View Full Version : The 1 oz. Shot Glass Grow Competition.
Scarlet Sky

yes, that's right. we will be growing a plant in a 1 oz. shot glass. no flamers please. this is an experiment for fun only. chances of hermie are great, chances of male (if from bean) are high. we KNOW this; the poing is to see if the plant can survive in that small of a container.
weve all seen weeds growing up through cracks in the side walk, this is the same principle.
rules:
you must use a 1 oz shot glass
the shot glass must be clear, for honor system
you may veg for 5 days before going to 12-12
you must stay on a 12-12 schedule from the beginning
you may use just rooted clones or beansprouts only
that's it, pretty self explanatory... all are invited to this whacky challenge. so lets see those shots!
this one rooted a few days ago, i pulled it up and transplanted into a shot. i'll give it a day or two to get over the shock, then into the flower room she goes. strain is dreamgoddess.

I've got to get a shot glass. Just for fun, I may do two. One bean, one clone, as soon as my clones root. Patience Grasshopper.;)

hi mrs green! i too am going to do both. i need another shot glass though, i only have a double shot medicine bottle... i may use it and measure out the one ounce.... it's clear, so you can see the dirt line (to ensure that i'm not cheating:))... but i don't know; it kinda defeats the purpose of the whole shot glass thing..., hell, i'll just get another from the dollar store tomorrow...

Hey orange, why not get in on this with us? It's smalltime and low maintenance, so it shouldn't take time away from school and chores or anything.

Won't the light damage the roots through a clear glass? I would cover mine and just uncover it for pics. Oh is root pruning allowed? I like to start playing with that. Maybe I'll pick up a glass, maybe.

i would have to see if these clones take, otherwise I'll have to use a clone taken while in flower.

I took all my clones from flowering plants. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I would have taken them earlier, but I didn't have the stuff to keep them alive.

crissy, there may be some dammage, and you can cover with a cloth or something, but you must show the glass in your pix. rule ;) root pruning is not only allowed, but more than likely necessary. we'll see, mine is going in the flower room tonite, she seems to have no xplant shock.
hey orange, i know you have a shot glass :D come on, you know you want to!

LOL! I'm an only child, so I torture my own kids like a big sis would. You should see the stuff I do to them, it's terrible.
Last week, I got my 8 year old with the old "if your hand is bigger than your face, you'll live to be 80" trick. She put her hand in front of her face, and I mugged her with it. She was so mad she shoved me about 4 feet (she's a tall girl, takes after her dad) and wouldn't speak to me for an hour. LOLOLOL! I could NOT stop laughing.

lmao... I am surprised she didn't kick you in the shins. Try some other things like the finger trap one where you tell them to put their pointer and middle fingers on both hands ontop of eachother (they are all parellel), then grab a hold of the 4 fingers like you are grabbing onto a steering wheel lol. Once your fingers are in someones grip, you can't get em out lol.
The experiment sounds like a fun one. How about I stick a jiffy pellet with bagseed in a shot glass and I'll go from there.

Soaked the seeds overnight and threw them into the soil this morning, they are sitting covered with saran wrap on the furnace. I'm not totally sure how big my shot glasses are, one is a little bigger than the other, is it ok if the glasses aren't exactly 1oz?

i have a question how do you water it without flooding it?
also i have no idea how to trim roots without killing it.
i might just try it but seeds for me are hard forf me to come by my sacks never have seeds. and my conect either wont give me ones he gets or doesn't have them. and i can't afford to buy and waiste even 1 seed since there expensive. i just started my only 4 seeds i am hoping they bust through the soil anyday now. but if i come across a seed i will try it.

...i'll have pix when the lights come on, i gess i should do a picture tutorial too...
to water, use an eydropper, 37 cents at a dollar store. i usually just moisten the top, and let it seep. you can look and see when the soil is dry (hence the clear container) watering is easy. about ten to fifteen drops is plenty for a day or two...
as for root pruning... genty pull the plant out when the soil is dry, crumble some of the outside dirt off, use scissors and snip about a half inch off all sides... grab a small handful of dirt, put the ball on it, close your hand, and place into the shot glass. all excess will fall around, leaving a freshly root pruned and repotted plant.
and btw, clones are allowed and even PREFERRED! just thought i'd reiterate...

s'ok, both ways are acceptable, but your odds of a clone suceeding are greater than those from bean.

the term "flamer" in this scenario means, harbringer, badmouther, etc. i meant no disrespect, only that pessimism is not wanted in this thread. this is not a yeild or health experiment, but one to see the survival ability of the plant. if you'd like to join, please do; we'd love to have you. if you don't want to try it, and can't offer any optimistic and/or freindly words, then please, don't post.
i've nothing against you jack, never have. my bad if you took my statement the wrong way. i just have a tendency to take words for what they're worth... and the statement of "murdering you while you sleep" is, imo, both threatening and insulting.
i hope we can call it even, and move on to bigger, better, and more peaceful topics of converstation:)

