Ok, so NLXBB, roughly 5 weeks old from seed start, 12/12 cycle for 3 nights so far.
I'm noticing bud like structures starting at internodes that have already sprouted an additional branch while being significantly far away from the rapid growth area at the top of the main stem.
They're hard to spot with the naked eye, as you can see in the picture. It's pretty much impossible to see in the picture, but it's between the small internode stem leaf marked in blue and the nearby young branch sprout. This goes for two plants which both clearly are exhibiting preflower growth.
Now, on one I can't really tell yet, but on another, It looks like a slightly elongated upsidedown teardrop, but no hairs yet. What I'm wondering is: am I just wishful or are these plants pretty clearly showing sex already? I've heard that young female flowers often look male-like, but not the other way around, so I think that it's female.

Correction, upside-down teardrop comment depends on what direction you're looking at the teardrop from :-P The larger portion is at the bottom, the point is at the top. This should be more accurate.

Yes its sometimes hard to determine sex. Both will have nodes but only females will have the pistils.
The nodes are what you have circled in the pic but what I cant see is if it has pistils.
Pistils are white hairs that come out of the node. I think the seed place I buy from has a gender section just a sec I will get you a link to compare with yours.
Here it is and you can also google sexing cannabis plants for some more pics.

How big should I expect the pistils to be when I can definitely sex them? I'm really trying to sex them as soon as possible, I don't want any seeds.

Keep waiting almost there. That is not telling you anything. Males usually grow a bit quicker and have longer node spacing with less THC content. I took a quick look at the pic and it looks like the thc is already starting to show through the leaf so even though we can not say for sure it is looking positive.

Links of lies mistake the eyes to send the voice to others. And others see yes back to me the eyes set in the sockets.

OK, so that one plant still has the bud that looks female, but there's other buds on it that look pretty damn male like. So I'm thinking I either have a herme or a male, maybe I'll know better tomorrow. But how long do I have to weed out the males? I don't wanna suddenly get a whole crapload of pollen dumped into the air

Lol welcome to gardening 101...
Ok First things first what kinda seeds did you start with? Meaning good genetics reputable site or bag seed? If from a rep dealer are they feminized?
If you have buds and seed pollen sacs on the same plant you have a hermie.
If its just pollen sacs you have a male. If just bud female.
The node method is the best and earliest way to determine sex in cannabis plants to my knowledge. If your plants are already budding you should have sexed along time ago to prevent cross pollenation.
If you are running multiple strains and some go male they will cross breed your strains if they are the same strains it will turn all your true females into hermies.
This is good for producing seeds and mixing strains to your liking but not good if you are wanting primo smoke.
If you have some that you suspect are hermies and others you suspect to be true females its best to harvest the hermies and kill off the males(cover with a garbage bag before moving around to prevent breaking open the pollen sacs).

They're Nirvana standard seeds, non-feminized. The hydro shop will have dutchmaster reverse by wednesday, if not tomorrow, so I plan to get some of that :-) My main question, though, is how long do I have to sex? These pre-flowers aren't that old yet.

Look at the FAQ section and you'll see some info on it. Also, google male and female flowers to see pictures. They're very distinct from each other, but very small and hard to see.

thanks man but do you know any ways to make the weed stronger

Strength is primarily strain/genetics related, although it's somewhat environment related. To get the most out of your strain, you would want to use hydroponics. Make sure you read through the full FAQ's board and it'll help you quite a bit. This thread isn't really related to strength, so I would recommend starting a new thread for any questions regarding that.

Length depends on your strains and I havent grown any of that type so I cant say for sure but you have till the pollen balls burst lol...
Use a magnify glass to get a closer look and look at the pic in the link I provided. As soon as you start 12/12 I would say after a week to 2 weeks any strain should show either male or female signs.
I just started a new grow with all fem strains gonna see if they hermie and have some lowryders ordered gonna check out that 8 week from seed to harvest man that maybe good if the smoke is nice.
Lowryders would probably be the only strain where the week-2 week rule doesnt apply since they autoflower it would be much earlier.

Once the balls show up they can begin to burst regardless of the strain within 12 hours at the soonest. Average time is 24 hours.
Auto flowering plants do so because they are crossed with a russian hemp strain called ruderalus. The two strains that come to mind when thinking of these is Alaskan Thunder Fuck and Mighty Mite. Mighty Mite is a popular cannadian outdoor strain.
