View Full Version : White widow first grow

Hi, this is my first attempt at a serious grow. I tried when I was in college on my windowsil but it kinda failed, so a couple of weeks ago I invested in a 250w metal halide lamp. They seem to be growing ok, from what I can tell.

However, the plants are starting to show a little yellowing on the leaves. I looked about and diagnosed this my self as a N deficiancy, so a few days ago I added some to the soil. It hasn't made much of a dif. They're not that yellow yet, I would just like to catch the problem early.

Here is some pics of my room and the plants.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thread can't be deleted...

Plants look good. :) Congratulations!

Do you have fresh air going INto them?

Thanks mate, I kinda have fresh air. I open the cupboard a few times aday to check on them. It would be nigh on impossible to construct an air duct to outside, as the cupboard is pretty much directly in the centre of my house. I also have decent fan blowing 24/7. It's definatly made the stems alot stronger :)

Hmmm.... in the center of your house.... crap....

Try and see what you can do... my plants go "stunted" in growth because I didn't give them fresh air. They didn't wilt and die... or yellow leaves... non of that... but they grew VERY s l o w l y.

Fresh air is a must.

So far, so good ! :)

How about if I take them outside for a few hours aday?

Hello Joe :) I wouldn't worry about taking them outside they are under the MH and that is the best place for them ;)

As for the fresh air, well you have a fan on them so you're doing you're best and they are looking fine. Maybe the stems look a bit thin but they'll grow thicker and the fan will encourage that.

Just try to let them get on with the growing and keep the updates up ;)

By the way Joe are you planning to flower them under the MH as well ? .................. The MH will flower them as it does produce "red light" but the bud weight wiil be down slightly on using a HPS light.
I wouldn't worry though, it's a first grow and once you have sucsessfully completed it, then you can concentrate on the "fine tunning" for you're future grows ;)

i find the opposite to be true, buds tighter with MH. r

Hmmm I find that very strange  , one of the well known effects of using a MH for flowering is looser buds with an overall reduction of around the 10% mark from flowering with an MH in comparision with using an HPS for flowering.
This is something that I have not just read about but I have actually experienced.

Anyway Joe you're the grower love, you listen to the opinions then you make you're own mind up ;)

Thanks for the advice guys and girls, I'm abit low on cash, so I'll probably have to stick with the MHbulb for the meantime. Anyway, Here's the plants this morning. I fertilised the plant's again with Phosphrate fertiliser and the yellow leaves havn't gone. The new leaves are starting to get yellow tips, so I think the problems getting worse. It can't be light burn because the other plant is at exactly the same height, anyone got any idea's?

Anyway here are the pics, look out for the yellow tips on the brandnew leaves on one of the plants.

if the tips are yellowing and becoming dry and withered(dead) then your problem is over watering/salt build up try flushing and begin feeding with half the dosage of ferts u currently use

yeh I thought it could be over watering, I cut down to about once every 3 days or until the top 2 inches or so of soil are dry, however it has not made a difference. I might just give them one more dose of all round fert and leave for a few weeks to sort them selfs out. for some reason i just got a nose bleed whilst typing this...how rare!

Plants grown with hps light only, tend to grow tall and thin. That means a smaller harvest. Plants grown with mh light only, tend to take longer to flower but the harvest will be larger. If you were to only use one type of light, metal halide is suggested. Some growers say they prefer hps if only given the choice of using one type of light, so this is something you will have to decide by experimenting.
You can't use a standard high pressure sodium bulb in a metal halide fixture, but you can use a metal halide bulb in a high pressure sodium fixture of the same wattage. I didn't think this was possible till several years ago when someone trusted told me it would work. I have used hps bulbs in mh fixtures, whenever needed arises, ever since

A 250 watt fixture will supply enough light to cover a 2.5 foot by 2.5 foot grow area. (6 plants or less)
A 400 watt fixture will supply enough light to cover a 4 foot by 4 foot grow area. (12 plants or less)
A 600 watt fixture will supply enough light to cover a 5 foot by 5 foot grow area. (18 plants or less)
A 1000 watt fixture will supply enough light to cover a 7 foot by 7 foot grow area. (30 plants or less)

Well, it's been a while since I've updated, as I lost my camera. I bought a new one so here are the plants today. They've been flowering for about 6 weeks or so, not as much bud as I expected, but hey, it's my first time and i've made mistakes that i'll learn from. By the way, I invested in a 400w HPS, seems to have bucked them up abit :)

Edit: it seems i have misjudged how long i've had the plants for. I just looked at my first post on the 27th feb which means they're only about 2 months old, so they can't have been flowering for 6 weeks. How long would you estimate they have left til harvest? a few of the hairs are brown now.

looks like you are in early-mid flowering stage, I would say at least another 3-4 weeks to go, but dont listen to me, go by the trich colors, you want 50% cloudy 50% amber trichs

Very nice!

When it comes to the lighting question, I agree w/ Mand. MH fer veg and HPS fer bloom. However, to each their own.

What's yer yield like? How's she smoke?
I was gonna try ta gro WW until I moved and stopped altogether.
Enjoy!