Here's the scoop folks....
Went ahead and germ'd 5 aurora indica earlier today, they were getting old so i figured this was a perfect use for them!
I noticed there are two general types of shot glasses, small and medium. I have a small shot glass but the trouble is when 1oz. of medium is placed inside it isn't quite full (i mean, it's almost full! optimism!). I have an old 4oz. clone measuring cup that i cut down to 1.3oz for this contest!
I have decided to fill the plastic container to the 1oz. line and fill the shot glass all the way to the top, which may hold an additional 25-35% more medium.
I decided to plant two seedlings to increase my odds of a female. My current grow is 2 weeks into 12/12, so this should work out perfectly! I have never put a seedling into 12/12 from the start, i'm interested to see the results from seed.
Here are some pictures so you get the idea of the sizes i was referring to....
Oh yeah, for those of you thinking "Hey, using more medium is cheating!", i suggest you go as far as i did and actually measure the medium cause the shot glass i have is very small - 1oz. of medium filled it 3/4 full! Anywho, i plan to set the most promising seedling in the 1oz. container to keep within the rules. :)
Happy growing folks!

What you see in the flower box there are 4 strains currently 2 weeks into 12/12! White widow, bubblelicious, purple cheese and top44! 9 plants total.
When i add the two for this contest it will look comical in comparison. :)
The aurora seeds are from at least two years ago, and boy were they delicious. 'Bout time i got rid of 'em!

seriously, the watering is not difficult; you just have to feel it out so as not to over water. i do sog's in tupperware with no holes, never had probs with rootrot or overwater... the trick is to give them just enough. practice makes perfect.

Today, the bean has sprouted! Rules state the plant is allowed to go on a 5 day light binge, so i'm on 24/0 for the first 5 days, then will go into my flowering box with the others.
Pic #1 is the sprout today, pic #2 is my current grow back when the seedlings were 5 days in soil. Just a beacon of measurement, hopefully the Aurora develops even faster, not likely though.
Guess i have to cross my fingers and hope i get at least 1 set of true leaves before i go 12/12, then cross my fingers again and hope it's a girl!! Then again and hope it survives!! So much fingering.
Sorry for the quality, my LG Chocolate ain't all it's cracked up to be.

So I went to transplant my seedling, and I think I cut the root. . . It's in the shot glass now but it's drooping to the floor. I am going to keep it under 24/0 till I see signs of growth. . . Sad.

wow this thread is intresting... I would love to try this... it would be amazing to grow a joint... i would love to smoke that joint so much lol. I never grew b4 but I want to get into it :).... that would be cool if some how this creates like some new type of strain that only produces 1 joint and you could plant these things outside like have 1000 little plants and when ever u want a joint just go and harvest 1 plant and have ur joint for the day lol

Sadly I'm no longer going to be taking part in this competition. Neither seed germinated + I'm moving in 1 month or less. I will however still be watching this thread.
It figures though doesn't it? I tried germinating 3 seeds in soil, 1 in each of the two shot glasses, and 1 in a 26oz. Kahlua bottle. The Kahlua bottle has a little seedling that just poked it's head out of the mouth of the bottle. Hopefully it grows fast so I can get a few good pictures.
Good luck to everyone taking part in this competition.

seeds are planted, lets see what can't be done.
i made sleeves for my glasses while they're under the lights, to reflect light and hopefully protect the roots. I'll be amazed if these two even sprout, but we'll see. since my others are in 12/12, they're going to start at 12/12.

Word.
Was gonna do 2 Aurora Indica for this party, but the larger of the two is showing beautiful characteristics and i may keep vegging it for my next rotation. The stem and undersides of true leaves are a dark purple, including the veins on the leaf surface. Also has been growing very well. Sexy!
I'm gonna keep the actual shot glass seedling in the box for this "experiment" - lets see if it flowers, and if i can ruin the whole crop behind it should it be male. I think i can!
Oh, i just wrapped duct-tape around my containers. Sorry i'm not all that like you sleeve-toting grandmas. Knit me some sleeves, too?

I wish I'd noticed this thread sooner. The last bud I bought was really good and had exactly four seeds hiding in it. I saved the seeds for a practice grow once my parents who are staying with me at the moment finally get to go home. I bought some really good seeds for several strains but the more I thought about it the more I realized it was silly to waste such expensive seeds on my first attempt. This shot glass grow idea is really interesting, and cute. Come on, say it with me friends. Midget Marijuana! Yayness! That is just too cute for words really. I hope they actually flower because I really want to see those pictures. Itty bitty budkins peeping out of shot glasses. LOL! Ok, sorry. I may be a little too blazed to post without sounding like a complete moron right now. At any rate, good luck mini-growers! And good luck to the lil greens as well! Grow babies, grow!

I'm in, germinating will begin under the aquarium light sometime today. Is any shot glass shape acceptable or does it have to be the standard "V" shaped glass?
I'm gonna use some bagseed that I am just finishing up my first test grow of, 3 of the 4 plants I have are lookin' happy and dense, with one plant with these strange airy buds, but whatever...
I'm thinking about using a tall skinny shot glass to give the taproot more room to grow vertically. It's still 1.5 oz but it looks bigger (I've done the taste test).

