View Full Version : Army Reserves?

I was wondering if anyone has ever thought about the Army or anything related. I always thought the Army was for suckers who couldn't fall into an original line of thought and go out and do things on there own, and just relied on the easy accesible benefits of the army. But I've come to realize that was a real easy opinion to have while living in my moms house, eating her food, and spending some of her money. I'm growing up and have to think about my future and I don't see anything happening as of lately.
Plus after looking at their website I noticed joining up does not just mean going through basic then being shipped off. They have all sorts of jobs. Like the one I want to do: Visual Information Equipment Operator/Maintainer (http://www.goarmy.com/JobDetail.do?id=9&fw=reserveNps). It's exactly what I wanted to go to college for, but through A.R it can be paid for and then I get health care and shit.
Anyone been in the Army or is looking into it? Have any input?

That sounds boring though. The only reason I would go into reserves is to do that job I listed above.

go Navy man, the Navy is the only one that 'guarantees' the job you sign up for. but whatever you do, get it in writing!
one thing i can tell you though, the military will completely change your life. people, be it on this site or in your day to day life, will tell you not to do it, that the military brainwashes you. don't listen to people that hate on the service. the military is a great choice, granted you will have to give up smoking weed, but i dont think you'll miss it if you do. you'll meet the best friends of your life, and it will open A LOT of doors for you.

So you're telling me if I signed up for a job in the Army they really don't have to give me that job?

I am my own hypocrit I guess.
I don't believe in the army, or any form of militia.
Yet without war the world population would skyrocket.
Go for it man, I don't have the motivation.

they really don't. but they really probably will. i don't know about reserve though. im not really sure how the NG works, but the most people i know that are in reserves are infantry. are you totally against going active duty??

yeah screw active duty. i'm slowly starting to realize thats what reserves are probably for huh? to con you into thinking its partime then before you know it you're getting sent off to war. I'm not even going to do reserves i decided. I just want to do what stated above in my first post, but its accesable in the army and that means i would get free training and health care and shit. but i do not wanna get switched out on and end up over seas shooting guns.

My ex-boyfriend joined the army reserves back in late 2002, Oct. I believe. Early 2003, at the start of the war, he got shipped off to Iraq and stayed for 13 months.

 Howdy Void,

When I was 17,I put away my childish things..and I took an oath, before God,to defend, protect and preserve America, from all enemies, both foreign and domestic..at that moment-I was fully prepared in my mind,to fight to my last drop of blood, defending America, our citizen's and our allies. I joined the Navy..and the next thing I knew,I went from a sunny ,warm day in Texas,to a sub-freezing snowstorm at O'Hare airport. I was surrounded by yankee's..lol..but they did not deter me from fulfilling my goals.

Be grateful, that we don't have the draft or mandatory military service, like Israel,be grateful that you still have the choice not to serve.

Have a good one !

I took the oath,
drank foreign beer
fucked foreign women
beat up and got beat up by foreign men,
ate foreign foreign food.
was hated by many forigen people.
came home,and went to school.
To me the army is a stepping stone, if you need to get yourself out of a funk do it. But if you can save money otherwise, enjoy smoking pot, and hate being told what to do then don't go for it.
Remember when you are in the army, you do in fact have a 9/5, you can change your 9/5, and it might be fun, but besides that, you will a have 24 hour 7 day a week job, you will never disapear off the grid (flying from japan to america they did an "eye scan" and i was already in the system,) you will always have to come home and if something needs to be done, and you can do it, you will do it, even if it means harm. forget personal safty, its always mission first.
You up for that?

Man I just wanted to do visual managment and get my college paid for and have some healthcare. Not kill anyone or get killed for some bullshit war I probably wouldn't even support.

I think thats what any vet will tell you.
You may go to become the prince of egypt.
But there is a chance you'll end up killing or getting killed protecting people who are closer to you then family.
fair trade to me, not to others. If you don't want to join the army then don't. i say its a good exp though. Oh and Wayoftheleaf, please give it up. You know nothing about army life, or andim willing to go out on a limb and say this; real life situations. Don't put down things you do not understand, isn't that the reason why us canna smokers get locked in cages?

You're one of those people who needs to read more and write less. At least half the time when you make a statement, it's absolute baloney.
Wars aren't how the world keeps population down, in case you didn't know that. Read the information below for a start.

hmmm...
i think there is something in the water because my husband is considering similar thoughts (goodness help me)...lemme tell you.....i wasnt in the army but i was an army wife, and it really takes a special person to make the choice to be a soldier....id like to say this doesnt seem like the best time to do so, but in reality, someone has to do it, and there never will be a "right time"....educationally, it is awesome and there are teriffic benefits...
in the end, like anything else in your life, it can be what you make it...it would be a growth eperience like no other..

i am about to join either the army reserves or the national guard paired with doing army rotc to get commisioned as an officer when i graduate. and while i am in rotc according to my army friend i cant get deployed which is baller.
dont do reserve man, either go to a military college and comission as an officer
according to my relatives who have been in the military those guys get very little respect from the other people because a lot of them dont feel that rotc people have earned it. just what i heard

the respect thing is true, but people who go gold make way more money, do less physcial work (more paper, just as important) and well
tell you what to do.
If i decided to go again it would be gold. (officer)

i 100% agree with that. i dont think i am officer material and i really dont want to tell people to do but in order to stay out of combat and finish my degree i would have to do rotc. but i guess i would be the cool officer who didnt give a shit and i would listen to my non commissioned officers.
