View Full Version : Spending $$ on genetics

Obviously, good seeds make for good plants. But I'm wondering if it's really worth forking over for "premium brand" seeds, like from the more established Amsterdam seed banks? Are the claims to superior genetics genuine, or for most strains (esp. older established ones) is buying cheaper seeds going to be just as likely to get good results?

In my experience it can go either way.
Take Nirvana Standard for example.
VERY inexpensive.
They have a version of mango that is called Papaya and is lovely.
They have a White Rhino knockoff that is powerful but carries the easy-to-herm trait. Especially bad for a noob, and even I had MAJOR problems with it.
There are some reputable breeders that are still selling very reasonably priced strains... under $100 USD for fabulous genetics.
I was very happy with the service I got ordering Subcool's stuff from cannaseur.com! And there's no argument that his and Jill's genetics are some of the best ANYWHERE.
(But I still am a sucker for bagseed beans from really nice smoke... shhhh... it's my dirty secret! :D)

what Breeders would u guys suggest? from a conservative stand point, good grow+good bud = fair price, above 150 i think isnt worth it, more like 80-120

Plan B Collective is using genetics that as far as I am aware have their roots back in the NorCal Growers Coop days...some smarty pants please confirm/correct?... the same pool that spawned legends like Apollo13 and a lot of the BOG line.
The prices are reasonable too.
Their Black Indica is a pretty hardy plant and I grew it back in the day.
I think bd bud depot, cannaseur, and sacred seed sell them.

Hell ill use bag seeds when I Johnny apple seed that bitch. I love to germinate and then plant in parks, back yards, generally places where no one can disturb them; so why spend money on the uncertain, right? Seriously though the best way to go about finding seeds is to go online and meet other growers. Ive gotten seeds from NY, Cali, Miami, Seattle, Vancouver. Get out and meet people!!!!!!!!:pimp:

hahahaha dusto you are friggin hilarious.
Yeah they don't ship to the US... but stinky works in mysterious ways... with a little help from a cool dude up there in the frozen north, eh! (kisses to KDS)
Granted the beans are probably almost 4/5 years old. But who cares. It's a killah strain. Best pheno of I think bogglegum that has been backcrossed several times. BOG put a lot of work into really stabilizing that bogglegum strain. It might ALMOST be considered an IBL or stable hybrid by now.

ehhhm, ehhhm. I'd consider it what the fuck you want it to be considered. I was trying to get the bx2 a while back off of seeedbay. I bid and won the auction, but my laggin ass never sent the f'in money..<--idiot, and thats when it was only like $95. I gotta go work on this car, but chica check yo mail.

oh i wish i had pals in the growin world, but ever one around here likes to keep quite, well cant blame them i do the same, no wonder. I asked one kid for some seeds who has a connect and he like blew up my face like i had no idea what was going on, saddly mistaken the boy was, might have cut him in on sum. Either way im just gonna order some c99, had a very nice description on joeyweed, they crossed it with others types but i dont want to deal with poor genetics of crosses.

I believe that a large sample size (lots of seeds to plant) is better than buying a few seeds with good genetics.

if you could get 50 1$ seeds and pick the best plant. You'll probaly get a better plant than spending 25$ a seed on two seeds.

....is better than buying a few seeds with good genetics.
.

I agree wholeheartedly, for a grower who plans to start from seed and proceed to propagating from clones.

I think that the true value in the cheap Nirvana strains lies in their frequent variability... the experience I had with a couple of the strains I got from them... of 10 beans, ~7-8 were male or useless, one was fine, and one was exceptional, worthy of being kept as a mother.

This was true of more than one strain I have worked with from them!