Here's the kids. I neglected to water them for a bit so they don't look terribly wonderful, but they're looking much better than they did two days ago.
My method so far - I started them on the windowsill as ungerminated seeds. After they sprouted, I tossed them in with my other plant which is on 12/12 right now. But the other plant has become far too large (even for itself), and I had to put em back on the window sill. Our days are pretty much 12/12 right now anyway, so I think they'll be fine. if they make it to flower at all, I'd be shocked!

Did you find it difficult to get the dirtball out of the glass? In hindsight, i think next time i'd use wax paper to line the glass or something, but I was wondering how you managed to get it out without use of something like that. Did you use a knife?

Hey Primus. Yeah, it was hard. I used a plastic butter knife, and ended up actually just tearing some roots. Then I plopped some more dirt in. She doesn't seem any the worse for wear though.

about 11-18 weeks from seed, 8-14 weeks from clone.
I have not yet started my shot glass (I am going to enter into this year old competition soon though)
But I have plants that were grown from seed, vegged for one week and then were switched to 12/12
They have been under ideal conditions (not a shot glass)
They are at 6 weeks
Based on your 11-18 week time-line, what is an estimated range for appropriate height for plants in the 5-7 week range, if they have been under 12/12 the entire time?

Perhaps it would be possible.... drill lots of holes in the bottom and bottom sides of the shot glass, then place it in a .5inch deep reservoir with a pump and moving water, flowing through?

i dont see why it would be hard...
in dwc style, run a mini air hose into the glass. (the roots may clog the airstone tho...
ebb adn flo may work nicely with a hole or 2 in the bottom. (however, rules would be that roots extending out of holes must be immediately cut back to the edge of the glass)

I'm just reaching for a limb here, but...
Dixie cups aren't lightproof. So could it not have had some root trimming affect when it came into contact with the edge of the pot and the light. B/c the light changes roots, turns them green and confuses them, which to me would stop or slow growth. So naturally the roots in the middle would have to pick up the slack. In theory roots extend to seek out more needed nutrients but if you were very carefull to aways have them provided in the proper balance the roots should spend more time growing the plant and less energy growing roots.
The only other thing I can think of is actual root trimming, I hack off the outside of the root ball on my mothers every couple of months to keep them bonzia.
Then again I'm just thinking out loud.
Oh and even though it's not your pic you still snuck some rep out of me.

Heh this is kinda funny, and timely.. I'm at about two weeks on some plants I started in 3oz. clear plastic cups and they're doing great! Started with five seeds, 4 germ'd but only two survived so far.. but those two are doing great!
No ferts, just plain tap water that I let sit in the sun for a couple days to de-chlorinate.. and I alternate between leaving them in the window sill and putting them in my closet at night under a single 34-watt CFL with some reflective gear (tin foil and the tray is a recycled chinese food container)
I do have access to all kinds of goodies (halogen floodlights, oasis foam, all kinds of plastic/clay/ceramic/glass pots, good soil, even some rooting solution!) because the guy I rent from is a florist and landscaper.. but I hesitate to use it because he might know I took something.
I tried growing last year and he killed the one plant I had going. B/c of that I was thinking I might wait for sex to show then plant them out in the woods someplace.. but then again this mini-grow idea is something that might be worth a try! I'll see if I can get some pics of my babies for y'all.

Okey dokey. All I can say is... halogen lights (lol) ... using someone else's shit without permission, espeically KNOWING he doesn't want you growing... Karma has a way of biting you in the ass. And I'm not going to tell you why. But you need to read this thread:

Stealing grow supplies is wrong.

It's called standing up for what we believe in. NOT becoming what 'the man' says we are.
Check the TOS. Talking about doing or planning crimes is specifically prohibited here.
If you don't get it, maybe you belong on another site.

The plants I guess clones in the blue cups. That is unreal.... They don't usually grow so compact if they don't have enough room for roots to grow.

It is possible to live an ethical life without your actions dictated by law. In fact, many people would add that the law only exists to compensate for a lack of morals in some individuals, and that if all humans could be counted on to act ethically in all situations, law would be unnecessary.
Debates like this are definitely a good thing IMO; however we should try to keep the name-calling to a minimum if y'all don't mind.

They don't teach about them here, atleast not in any of my schools. I'm 21 and graduated top of the class with honors including a grade 12 world issues crouse(that was all about americans and terrorism, not nessisarily togather). I had to learn about all the ledgends on my own.
Stealing is wrong and so is growing in or on a peice of property that is not yours, excluding government and public property. Because we are the public and we are supposed to be the government as a democracy.
However I don't see the point in everyone jacking a good quality thread and tainting it because of some Noob who is probably a minor playing grown up, and who doesn't even know enough that you never use clear pots.

Shhhh!!! ;)
I think I might end up moving the debate to the ethics thread.

I've never followed any law. I've always just done what I feel is right and responsible, and been empathetic and compassionate to all beings my ripples may effect.
EX
I don't follow the laws of the road I drive in such a way that is safe for my passengers and everyone else near or on the road. If everyone drove like this we wouldn't need photo taffic lights, and radar traps.
