i only have one of his albums(Apostrophe'/Overnight Sensation), and the music is okay when your sober, but when your high, it tells a whole different story. the story is completley random. when your high, it makes sense. anyone else like him?

Zappa was very anti-drug, so if you're enjoying his music while high keep in mind that it was not written for that purpose.

Anyway, Cruising with Ruben and the Jets, and Absolutely Free, are two albums by the Mothers that I still have on vinyl.

I got into Zappa around 3 years ago from hearing Lumpy Gravy.

I enjoy most all of his stuff with the Mothers of Invention, although I am still aquiring a taste for some of the solo albums. If you really dig Zappa then you should definitely check out Captain Beefheart. They were friends who I believe went to the same highschool, his music is similar to Zappa's.

Breukelen Advocaat is right about the anti-drug views though... I always enjoy the irony of listening to Zappa when under the influence of whatever I may be.

Don't forget Beefheart and Zappa's "HOT RATS".

Although I never saw him with the Mothers, I did see Zappa him shortly after they disbanded, in New York.

I saw Beefheart at Town Hall in NYC, early 70's. Bob Segar, unknown at the time, was the opening act for one of the shows (don't remember which). The concerts were a year apart. The album was "Clear Spot" for one of them.

At one of the performances, he got heckled and given the finger because some members of the audience were disappointed with his performance. He said, onstage, during a number, "You can do THIS" (giving the middle finger), "But can you do THIS?", and proceeded to blow a virtuoso blues harp solo.

The message of "Clear Spot" was anti-drug, BTW. I â??freaked-outâ?? at that show due to some heavy shit Iâ??d had, but was OK in the morning. The worst part was going home on the subway. I was really spaced, and remember asking one couple in the train station, who also had been at the show, â??Did you see what he did?"

That was something, lol!

no bootlegs. a handful of live albums, guitar compliations, a best of and about 10 posthumous. add that to the 40 or so studio albums and viola. 75. i dont even have any of the "beat the boots" compilations zappa put out himself to stop the rampant bootlegging.

Most people, even his fans, don't understand Zappa. He was a musical genius, humorist, and visionary. Not everything, or even most, of his output appeals to me, but I enjoy some of it immensely. He started Alice Cooper, used Stevie Vai on some of his later records, and countless other people were influenced by him. He basically was "strict" in a period of music that was very loose. He forced his musicains to be better disiplined, and therefore better players. He didn't play favorites - I remember he was on the outs with his friend Beefheart because of a musical problem, and wouldn't even talk to Eric Clapton for a long time - probably because of his (Clapton's) addiction(s).

I got to see him in the early 70's with Lee Michaels and of all bands, It's a Beautiful Day! Beautiful Day was awesome too but didn't quite set the tone for Zappa to come on and blast the auditorium for 3.5 hours! Even Lee Michaels was quite a stretch to be billed with Frank and most of the crowd had to wait patiently for the 1st two bands to finish before we got what we came for...and that pink tab thc sure didn't help the night...what crap that stuff was!

It's not a secret, lol. - especially when writing about things I remember from the 1960's and (gasp!) even the 1950's.

I don't think of myself as "old", though. Age is just a number. If you burn out too young, you'll feel worn out long before your time.

I DO feel that maturity is important - and always have. My idea of maturity is a lot different than many people's. You have to go to your instincts, and aquired knowledge, not just what other people say is right.

Nice...I like that. I think people really limit their possibilities with age.

me too, but in more ways then one, for most that statment would mean basicly the same thing as "you can't teach an old dog new tricks" but it works the reverse way as well... some young people, can be very mature for their age, and grow up VERY fast... i think ALOT of people underestimate young people.... and advocate lol, i'm actually suprised, i had you pegged for maybe 38, at the most, i know you talk about alot of stuff from way back when, but that can be aquired knowledge as well.... with you actually telling your age (for the first time, atleast as i've seen) it actualy confirmed it....

BlueCat, I believe is younger than I am - younger than Gen X, maybe.

Thanks for underestimating my age, lol. If I didn't have salt and pepper hair, I'd probably pass for about 38 - but if I lied and said I was 40ish, many people would believe it. When I tell people that I'm in my early 50's, especially people around my age, they are almost always surprised because they thought that I was much younger than them.

To some young people (not necessarily you, slipknot), anybody that's over 35 is ancient. Walking behind people in the street, I usually pass them - even much, much younger people are slower than I am. I live very much the same way I did in my 20's - although I've got more bread now, lol. I'm also healthier, for other reasons.

My advice to the younger people: Save your pennies, don't live too extravagantly, think creativly, be original, and have fun - not necessarily in that order.

lol i consider 80+ ancient, honestly. cuz you're lucky if you live that long anymore, lucky or you just did right in your life (not smoking, not drinking, keeping healthy all-around) 50 is mid life, it's your prime (tho some will argue it's late 30's-early 40's) it's when you know the most of the knowledge you'll know when you go to the grave, yet, age hasn't taken a great toll on you and you can still move and do things a younger person can, tho maybe not quite as much, or do the things as hard.... you can still do mostly everything the younger ones can.... it's when everything really starts to click together.... "age is just a number" is pretty true, i mean of course, it doesn't hold true to EVERYTHING, but at this age, you can still compete, on a phsycial level, with everyone else.... and i said it before, grey hair means nothing, NOTHING! lol.... i personally feel, the only reason grey hair is 'bad' is because it's a sign you're getting older, and nearly everyone at late 20's to early 30's starts to fear getting older.... so inadvertantly, grey hair becomes a 'bad thing'.... i look at someone with grey hair, and mostly i see a wise person, someone who 'knows their shit' who's been through quite a lot.... and has wisdom to offer.... if i had the choice between turning to same person at age 25, or 50, with everyday problems, it'd be the latter.. i've never understood why so many people over look 'the old', and still don't to this day (altho to be fair, the same goes for younger people, they can offer alot too, age doesn't nessicarily dictate knowledge)..... i've actually had quite a few 'old' friends... by old i mean people in their 30's to their 40's but this was back before i was 14.... (and no, no perverted shit was ever brought up, or signified in any way :p)

???? Ok, so you want to know why Zappa is so special? You just have to listen to his music. He was a musical genius and one of the most determined muscians in history. If he were born in another time in Europe he could have been like Bethovin. His music doesnt always make sense, but it all has some kind of meaning, be it parodaic, humorous, or political.

Yeah, you can really hear the amount of work that he put into his compositions. They are all extremely polished and sound fabulous. I love his sense of humor and he is one of my top 5 favorite artists, up there near Phish, Zeppelin, The Dead, and Floyd. As for someone ealier who said Zappa was anti-drug, that's not true, he just hated hippies.
