Cheney accidentally shoots hunting partner

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US Vice President Dick Cheney accidentally shot and wounded a 78-year-old man while the two of them were hunting on a ranch in South Texas, Cheney's office said.


Cheney spokeswoman Lea Anne McBride confirmed a news account that Cheney had turned to shoot quail that had just been flushed but instead peppered Harry Whittington with shotgun pellets, striking one side of his body.

The incident occurred around 5:30 pm (2330 GMT) on Saturday at the Armstrong Ranch, where the vice president is a frequent visitor, according to an eyewitness account in the local Corpus Christi Caller-Times newspaper.


Katharine Armstrong, owner of the ranch, said Whittington was taken to Christus Spohn Hospital Memorial by ambulance, the newspaper reported.

Armstrong said Cheney, 65, had not noticed that Whittington had approached him from behind. "Nobody wants this to happen, but it does," she told the Caller-Times.

Armstrong said the vice president's secret service security detail had tended to the wounded man, according to the newspaper.

"The vice president this afternoon visited with Mister Whittington," said McBride, who vouched for the report but would not say whether their meeting had taken place at the hospital.

Cheney's office did not disclose the incident when it took place.

CNN television, citing a witness, said that Whittington had "never lost consciousness."

The wounded man was "doing well and in stable condition," hospital spokesman Peter Banko told CNN.

The vice president would return to Washington later Sunday, NBC News reported.

Whittington, an attorney, gave the maximum 2,000 dollars to the 2004 reelection campaign of Cheney and US President George W. Bush, according to the Center for Responsive Politics non-profit organization.

In January 2004, a Cheney duck-hunting trip in Louisiana with US Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia drew accusations of impropriety because the high court was set to hear a case involving the vice president's energy task force.

In late 2003, Cheney drew criticism for a pheasant hunt at an exclusive club in Pennsylvania, when he reportedly shot 70 of the birds, because of a news report that they had been released from nets.

Exactly, if you get seperated from your hunting partners, (in this case it was to retrieve a bird from the tall grass) when you rejoin the group you announce yourself so everyone knows where you are. A friend of mine got peppered in almost the exact same scenario because he didn't let everyone know where he was. I know a guy who peppered a partner because the guy ducked behind some bushes. If he had been standing in plain sight it wouldn't have happened. I announce myself even in short grass and I've never been peppered. :D

TIP: Avoid novelty hats with feathers or stuffed antlers while hunting! :D

Ummmm NO, that's not what happened. The bird was inbetween Cheney and Whittington and he was hidden from sight by tall grass. When Cheney fired at the bird(s) the pellets kept going, through the grass, into Harry. Cheney never saw him because of the tall grass, that's why Harry was supposed to announce himself when rejoining the group.

Oh, I fully admit that I'm here for my own entertainment and I laugh my ass off. Be glad that I've been pulling my punches, so to speak, and intentionally avoiding the politics forum. Ummmm NO, that's not what happened. The bird was inbetween Cheney and Whittington and he was hidden from sight by tall grass. When Cheney fired at the bird(s) the pellets kept going, through the grass, into Harry. Cheney never saw him because of the tall grass, that's why Harry was supposed to announce himself when rejoining the group.

Did YOU read the whole thread? I posted a link to a yahoo post that had an eyewitness saying that exact thing. She owns the ranch and was the one that reported it to the local paper.

Whittington shot a bird and went to look for it in the tall grass, while Cheney and the third hunter walked to another spot and discovered a second covey.

Whittington "came up from behind the vice president and the other hunter and didn't signal them or indicate to them or announce himself," Armstrong said.

"The vice president didn't see him," she continued. "The covey flushed and the vice president picked out a bird and was following it and shot. And by god, Harry was in the line of fire and got peppered pretty good."

Don't get me wrong, I don't doubt the plausibility of the situation the eyewitness described. All I'm questioning is whether or not that is what actually happened in this particular instance. Naturally, if asked kindly by the Secret Service to not tell the media the truth about the situation--whatever that truth may be--one would generally comply.

All I mean to say is that it strikes me as suspect that a gun accident involving the Vice President as the shooter is so neatly explained a way in a manner removing all blame from the VP. As I have never gone quail hunting, I don't know about the relative likelihood of this particular gunshot scenario compared to others, but it seems odd to me that the VP is relieved of all blame so easily-- especially when the Vice President's office waited a day to disclose this information. If the VP was really so blameless, what took them so long?

While the actions of Whittington may have been irresponsible, it also seems to me that someone holding a loaded shotgun should have the burden of being oriented in his surroundings, especially in relation to the other members of his party. It seems irresponsible to shoot a shotgun in any direction if you don't know where one member of your hunting party is.

The sites I've read so far just say "experienced" and describe him as "He's a great shot. He's very safety conscious. The 21-year-old Lafayette man was taken to the hospital Monday night after his girlfriend accidentally shot him while they were trailing a raccoon that had been preying on chickens on his family's property.

All of you in the media have been very patient in waiting for me to make my appearance here. I hope you understand. Iâ??m sorry I delayed you, but I know your role is to get the news out to the public. I compliment you on what youâ??ve done. Iâ??ve read and seen many of your reports and I know your job isnâ??t easy. I regret that I couldnâ??t have been here earlier so you could see what a lucky person I am.

For many years my family has been friends with the Armstrongs down in Kenedy County. We have visited with them for over 25 years and have had some wonderful trips and visits â?? pleasant memories that we cherish forever. However, this past weekend encompassed all of us in a cloud of misfortune and sadness that is not easy to explain â?? especially to those who are not familiar with the great sport of quail hunting.

We all assume certain risks in whatever we do, whatever activities we pursue. And regardless of how experienced, careful and dedicated we are, accidents do and will happen â?? and thatâ??s what happened last Friday.

I am very grateful and want to thank all the people that remembered me in their prayers and the kindness you have extend to my family thatâ??s been here this week.

My family and I are deeply sorry for all that vice president Cheney has had to go through this past week. It was 18 hours before it was released and 4 days before Mr. Cheney gave his interview...just imo he IS our VP and should have stepped up sooner not because it is an issue of "national security" but because he is our VP...it's like our right to know what is going on with our countrys leaders was denied....would it have been handled differently if it had been Mr. Cheney was the one shot instead of the being the one that shot Mr.Whittington accidently?
