I laid back to meditate today
and stretched my arms out, palms up
waiting for the nails to drive home
I'm too neurotic to let go
and I close my eyes
I feel the vibration of my neighbors
pounding down their stairway
I file my thoughts away
sorting through the catalogue of my life
I close my eyes
and start to feel the deep thrum of the earth
my heart slows rhythm to match
I feel millions of other hearts drumming that same primal beat
keeping time together
I am a member of this race.
I may walk off the sidewalk, in the gutter
my stride may not match
but my heart feels the same tidal pull
the same instinctive pulse of the earth crashing through my arteries
giving cadence to my life
I am a member of this race.
