself and 'studs' have to describe why they should be the one to bust her cherry. I don't want to seem old fashioned or anything, but that is the ultimate, dictionary definition of fucked in the head. :rasta:

I agree with the football obsession,
FHM is, was and always will be for 12 yearolds who were too scared to buy real porn. We were all there.

But I don't get your issue with going out "on the pull".

PS: If your i-pod broke that early u shud be able to get it repaired under waranty, apple fixed my shuffle I bought of ebay when it was 1 month out of warranty.

Putting my penis in a different girl every night isn't for me. Sorry.

Also, that's what I thought. Wait until you even try to get your Pod fixed. I had to make an appointment to go to the apple store in london, then make an appointment to go back and have it fixed which would apparently take 3 weeks. Make another appointment to pick it up, that is if they can fix it, if they can't, fuck you. I had to say fuck you right back.

B Bash mate, it's just that 80% of the population are are thick as shit. I could pretend to be grown up and understanding in this issue, with some sort of 'each to his own' comment, but fuck it. It's because people are thick.

That said, i loved going out and geting pissed with my mates when i turned 18, chasing the girls and getting a little messy. However I've never felt 'part' of that culture. I fucking hate football too.

Is 'lad' British for 'prep'?

no, preppies are [a cliche, i know] rich or well off high school slimballs obsessed with career. lads are typically infatuated by the 'being male and acting like a gorilla' bullshit and are obsessed with bullshit. lads are more in line with jocks [not the scots].

I hate the way folks assume you've gotta like football just because you're a guy. And when you say you don't really follow football you get the funniest looks and guys are like wtf!? As for the ladies, they love it. Hey shoot me i'd rather spend a sunday afternoon toking a few fatties with the missus, maybe a few pre lunch pints at the local and a huge sunday roast followed by a walk to burn of those yorkshire puddings! Fucking right, my kinda sunday afternoon!

Peace

dirty sanchez is like a more painful version of Jackass.....

and i agree that its funny... oops sorry does that make me a "lad" just cuz i like a tv show... bullshit, your the one generalizing people here.... i mean jesus... i got lots of different types of friends, yeah some would be considered lads... but you (the thread maker) are way off with YOUR generalizations...

for instance, i like to go out for the weekend with my friends occasionaly, and yes i like to get shitfaced while i do it,suppose this makes me a lad? oh wait, my mobile phone is like 5 years old and i like baggy loose clothing so i cant be a lad??

one of my mates is really into football, he must be a lad.... wait a sec, he doesnt drink, AT ALL! so he cant be a lad...

another of my mates likes football, has the latest mobile phones all the time, likes to go out every weekend (when he is at home, he works on a fishing boat) so yeah he must be a lad.... oh shit wait, he's been in a relationship for about 2-3 years now so he cant be a lad.....

and we all like dirty sanchez cus it's a funny show, and all prefer a smoke to a drink despite liking goin out and having fun...... so dude, seriously you need to pull your head out your ass and stop generalizing people, try gettin to know someone before labelling them, twat.

My girl bought it for me. It's partly the reason I made the thread. :D

And Wesley Pipes. The point of the thread is that the generalisation you speak of is made by the magazines I mentioned. It's a mass generalisation of what a cool lad should be, therefore it is accepted socially which I think is complete bullshit. Sorry for calling the not-so-stereotype of a lad a thickhead, but to be honest with ya, the majority of them I meet are. I went travelling around the world last year and the only twats I met happened to be British 'lads' in New Zealand. It was around the time the world cup was on (or perhaps the euro, I dunno) which hilariously took center stage in their lives. Meanwhile, the rest of us were climbing glaciers and taking tours down Milford Sound :D .

Anyway, the point is, relax, i'm not making a negative mass generalisation. I'm merely pointing out the one made by our countries so called men's mags, which celebrate something I deem to be rather immature and irresponsible. Doesn't spread a good image does it? Personally i'm happy to get along with anyone that won't generalise me first, but funnily enough a lot do, such is the curse of lad culture.

Cheers.

by that post it sounds like you think you are in some way superiour to those types of guys who like football and drinking?...... now i personally can't stand football myself, the only time i would ever watch it would be when Scotland make the world cup final (so thats never) but just because someone is passionate about something you automatically stereotype them. Does that mean you think i'm a childish geek cuz i'm passionate about comics? (I have often been called that.)

B.Basher I certainly understand what you're saying mate, and see it for myself on a firsts hand basis. I know people who own night clubs, and bars and see plenty of these types of "lads". I even have mates who are into that sort of culture. It isn't a piece of me to be honest, and I don't think it's right either. There was something on the news not so long ago about drinking alcohol constantly being on the rise because of these sorts of people. Plus B.Basher don't just believe it's "just the guys" because trust me it isn't. Girls are just as bad, and actually I think statistics show that women are the biggest cause of this rise of binge drinking in the UK.

I personally hate club culture with a passion myself.

That just sounds like how many American 20-something males act, superimposed over Britain's existing culture. Trust me, I'm just like you, I can't identify with it at all.

Over here it's such a problem mostly because the guys who act like that are the ones who get girlfriends and sex. Guys wouldn't act like that if it wasn't effective. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not blaming the females here, it's still the males actually doing it. It's just that it also shouldn't work, and it does. Why it's so prevalent

Me too man, and a video game geek, and a cartoon geek. That's the problem with huge, generalising labels. Take lad culture for example, it's universally accepted, as is evident in our so called men's magazines, that all 20 something British men go out and get fucked, have sex with a different woman every night out and totally love football. For this reason it's almost unspeakable not to pertain to such a mindset. It's considered irregular and thus in some mentalities, boring, uninteresting, uncool, etc, which I think is a tad ridiculous considering not everyone likes to conform to such a lifestyle.

Hope you understand the point of the thread.
