when you told me to get some cfl's on the flytraps, did you mean the lights need to be pretty close to them, or would like three cfl bulbs in my ceiling fan be enough as long as they were getting dirrect light from them (they wouldn't be getting sun cuz my windows are boarded up)

Lemme take a pic of my plant stand... I have the CFL's close and plants love it... when you put them far away it is def better than none but not as
good as right on them...

this is what I meant... in a cieling fan the walls and surfaces is going to absorbe a lot of the light...

I have a plugin timer that is set for 16 hours a day and the plants love it...

Skink, while we're on the subject of asking you for your expertise, I have a Q for you, too, honey. (We DO think alike, by the way. I read your comment on that other thread. This is probably why you're one of my two online husbands!)

My dishwasher is doing this stupid thing where it's started leaving a white film on everything and isn't cleaning very well. It's only about five or six years old, but it's not performing like it should. Is there anything I can do or an appliance expert or plumber can do, or does that really mean it's time for a new dishwasher? Is there some sort of filter or trap that needs cleaning out? I saw an ad on TV for some stuff called dishwasher cleaner, something you put in there and run through a cycle without any dishes. Wonder if that's worth doing? Thanks, Skink!

Do you have a water softener in the house???

are you useing a rinse agent in the d/w like Jet-Dry???

No, we don't have a water softener, and we probably need one. We have very hard water here, and it etches things after a time with mineral deposits. That's what the white film seems like, but it also seems to be partially a detergent film, too. I'm using the same Cascade detergent that I always have, but this problem has just begun in the last three months or so.

I do use that Jet-Dry rinse aid stuff and always have, but that doesn't seem to be helping any more.

Hmmm, well, I looked at that page, and the whitish film does come off the dishes and stuff with a vinegar rinse. Is there some way I could do a vinegar rinse on a whole dishwasher? There's also a white film on the heating/drying coil at the bottom of the dishwasher and all over the sliding dish racks and silverware basket.

That link and the one on that page that said "Dishwasher not cleaning properly" almost made me think maybe I'm not using enough detergent--or possibly that there's a problem with the water heater, which I think may be wearing out.

Don't tell me I've struck out yet!!

have you noticed that the water in the house is hotter???

Yes, I think so. It does seem like it might be hotter. But I can't see a switch on the heater to turn it down.

is it electric or gas/propane???

Im signing off for now...

elec should have 2 panels,1 top and 1 bottom,,,you need a screw driver to open them... inside is a little dial with an arrow pointing to a temp,,, lower top and bottom 10 degrees... hot water does not rinse well...

I assume gas as the dial is exposed and easeier for someone to fool with it or bump it... it is usually red,,,if so turn it counterclockwise about a 1/2 inch...

It's an electric water heater. I'll get out there with a screwdriver tomorrow when the daylight's at its peak (it's in the back of the garage) and try turning it down. Or I'll get Dave to if there's enough garage light tonight or when he gets home tomorrow.

So if the hot water heater's going and it's been giving us hotter water and not rinsing as efficiently, maybe a new hot water heater might solve the problem? Is there anything I can do to help de-film the dishwasher now? Pour some vinegar in when it's about to rinse?

Skink

just run a cycle with vinegar then add again before the rinse... Are you sure no one just changed a setting on the DW??? there is a heater inside the DW and can be set on or off through settings... I be true,,,new DW/Appliances have so many settings it is confusing to me... Maybe the help screwed with it??? I do not think your WH is going bad...

This is a stretch but do you have a thermometer that goes above 180 like a probe for a roast??? test the temp of the water before you go to the garage... put the thermometer in a glass and run the hot water in the glass for like 10 minutes and see what you go up to...

Inherently a WH will get colder as it goes... it may get hotter briefly before it goes because a heating coil may short and get hot, then quickly die,,,No Where close to the time you are having the Prob,,,3 Months???

Now Dr.Bg,,,go take it's temprature...

Thanks, Skink. I'll try taking the water temp and I'll use the vinegar trick, too. I don't think my housekeeper tinkered with the controls on the dishwasher. I'm the only one who ever runs it. She sometimes puts a dish or two in there, but she never turns it on. It may well simply be that the hard water and time have worn out the dishwasher and it's time for a new one. Thanks for your help and patience in trying to help me diagnose the problem!

One other thing then... when you first got it did it sound like more water was sloshing around??? if you got hard water or a lot of minerals in it,,,that could be clogging the water jets and making them less effective...

it is very hard to diagnose something like this over the internet,,,LOLz...

try opening it mid cycle and see if there is a lot or little water in it,,,water dripping off the plates or if it's dry... if dry put a couple pots of Hot water in it at each cycle,,, if the dishes are better "No or less" film then we know it is the amount of water that is the prob and there is not to much rinsing going on...
