They probably dont know why they fly. They probably just fly because it feels natural, sorta like breathing. maybe? possibly?

yes they fly for fun
i used to work in a warehouse that had pigeons and doves inside flying around, i'm a fork-lift driver by the way, when we drove in and out of sections to pick or place an item the birds would fly within inchs of the trucks, i believed they were playing the equivalent of the great kids game 'chicken' where you try to run accross a road infront of a car.
stupid game i know, but alot of kids are stupid.

We raise pidgeons/doves, chickens, turkeys, pheasants, and guinea fowl.

Pidgeons /doves are extremely intelligent and have strong family and social ties. They absolutely love to fly. They perform intricate flying maneuvers and compete in groups to see who can execute the most elaborate routines.
Turkeys are very social and have elaborate social communication. They only fly short distance to reach roost or avoid danger...except when they are young and very much enjoy to fly about the yard showing off to each other. He who flies longer impresses the rest and gets respect for their skills. Once they heavy up they cant do this anymore but they will have established their rep as a strong bird.
The pheasants dont seem to do much flying here. No real need to.
The guinea fowl, maybe they are smart but appear rather simple minded and kinda retarded at times. They will fly all right, right into shit in a panic whenever I approach or make eye contact. I swear one of those dumbassea are gonna have a stroke or hit a wall too hard and die!
peace.
