I was wondering how many people think grammar is actually important on a forum? I notice many people use it correctly and many people don't. I personally don't have a problem with people not using it on a forum, but I myself actually like trying to be correct. Sounds a bit sad I guess, but ever since I messed up in class and left school I now love English. My skills are no where near a writers sadly, anyway enough of my crap. Who thinks grammar is important here? Who loves it, and who hates it?

For myself, I have to use grammer. I use what I'm taught.

On a forum though, I don't it is that important. I mean, if you want people to understand what you're saying, then it is wise to write as clearly as you can.

But for spelling errors, I don't care. As long as I know what they're trying to spell and say, then I bypass it.

It's the ones who don't use a period that annoys me. Like, it's one button. Quit being so lazy and use it at the end of a sentence.

Other than that, i could care less how people write.

I prefer to write properly because it shows that I do have braincells in my head.

It's also a good habit to get into. You go for job interviews later on in life, or you have to write and important letter to someone, you want to come off as bright. Not having spelling mistakes and bad grammer. Then you look well, stupid.

Kind of on here too. You can't spell or type out a sentence, you're in a heap of trouble for the future, plus you don't come off as looking too intelligent either.

It annoys the crap out of me. I don't mind errors, considering I don't check most of my posts. But at least make an attempt at writing correctly. I don't read some posts because they are to hard to understand.

I know my Spanish grammar much much better than my English grammar. In fact I spelled it "grammer " both times I typed it, thankfully firefox has that built in spell checker.

Is that a spin off from the rep you recieved from me? If so, you have probably guessed I try to be prim and proper. It gets on my nerves a lot when peole use extreme text speak in their posts, I mean it really wouldn't hurt to think about the readers. I am not bothered about the genuine misspellings, but to see people spell the same word out differently twice in the same post, makes me despair, come on people, make a little bit of effort and save our heads!

I think that a lot of this butchering of the English language is done by middle-class kids that want to be "ghetto", due to their identification with rappers and hip hop stars. This has been going on for a long time, and is not original, creative, or attractive. It starts out with people pretending to be ignorant, but eventually they can actually become stupid. This is evident in our society, and it's getting worse.

You can write in any manner you choose... just remember that it gives people an impression of you similar to the neatness of your dress and the cleanliness of your home.

If you have sloppy grammar, excessive typos, poorly-constructed arguments, or that horrible number thing -l1k3 th15- people will judge the CONTENT of your posts as well and may assume that you are just generally sloppy in other aspects of your life.

Good writing skills are something in which you should take a lot of pride. If you know HOW to write, why pretend you don't?

I don't think grammar relates to one's intelligence, persay, but it is nice to see people typing in a recognizable way. I mean, look at Hemmingway. He couldn't even spell. Personally, I can't stand his novels, but a lot of people seem to like them.

I hAtE wEn PpL dO dIs and use completely retarded abbreviations for a simple three-letter word. Or try to act gangsta by spelling like a gangsta would talk. It's kind of funny, imagining a gangsta sitting down at a computer, and getting on a cannabis forum... Spelling all neatly and phonetically...

Shit, I have dyslexia (which also extends to my typing and writing skills) and I can still write in completely legible sentences... So you idiotic kids don't have an excuse... :stoned:

I can't stand that either. Writing in big letters, then small, I mean, that must take more effort to actually type out than to spell right. Using words like "dis" "dat" "aight" and so on, is annoying too. When people write how they talk.

Or people who use the word fuck when they have an online temper tantrum.

All I know, is if you want to come off as an intelligent being, use those skills you learn in school. Like I mentioned before, if you're a 30yr old and you have to write to the government, insurance agencies, or for a career path, using slang words and misspelled words makes you appear like a dum dum. You get into the habit of not using grammar and spelling words wrong, then you'll keep using that habit, or writing a formal letter will be a frustrating task.

All I know is that once you learn how to write and spell, it comes a sixth sense.

Most browsers are kitted with spell checkers so it is easier now to correct bad spelling, grammar however is slightly harder for some to grasp.
As long as I don't need to dissect a post and the posters point is clear then I can overlook a forgotten comma or a misplaced exclamation mark.

I can't help the fact that I'm a really good speller or that I know the intricacies of English grammar. I just kind of picked it up during my many years of intensively studying linguistics. I can't stand to not capitalize things that should be capitalized, or to misspell words. If I know perfectly well how it should be properly written, and I know how to use the backspace key, I can't rationalize to myself sending out a message that contains errors like that.

But I'm not going to heckle everybody who doesn't like to use proper grammar and spelling on the Internet. It's about as futile as trying to build a robot out of toothpicks. As long as you write intelligibly, I don't have a problem.

But just for the hell of it, here are all the spelling and grammar errors so far in this thread:

I was wondering how many people think grammar is actually important on a forum?
Should be a period, not a question mark.

My skills are no where near a writers sadly
"Writers" should be "writer's".

For myself, I have to use grammer.
"Grammer" should be "grammar".

On a forum though, I don't it is that important.
This sentence needs a verb like "think" or "feel".

Other than that, i could care less how people write.
The word "I" should be capitalized. And I think you mean to say you couldn't care less. If you could care less, that means you care to some extent, right?

