View Full Version : Bodies lying in the streets

I was walking down Fifth Avenue in midtown Manhattan the other day and saw a man lying on the sidewalk, motionless, in front of a building. He could have been dead for all anybody knew, but was probably a homeless derelict or junkie. This scene is not an uncommon occurrence in many metropolitan areas.
Not long ago, somebody on this board, from England, said that she heard a rumor that there are dead bodies in the street of the U.S. I told her that you see them, but you don't know whether they are alive or not unless they move.

Every open doorway near canal st in new orleans had at least one person sleeping in it with a bottle of liquor when I went last may. It was craziness.

Stopped in their tracks, rotting meat sacks.
Fell to the ground, with hardly a sound.
Compassion forgotten,
Blind to the pain,
of other human beings...
Merely a stain.

I guess that, rather than guess whether or not a person is dead, it wouldhave been better to take time to ask them...
"Excuse me, but I couldn't help but wonder if you were dead or not"
If they don't answer, and don't respond to rapid kicking and prodding, then one could, reasonably assume that, indeed, that person could be deceased.
That said, I had a hamster once that died.
I buried him.
But then, some weeks later, I was dismayed to hear on the radio that many hamsters were being needlessly buried because of their hibernation tactics. Apparently, they go cold and stiff and look like they are dead!
After some frantic digging in the garden, I was pleased to find that my hamster was indeed dead.
Well, not pleased, but you know what I mean.
Oh no!
But, what if he wasn't dead until I buried him!!!
Where's my spade!
And someone get Quincy on the fricking phone!!!

we don't have dead people lying in the streets, but we have homless people. Or at least we know they are out there. We don't see them. The police have them under controle caus there aren't many of them. And they are not alowed to sleep in the publick areas. Our sosial laws are made to prohibit people from not having a home to go to. By law one has the right to go to ones lokal sosial and helth office and ask for help to buy food, clothes, dental health and money to pay rent. And if you have no home they are required to help you find one and pay the rent if you can not.

I've never seen anyone just lying in the streets. It'd probably freak the shit out of me if I did too. :(

I've never seen a dead body in real life, and there sure as heck aren't bodies laying on the streets here. I don't know much about Vancouver as I just moved here, but there are bums everywhere! Don't even travel to the East Side of town, not unless you want to get killed or hooked on herion or something. :p
But back in Alberta, we had bums EVERYWHERE! All downtown usually because that's where the people are, the soup kitchens, and shelters. I'd see on a daily basis bums passed out in the side bushes along the street, tweekers or junkies passed out in the City Hall park, which, funny enough, is right across the road from the police station. There is a huge problem with Meth in my old city, so we have tweekers running around asking people to buy smokes, and when you don't sell them a smoke, well, temper tantrums 101. My buddy got threatened by a slap in the face because he wouldn't sell this girl a smoke for $2. My buddy is quiet and absorbs all insults, so I stuck up for him by saying to her, "if you touch him, I have no problem knocking a girl out" ;)
that pic creeped my out until i relized she was looking at the giant mantas

Oh Res, you poor thing! Couldnt imagine what ya were going through! Sorry I did laugh out loud, but dang man. Way to break a child!
Haven't seen any dead here, but there plenty of homeless and street drunks in my town. The only dead body ive seen was that of my dearly departed Nana, but didnt freak me out, coz dang its my nan. She died of cancer so when she finally passed it was a kind of relief to see her peaceful and no longer in pain. Damn I miss her!:sadcrying She lived with us, so it wasnt like the nan you only see on birthdays or the weekend. She was such a huge part of my life and has left such a huge void in my life. Miss ya nana!!
Peace
Buddy

The only dead body I've ever seen in person was the guy who smashed his head in riding a motorcycle. I was driving by right after it happened and all I saw was the body and where the head should be was just a pile of mush. It was pretty lame.

if you tried to be dead on the street here in the burbs, you wud die for sure, cause no one would even see you for days, this is why bums live in metro areas...
that seemed a little harsh...
No bums where injured in the making of this post...

Howdy BA,
I reckon that after awhile, city slickers git numb to seeing such a sight, but if it had been me in yer shoes,I would've found a cop and asked him to why the man was being ignored..I already know why,but I'd want to put the cop on the spot..and bring his humanity into question. Living in a big city, will slowly strip one's humanity away, huh ?
I know what it's like to live on the streets of Chicago, and it really sucked..folks just walk by like ya don't exist..and if ya ask for help, they act like yer going to rob em or something. I got so hungry,I ate a tube of toothpaste..at least my breath smelled good..I even thought of waiting on someone to come out of the Pizza Hut and snatch their pizza, but I couldn't bring myself to do it..so instead,I checked out the dumpster for decent throw-aways..which weren't too bad at all.
NoChowder says that he won't even sell a cig for 2 bucks, heck,I'd never dream of selling a cig,I'd just give it away..maybe even the whole pack..you see..but for the Grace of God..there go I.
Have a good one ...

I saw some news report on Iraq yesterday, and they really DO have dead bodies laying on the side of the streets. People just kept driving by, on their way to work or to the market or home or whatever. As bad as the Iraqis had it under Saddam, it actually looks like they have it quite a bit worse now. I guess the only thing preventing civil war there WAS Saddam. Hindsight is so 20/20.

It was a loose-loose situation for the people in iraq. Stll is Maybe one day there'll actually be peace in the middle east. Either that or move everyone out of there, burn it all down and start over from scratch. Btw, I got the idea from an episode of monk. "just burn the whole city down and we'll rebuild a better future". :D

There are tons of homeless people in the city.
Some of them are just wanderers. I met this guy that just wandered the city with his three dogs and his cart filled of stuff, just picking through the trash for food for him and his dogs to get by.

Lol, New York has been one of the places that I have always wanted to go but over the years I rather stay away :p. I seen some one layed out in front of a corner store once but he was a bum drunk, thats about it though.

I was in NYC for New Years Eve '98. Me and a friend fried on some shrooms and saw the Phish show (and the previous three days of shows too). After the show, we left Madison Square Garden and our hotel was only like two miles away so we decided to just walk there from MSG.
It was like 1:00 AM or 1:30 AM when we set out for the hotel. The first thing we noticed was, the whole city looked like the almost-deserted aftermath of a gigantic party (which is what it was, I guess). Just trash and party streamers and stuff everywhere, but very little traffic or people. Of the people that WERE around, about two thirds of them were people just passed out on the street, drunk bums, that kinda stuff. There were also some...scary-looking groups of people. We got paranoid seeing the scary folks, so when we saw this group of like 20 uniformed cops walking the same way we were, we walked faster to catch up to them, and just kinda followed in their wake. That was pretty bizarre, considering we were flying on shrooms and stoned out of our minds, walking with and BSing with a gang of cops, who were really cool and thought it was funny that we were latched onto them for safety.
In fact, for all the bad press NYC gets in regards to the rudeness of the people there, that wasn't our experience AT ALL. Everyone was super nice and helpful, especially the cops (not just those cops either, all of them). I still wouldn't want to live there (the traffic is just crazy, and that many people packed that close together makes me claustrophobic). But it seemed like a great place to visit!
^^ HaHa that sounds pretty good man lol.
When cops arnt constantly trying to nick you for every little thing they can think of its good, and some of them have some good jokes. Although i never meet nice coppers :(

New York City is the safest city in the United States, even with a population of over 8 million people.
