If you see TWO balls right by each other, and neither has any white hairs sticking out of the tip, that's definitely a male. It's not always easy to tell when there's just one ball, because that could still be an immature female calyx. Females usually show their sex first, are often smaller than males, and frequently do not have a stalk beneath the calyx. Males show sex later generally (but flower to fruition faster than females), often have a stem or stalk making their calyx stick up, and are generally bigger than females of the same strain. These are not 100 percent reliable indications, however.

I planted 8 seeds not too long ago. The females, of which there were two (pretty bad luck there) showed the white hairs fairly early on. The males took a couple of weeks, maybe even three weeks, before I was absolutely certain they were males (some quicker than others). I was sad too, because the males were so big and bushy and vibrant, it seemed a shame to lop their heads off. *sniff*