I prefer to write properly because it shows that I do have braincells in my head
"Brain cells" is two words, not one.

Not having spelling mistakes and bad grammer.
Again, "grammer" should be "grammar".

I don't read some posts because they are to hard to understand.
That should read "too hard", not "to hard".

In fact I spelled it "grammer " both times I typed it, thankfully firefox has that built in spell checker.
The comma should be a semicolon, and the word "Firefox" should be capitalized.

Thank you
This sentence should end in a period.

For me....Depends on the subject.
The word "depends" should not be capitalized.

I don't cair...
The word "cair" should be spelled "care". (obviously)

I think it's fine if people are writing allegebly so that we can understand what's being said without difficulty.
"Allegebly" is not a word. I think you mean "intelligibly".

People who write using numbers to replace letters is just dumb and you should go back to english class!
The word "you" confuses the syntax of the sentence. Also, the word "English" should be capitalized.

Yeah that's how I see it, why waste a useful talent?
There should be a comma after the interjection "yeah", and the comma after "it" should be a semicolon.

personally i try to use correct spelling and grammar...
Should read "Personally, I try to use correct spelling and grammar."

i think its funny when people abbreviate words and use slang a TON but it doesnt bother me..
The word "I" should be capitalized. "Its" should be "it's". "Doesnt" should be "Doesn't". The sentence should end with only one period.

people should do/type whatever/however they want within thematic reason
"People" should be capitalized, and the word "thematic" is being used incorrectly.

I don't think grammar relates to one's intelligence, persay, but it is nice to see people typing in a recognizable way.
"Persay" should be "per se".

As far as a post is intelligable, I guess bad grammar is fine, if a bit irritating.
"Intelligable" should be "intelligible".

All I know, is if you want to come off as an intelligent being, use those skills you learn in school.
The first comma is unnecessary and should probably be omitted.

All I know is that once you learn how to write and spell, it comes a sixth sense.
"Comes" should be replaced by "becomes" or perhaps "comes as".

to each his own i see many people use it and many many people not use proper grammer, in my eyes its a forum so i dont realy care
Uhh...wow. This should read "To each his own. I see many people use and many, many people do not use proper grammar. In my eyes, it's a forum, so I don't really care."

umm... i do my best.. but my best isnt the greatest... so you may notice, that i spell alot of words all fucked up... and that i dont use the proper puncuation in parts of my typing,,, but i try to make it under-standable

i hate grammar. although i can't stand not knowing how to spell a word correctly.
The word "I" should be capitalized in both instances, and the first period should be a comma.

i have a dictionary next to my computer that i use daily.
Again, both instances of "I" should be capitalized.

booooooooooooo grammar
The word "Booooooooooooo" should be capitalized, and the sentence should end with a period or exclamation mark.

Most browsers are kitted with spell checkers so it is easier now to correct bad spelling, grammar however is slightly harder for some to grasp.
The comma should be a semicolon, and two commas need to be added: one after "grammar" and one after "however".

As long as I don't need to dissect a post and the posters point is clear then I can overlook a forgotten comma or a misplaced exclamation mark.
"Posters" should be "poster's", and there should be a comma after the word "clear".

as long as i can understand it ,its all good
The first "as" should be capitalized, as should the word "I". The comma should precede the space and not follow it. The word "its" should be "it's", and the sentence should end in a period.

Using grammer falls into the same category as having manners or a little class.

So, strictly speaking, no its not necessary. But I'll probably have a hard time not ignoring those without it.

Congratulations oneironaut, for apparently being loaded down in one of those categories but not the others...

LOL oneironaut- I am an English teacher and what you did on that message is what I must do every time I grade papers. It is a wonder I am still sane.:S1:

I also overlook grammar errors on posts, for though it causes me pain to see the abuse, I can't be a teacher 24/7. Besides, I may make a spelling error myself someday (due to my extremely baked state), and I hope I will be forgiven.

The problem with spelling and grammar abuse is that I believe the more organized and clear your writing is, the more precise and controlled your thoughts will be. I have seen that to be true for my writing students over the past 11 years that I've been teaching.

Internet communication is through writing (duh), so it stands to reason that the better you are at using that skill, the better you will be able to communicate, persuade, engage, etc. It seems logical that in order to use the internet to the best advantage, people should learn how to write well.

The best way to do that is to read-
your brain absorbs the structure of grammar while you are being entertained- it's awesome the way it works. You exercise your imagination, learn about another point of view, and absorb syntax, just by reading a book. :lovestruck:

Personally, I think that grammar is important. However, its not near as important as spelling. Speaking for my collegeboy self, I read alot of textbooks, but I have a short attention span (thank you MJ). Great thing is, I can read FAST and retain much of it. I can read a two page thread in no time flat and grab most every detail. However, if I get into a thread with an idiot who uses horrid slang and even worse spelling, I can no longer read quickly. Then I skip to the next post.

If yall want your posts read by me, keep it somewhat fluent and don't misspell so much shit. Thats why I have a better "relationship" with some of the users on here. They can lay out their thoughts and ideas clearly. Therefore I read them faster and more complete.
