How pot came to Mendicino County
Credit to Zap Comics

I was sitting in Central Park one afternoon; stoned to the bone. As I sprawled across the bench I noticed a strangely painted van backing across the parking lot in front of me. When the van was about ten feet from me the back doors swung open and a man in a clown mask pointed the horn of a strange device in my direction. An arm extended from the machine held a small red rubber bulb, above it a sign read
??Squeeze the Bulb?
OK
When I squezed the bulb a cloud of green stars obscured my vision and when I could focus again the van was speeding off. In front of me lay a piece of luminous green paper. When I picked it up I read the glowing red letters,
??Wherever you go the weed will grow.?
It was signed ?? Uncle Leonard?
OK I thought, that was cool.
I was getting a little cottonmouth so I headed off to the candy store on the corner of East 73rd for a soda and some peppermints. Behind me I heard a rustling and when I turned around I saw a pot plant growing behind the bench. How I missed it when I sat down I can??t imagine; it was at least three feet tall.
I grabbed a cream soda at Mrs. Gables candy shop and four ounces of her bulk peppermints. While I paid her we talked about the heat and how the city seemed to magnify the sun. I wished her a good day and walked smack into a six foot Marijuana plant growing out of the sidewalk in front of her storefront. I almost dropped my mints, then ran like hell for my apartment.
After dashing up three flights of wooden stairs I was exhausted and making more noise than the three boys in the apartment next door. Once behind my door I collapsed into the couch and closed my eyes. It was my roommate Freewheeling Franklin that woke me up just a few minutes later. At first I thought I had gone to heaven; I couldn??t see the apartment walls. Everywhere I looked there was green. The plants were growing, swaying, and budding as I watched, the room was a forest of marijuana.
??Wow? said Franklin, ??How did you do this??
I told him the truth, I didn??t know. But I knew I had to get out of town before someone noticed.
??Far out, man. We??ll take the Rambler, I??ll drive for a while.
We drove north first, I was trying to gain some time to think. We camped in a pasture in Vermont the first night. In the morning ten acres of Marijuana had sprung to life around us, and we hurried off just as the cows were making their way out of the milking barns. We headed west.
It was outside Omaha when we broke down. Freewheeling Franklin had to tuck up his hair and work for a week to get the parts while I hid outside of town, in a widening patch of pot that grew larger every day. The only consolation was the rapid flowering of the plants closest to me. I could pluck foot long colas several times a day. Franklin and I would get way stoned after he got back from work. When the parts for the car arrived we packed up and headed out the next morning. By that time the patch was most of a square mile and growing like wild fire.
We drove like maniacs. Outside of Boulder Colorado we stopped for fuel and as we pulled away I could have sworn I could see a green line in the distance, no more than ten minutes behind us. As we made our way through the mountains I tried not to look behind us. It was night when we stopped for gas in Salt Lake City, but I could hear the rustling of the plants just beyond the reach of the lights. In Reno we parked in the back of the resturant when we got breakfast and coffee. By the time we go back to the Rambler it was surrounded by five foot plants and we drove through them to get back on the highway. When we got to the redwoods we slowed down and when we found Potter Valley we knew our travels were over.
Over the years the power seems to have dwindled, but it seems like my children have the power
Sometimes I wonder; Who is Uncle Leonard?
