J.R.R Tolkien once said that of all the possible combiantions of words in the English language, Cellar Door was the most linguistic.

Does anyone know what this means? It sounds slightly ominous.

I agree.

I don't have anything against donnie dark though, it was a cool movie.

It is hella annoying when people try to sound sophisticated or deep. I totally get where he is coming from.

But who's trying to sound sophisticated and deep? J.R.R. Tolkien, one of the greatest and most imaginative writers I've ever read about, said that HE thought they were the most beautiful two words you can put together in the English language. Why?

"Most English-speaking people...will admit that cellar door is 'beautiful', especially if dissociated from its sense (and from its spelling). More beautiful than, say, sky, and far more beautiful than beautiful. Well then, in Welsh for me cellar doors are extraordinarily frequent, and moving to the higher dimension, the words in which there is pleasure in the contemplation of the association of form and sense are abundant."

"Supposing you say some quite ordinary words to me - 'cellar door', say. From that, I might think of a name, 'Cellardoor', and from that a character, a situation begins to grow."

Ai! laurië lantar lassi súrinen,
yéni únótimë ve rámar aldaron!
Yéni ve lintë yuldar avánier
mi oromardi lissë-miruvóreva.

Hes just trying to sound all cool. Cellar door sounds...I don't think it sounds that great.

I think it is a beautiful -hrase, especially in Poe's *the raven* which is where i believe the director made the mistake.

i dunno.. i just feel like theres so many better phrases that have made chills run down my spine when i heard them. cellar door (to me at least) just sounds like what it is, and when those two words are said to be oh so amazing.. i dont know its jsut kind of pathetic.

Isn't "cellar door" being used out of all the words in the english alphabet in every combination supposedly the most beautiful sounding, according to Donnie Darko?

It was Tolkien, and yes, he thought the words "cellar door" were pretty-sounding, if the claims about his having said that are true.
