I have 3 Afghanis right now that are 6 weeks into flower. Buddy I got them from says they are 50 day plants, which they will be tomorrow. I can kinda see the trichomes and they are getting about 50% milky from what I can see. About 85% of the hairs are dying and the calyxs are swollen. I did start starving them a week ago. Anyways I thought this week they would be ready to chop but now I'm thinking one more maybe two weeks. What do you think? I wanted to do a gradual harvest and take the top buds then give the bottoms an extra week. I'm going to try to get some better pics up here if there are any specifics you would like to see I can try to get different shots.

Thanks

Here are a few close ups, the best I could get. I don't want to be impatient and chop too early, but I would love to chop them asap, know what I mean?

ello there chrissy.. wow i must say your babys put mine to shame.. they look amazing.. erm well if i was you i would get a 30x jewlers loop and check the trichomes like that.. then you can be sure to harvest right...but ye that sounds good taking the tops first and letting the bottoms fattern up some.. i do it myself.. if you cant get hold of a jewlers loop.. i would surgest harvesting the tops at 8weeks then leave the bottoms another week.. but thats just me.. most strains indica dominant finish around 8weeks.. i allso find that more often then not the plants will take like 7-10days more then the recemended harvest window by the breeder.. but then again i like more of a heavy stone so i like to wait a bit.. anyways whatever you end up donig.. best of luck with the rest of your grow.. and have a happy harvest... get them trimming fingers ready:p
pps.. props for your wicked pics.. very frosty stuff.. damn im felling cold hahaha:rasta:

Thanks guys. Like I said they are 6 weeks, buddy works in the other garden with these guys moms and says that 50 days is all they need, I'm very tempted to chop tomorrow. I can't find a cheap magnify anything around here and money is tight. I do have a mag glass but it isn't great, I'm trying to find a reading mag glass.

do you happen to have a microscope??

i try and harvest when all trichromes are cloudy, dying hairs are also a good sign its time to cut them down, did you flush yet?

I wish! Do you know how much I could do and learn with one of those!(I'm a geek). Hairs are a check and from what I can see the tricomes are a check, it just seems really soon. I didn't flush but this is their second week with no nutes

damn thats sucks,

radioshack.com has a 60x-100x microscope for 10bucks, its minor investment that saves all the guess work.

the plants looks great BTW wish i had some real seeds lol.

Listen to the one that grows them! That would be what I'd do.Afterall, he is there with them and knew what they would produce and when was the best time frame,to crop. So if he says 50 then add 1 day! Wanna borrow my shears?lol

Yeah tomorrow I get to chop! Wish I had a scale to weigh it up wet. I need to decide what to chop with. I think because I'm only taking the tops I will snip the bud from the plant with wire cutter to pinch the stalk shut so the plant wastes less energy on repair. After that I'll make a clean cut with a rasor at the tip of the stalk coming from the bud so the moisture can flow through there nicely.

Looking very nice. IMO, hairs can die weeks before the trichs start to go amber. Those look like another week at least.

I wanted to do a gradual harvest and take the top buds then give the bottoms an extra week.

Thats what I do, I recommend it.

I dont think the browning hairs tell you much more than alternating branches tell you about sex; they tell you that the plants is getting sexually mature, but not whether the first pre-flowers will come in a week or 2 weeks.
The browning hairs tell me its soon time to start checking the trichs, but not how ripe they are at all.

Hard to tell from the pics, but they look like 10-20% amber to me.

i'd say stick to my old patience quote:

if in doubt, wait a week. if still in doubt, wait a week.

i'd say ten days, give or take... hope that helps :p

Yeah, 10 days is my guess too.

Anyway you can get the Radio Shack microscope for future crops? I just got one and it's great. No more guessing.

No, I meant the bottom pic looks like some trichs are getting slightly amber, but the pic might be showing colors that aren't really there. I personally like for them to get at least 50% amber.

see if the trichromes have "burst" or the majority have taken on a mushroom shape.. this is when it is time to harvest. Thats how we do it outdoors, one branch or even portions of a branch at a time.
