View Full Version : Serious Problems - Spider Mites 6 1/2 weeks into flowering

Just like the title says, there were no signs until about a week ago, then I started spraying daily with Schultz Miticide-Pesticide-Fungicide (active ingredient neem oil). My problem is that I need to get rid of the mites so I don't have a webby, mitey harvest, but I don't want to affect the taste of the buds and I know a lot of products are harmful to use this late in flowering. Currently I'm doing the schultz daily as well as spraying them with water every other day. What else should I be doing?
Thanks,
Dan K.

I would spray them with water a little more often. Make sure you blast the underside and knock the fuckers off without damaging your babies. The other thing to is try to separate the affected plants so they don't spread.

You can also buy "the bomb" from the grow store... shoots out chemicals that will kill them and their eggs. Also grab a few pest strips from a hard ware store...get it under control before they reproduce (I believe it takes 8 days to reproduce but I could be wrong) best of luck

Get 1 of those pump sprayers and fill it with water.blast them and the eggs off! Do it again in a couple of days. Then when you have harvested clean all of the area properly and use neem oil on the plants when ya start the next grow. You won't see any mites at all until you flower,if ya don't clean you will have them again.Put the strips in the room and change them a month before time.Mine was in flower, too! Not as far as you are, though.I just would not risk pesticides that close to tokin'! Just givem' a bath.
Neem is organic, but still will leave a taste on the buds.

thanks, that's what I'm worried about is the bad taste of the neem oil. I definitely plan on bug bombing and scrubbing my room in between grows, I'm just more worried about finishing up this grow, but you're saying I should just stop with the neem oil and just blast them with pure water from now on?

i have one more question, I am also using another spray which says on the bottle its fine in edible vegetables up until the day of harvest, its base is potassium fatty acid I think (that's from memory I'll check for sure later), I think it's some sort of insecticidal soap, would that be safe to continue using?
Dan K.

k, the product I was talking about earlier is Schultz's Insecticidal Soap, its active ingredient is 1% potassium salts of fatty acids and it says on the bottle it is safe to spray on edibles up until the day of harvest, so do you think I can use this to combat the mites in the last 10 days or so before harvest?

HOT-SHOT NO PEST STRIPS ARE YOUR BEST BET.
NO BUGS, NO MOLD, NO FUNKY TASTE.
THOSE SPRAYS THAT ARE SAFE ON EDIBLES............ ARE THEY SAFE ON SMOKABLES? IMHO, EATING CERTAIN THINGS ARE MORE SAFE THAN SMOKING CERTAIN THINGS.
BUT WHAT DO I KNOW?
I SWEAR BY THE PEST STRIPS. WILL KILL THEM BASTARDS IN A FEW HOURS.
GOOD LUCK

will pest strips really get rid of spider mites?? It seems like they pretty much chill just on my buds and suck on the leaves, doesn't seem like too many of them would get caught in the pest strips. I'm not trying to discredit your idea, thiis is simply my first time dealing with the bastards and I just want to understand how it will help.
As far as your other point, I know what your're saying :sadcrying hopefully someone here has experience with this product and knows a little bit more?

I put one in my room a couple hours ago. It's only like 7 X 7 X 5, so it should only need 1 strip, I'll probably continue once or twice more with the insecticidal soap as well and hopefully I'll be clear for harvest! Day 43 and everything is looking good, thanks

Neem doesn't do anything other than empty your pocket book and create work. I used Kelthane 2.5 months ago and the critters are gone. I have friends who use Avid and have reported the same. Kelthane is really inexpensive (@$8/ qt which makes 96 gallons of solution and in the past 3 months I have used less than 1 quart of mixed solution....).
Please be aware that you need to follow directions and wear protection when applying these product.

Better question
Are no pest strips safe to use with a six month old in the house? The plants are in the basement and she never goes down there.

I would say yes,,,, but wouldn't take the chance.
I'm sure you use worse products in your house than Pest Strips.
But why take the chance when your precious baby is there.
Best of luck

I owuld have to disagree... neem oil works great,, the trick is to use it before you geta bug problem (this will save you money in not buying a quick fix chemical). I use it weekely even if I don't have a bug problem. It works as a prefect preventative to bug outbreaks. by the time the plant is really mature it has enough neem oil coating on its leafs that Some bugs (mites) wont even be able to bite into the leaf.
Like any bug problem the best way to not get them is to prevent them by paying extra attention to small details right from the time you germinate your seeds. To the end when you harvest.
Couple things to keep in touch with.... Grow room should be cleaned once a week Witha vacume if you gotz one, And use neem oil even if you don't see any bugs...
Its more work but saves time and money in the end when your scrambling to find a chemical that will cure your problem.

OK,
I had been using the Kelthane with limited sucess, but then 4 months ago I tried Avid (which I got on ebay from a gal in Florida, as you cannot buy it in California). I have not had one mite show up in that time. Yields are great, plants look terrific, all of my clone customers are now happy......!!!!!!
Just make sure you wear the proper gear when applying it!!!
