They probably dont know why they fly. They probably just fly because it feels natural, sorta like breathing. maybe? possibly?

yes they fly for fun
i used to work in a warehouse that had pigeons and doves inside flying around, i'm a fork-lift driver by the way, when we drove in and out of sections to pick or place an item the birds would fly within inchs of the trucks, i believed they were playing the equivalent of the great kids game 'chicken' where you try to run accross a road infront of a car.
stupid game i know, but alot of kids are stupid.

We raise pidgeons/doves, chickens, turkeys, pheasants, and guinea fowl.
You would be suprised how intelligent they are.
We have one rooster "pup" who is like a dog. Comes when his name is called and acts like a guard dog. Im in the process of teaching him some simple tricks. One is flying short distances. He enjoys it since he gets food when he's done.
Pidgeons /doves are extremely intelligent and have strong family and social ties. They absolutely love to fly. They perform intricate flying maneuvers and compete in groups to see who can execute the most elaborate routines.
Turkeys are very social and have elaborate social communication. They only fly short distance to reach roost or avoid danger...except when they are young and very much enjoy to fly about the yard showing off to each other. He who flies longer impresses the rest and gets respect for their skills. Once they heavy up they cant do this anymore but they will have established their rep as a strong bird.
The pheasants dont seem to do much flying here. No real need to.
The guinea fowl, maybe they are smart but appear rather simple minded and kinda retarded at times. They will fly all right, right into shit in a panic whenever I approach or make eye contact. I swear one of those dumbassea are gonna have a stroke or hit a wall too hard and die!
peace.

Shamanic techniques could allow someone to turn into a bird or just about any animal using entheogens . Wouldn't it be nice to perceive and act like a bird or a dolphin for a day? :stoned:

Birds aren't highly intelligent animals, they can't comprehend fun, hate, want, they just do what they need to do to survive. And flying is way of survival.

No, I think they fly for the same reason we walk, flying might not be as fascinating to them as it is to us since they do it all the time.

Theyve flown their whole lives im sure theyre bored of it pretty quickly. I doubt they have the capacity to experience fun too.
It is elementary. Birds are a step above us transportation-wise. We can crawl and walk. They can walk and fly. The next stepped would be flying, and timetravel. After that, timetravel and interdimensional travel. Then astral projection.
i like the way you think, very creative

Birds seem to fly as a defence mechanism, and a way to sustain themselves. Thats what protects them from most predators. Since they are very small, they have evolved to meet the challenges they face. Other than that..., i rekon they fly because they think they can.

I was sitting in my car one day and I noticed a bird that kept circling the sky. I thought he looks like he is flying for fun because it did not seem like he was trying to get anywhere in particular. He had his wings spread and at times glided around in the sky. I have seen other birds glide like this so I came to the conclusion that birds do indeed fly for fun:)
I am so glad that there are other people who take time to reflect and notice things like this... a lot of people would be too consumed with their day to day life to even notice. Thank you for making people stop and reflect.

Maybe the bird was exercising, looking for something, was confused about where to go, etc etc etc but I don't think it was for fun. Like alot of people said, it's like if after a long day of walking everywhere, we decide the best way to take load off is to..walk? Probably not, many birds fly for over 70% of their waking life, to do things they have to do to live. If they had the presence of mind to think of their #1 mode of survival, defense, and travel as "fun", I'm sure they'd be long bored of it after an hour of being awake.
Deaf, blind, and other handicapped people value those capabilities more than people who can hear and see properly because they cannot do those things, just like the average guy values flying more than birds because it's a capability that we do not have
