u're plant does not need light 'till it pops out of the soil.
however, it is a good idea to have a light on so that as soon as it sprouts, there will be light for it to start absorbing

Well Ande5657,
In nature seeds sit under snow and ice during the winter slightly under ground. Once spring arrives the snow/ice melts and the ground tempature rises. It's this warmth and moisture that triggers germination not the light.
