Isaac Hayes Quits 'South Park' By ERIN CARLSON, Associated Press Writer
1 hour, 47 minutes ago

NEW YORK - Isaac Hayes has quit "South Park," where he voices Chef, saying he can no longer stomach its take on religion.

Hayes, who has played the ladies' man/school cook in the animated Comedy Central satire since 1997, said in a statement Monday that he feels a line has been crossed.

"There is a place in this world for satire, but there is a time when satire ends and intolerance and bigotry towards religious beliefs of others begins," the 63-year-old soul singer and outspoken Scientologist said.

"Religious beliefs are sacred to people, and at all times should be respected and honored," he continued. "As a civil rights activist of the past 40 years, I cannot support a show that disrespects those beliefs and practices."

"South Park" co-creator Matt Stone responded sharply in an interview with The Associated Press Monday, saying, "This is 100 percent having to do with his faith of Scientology... He has no problem â?? and he's cashed plenty of checks â?? with our show making fun of Christians."

Last November, "South Park" targeted the Church of Scientology and its celebrity followers, including actors Tom Cruise and John Travolta, in a top-rated episode called "Trapped in the Closet." In the episode, Stan, one of the show's four mischievous fourth graders, is hailed as a reluctant savior by Scientology leaders, while a cartoon Cruise locks himself in a closet and won't come out.

Stone told The AP he and co-creator Trey Parker "never heard a peep out of Isaac in any way until we did Scientology. He wants a different standard for religions other than his own, and to me, that is where intolerance and bigotry begin."

............That sucks. Now who's gonna play chef?

Its true, but Stone and Parker are right; Hayes was fine ripping on everyone else, but when it came time to do it to his religion he backed out.

now they get a new charicter...sucks to lose issac because chef always made me laugh but fuck him.
I've watched South Park for years and nothing is sacred to those fuckers. I'm a bit dissapointed to see him singing about salty balls, going on about freaky sex, christmas poo, blasphemy to jews, christians, hindu, eating food by inserting it anally...yet drawing the line at scientology.
I hope he chookes on his hot salty balls.

I always liked Chef. His songs made me crack up. "Suck on my chocolate salty balls...put em in your mouth and suck em!" :p

South Park at times can be quite crude, but it doesn't bother me, it makes me laugh. Some people like it, some don't, and if you don't, don't bitch about it and ruin our fun.

What gets to me is that he was fine about insulting any other religion, but when it comes to his own he backs out... Coward!

I heard about that, but I didn't know why. I thought of a resolution though. Chef is rarely a main character and usually says the same things, so they should just try to get a few more specific clips from him and reuse old clips. I didn't realise he was a scientologist, but he's being a hypocrite, just as Trey Parker had said. Besides, Scientology isn't even a religion.

Agreed. Coward and Hypocryte are definitely two of the things that come to the top of my mind about him.....

Lmao... yeah, it'd be cool if they got a new chef... voiced by Charlie Murphy. We all know how badass charlie murphy is, dude is fucking hilarious..... I'm thinking Chef has a very distant, ghetto cousin.... chef (voiced by charlie murphy).... maybe that only sounds like a good idea because I'm baked.... but yeah... charlie murphy.

Issac Hayes is as cool as they come, man. (I think, anyway) His scientology peers probably persuaded him to quit the show.

or when the player haters travel back in time, and he gets that shake going. Classic. Charlie should be in more movies. Or the funniest insult I have heard in awhile coming from that bug eye'd stoner with the curls:

"Buck Nasty, you are so dark, when you touch yourself, it's like black on black crime."

I thought the new episode was kind of funny. I just liked how they blamed his religion for being so brainwashed and "crazy." And the part where butters speaks up about his uncle trying to have sex with him.

"Hey, my uncle benny tried that once!"

Kind of funny? The Scientology episode was the best episode in South Park history until this one! I was literally on the floor laughing.

South Park gets revenge on Chef
South Park has exacted revenge on its former star Isaac Hayes by turning his character Chef into a paedophile and seemingly killing him off. The opening episode of the 10th series, screened in the US on Wednesday, appeared to be a satire on Scientology. Hayes, a Scientologist, quit the animated comedy after a different episode ridiculed the religion. In the new show, Chef is brainwashed by the "Super Adventure Club" - thought to be a veiled reference to Scientology. The other characters are angry at "that fruity little club for scrambling his brains".

Patched together

Hayes did not participate in the episode but his lines were apparently patched together from previous recordings. Chef arrives after travelling the world with the Super Adventure Club and repeatedly tells the children he wants to "make sweet love" to them. The children take him to a psychiatrist and then a strip club, where he remembers his love for women and is cured. But he is brainwashed by the Super Adventure Club again - before falling off a bridge and being burned, stabbed and mauled by a lion and a grizzly bear.

'Hurt and confused'

At his funeral, one of the children says: "A lot of us don't agree with the choices the Chef has made in the last few days. "Some of us feel hurt and confused that he seemed to turn his back on us. "But we can't let the events of the past few weeks take away the memories of how Chef made us smile." Soul singer Hayes recently announced he had left the show because of its "intolerance and bigotry toward religious beliefs". But co-creator Matt Stone said: "In 10 years and over 150 episodes of South Park, Isaac never had a problem with the show making fun of Christians, Muslim, Mormons or Jews. "He got a sudden case of religious sensitivity when it was his religion featured on the show." US TV network Comedy Central then pulled a different episode, which mocked Tom Cruise and more explicitly lampooned Scientology. That prompted rumours that Cruise had demanded that the episode be dropped, which were denied by his representatives. Hayes, 63, was admitted to hospital with exhaustion in January.
