You know what? You're right. All these years I've been trying to look for a reason to believe in the Bible, and now I have it. I don't need any evidence or logical arguments, I should believe in it because you told me to with the caps lock button down. Why didn't I see it before?
Seriously though, isn't Christianity weird? As Bill Hicks put it, it all boils down to the idea that "eternal suffering awaits anyone who questions God's infinite love".

If God cares so much whether or not I believe in him, why doesn't he just show himself? Surely he must understand that I'm the kind of guy who likes evidence before believing in something. He can't punish me for that, can he? Because if he does, he's an asshole. I'm sorry, but I just can't make myself believe in something I don't have any evidence for. I don't see why that intolerant God asshole should send me to eternal damnation because of that.

I didn't say he will punishe anyone. God do not show /him/her/itself for who knows what reason. Maybe God wants you to discover him on your own. And as far as hell goes, I don't believe in it. You should know that cuz you read my other posts. Stop taking certin things so literal. The Bible is only a book after all made by man. Find God on your own.

Well you don't have to if you don't want to, I don't really care weither you do or not, its your life. I just choose to look for a meaning. The point of my living. I do not accept that we live to die. Not looking for something cuz it has no proof is closed minded. Explorers found North America whent hey thought the world was flat. They took a chance of falling off the edge and look what they found. A little enlightenment of the world around them. They could have been like you and choose not to look for riches and hold back on exploring because of death by falling off the edge but they didn't. They had no proof of that land but they found it.
Oneironaut
12-10-2005, 10:20 PM
Yeah, but North America is a real thing that they could sail to. God is an abstract concept, that apparently has no influence upon what I can observe with my senses. How then, is it possible to obtain any information about it? Please tell me how you got your information about it, without making shit up or copying shit other people made up.

You can consider it whatever you would like. There was no winner in my mind. You never changed my views and I never changed yours.
I said die as a way to find out, not a treath (making sure you knew that). If nothing happenes after you die and thats all, then way to go you were right, but if you are reborn or taken by God then I was right. We will never know while we live.

I hope you are right and there is an afterlife, but I just can't see how that could be, given the fact that it seems the mind is just a product of the brain. We can track blood flow in the brain during cognitive tasks, and examine what cognitive functions are damaged when certain parts of the brain are injured. We notice how people's behavior changes dramatically when certain chemicals interact with the brain. We can correlate different types of brain waves with different modes of consciousness. All this paints a pretty clear picture: consciousness is dependent upon the brain, and we can even pick out what elements of consciousness are dependent upon what areas of the brain. When one part of my brain is damaged, I forget how to speak. When another part is damaged, I can't recognize faces. When a different part is damaged, I can't remember anything before the injury. So what happens when it's all damaged, and the whole brain ceases to function and begins decomposing? The only logical conclusion that I can find is that all these cognitive processes end and the phenomenon known as consciousness does too. It will be just like the billions of years before you were born.

The afterlife is a tricky thing. You do not know weither their is one or not till you expecience death. But in this sence we will never know. If their is no after life we will not be able to say "I was wrong" cuz were dead. You said before that I could not see the idea of no God and of God but I can. Before, I saw it that God never existed because I thought God was an invention to help people deal with death. It is easyer to think there is more after life then rottin' in the ground. I changed my beliefs a while back cuz...well I wouldn't be able to tell you why because I still do not know. I fear death, I admit it, but I see God as more then a place to go after this life. I can't fully explain it because I find it hard to put some of my beliefs in words that can be understood.
Oneironaut
12-10-2005, 11:16 PM
That's a pretty sure sign that you believe in God for emotional and psychological reasons rather than logical ones. If you had a logical argument, you would present it and get the whole thing over with. But you don't. You just find the idea comforting that there's some fatherly figure looking over you and taking care of you. I understand that. I used to believe in God when I was a kid. But there just isn't any reason to believe it is so.
MudFu
12-10-2005, 11:34 PM
I told you before I don't use logic with my beliefs. Logic will hold them down. Yes I like the idea of having more but I do not think God watchs me and takes care of me. I have reasons for my beliefs but they are ot logical in a physical sence. You would dismiss them without a little thought on them.
Oneironaut
12-10-2005, 11:45 PM
Well of course. How can you believe something which isn't logical? That just flies in the face of logic. I couldn't conceive of doing such a thing. Illogical things just don't fit into my brain. I can't get myself to believe 2 + 2 = 5 no matter how hard I try. How do you do it?
If it's not based on logic, what is it based on then? I think the answer is pretty clear. You're pretending the world is a certain way because you want it to be that way. Nobody ever comes up with faiths which disagree with the way they want the world to look.
MudFu
12-10-2005, 11:51 PM
Well I guess you can only believe something on either logic or emotion, is there really any other way?. No matter, I much rather be ruled by emotion then logic. I seem many people become dull and drear because they only see logic of something. That's why you have to have the courage to say "I don't know", instead of pretending you have the answers. We currently don't have the ability to use logic to explain everything, but what it can't explain is simply beyond the bounds of the knowable. How can you know something without using logic to figure it out? By making shit up and convincing yourself it's true, or as you call it, "faith".

But how can you take any idea seriously which isn't based on logic? Where do such ideas come from? Only ideas which can be tested can be deemed to be true. I can't even comprehend trying to understand things beyond the bounds of logic. How do you get there? What is there to say about it, and how can you possibly know you're right? Do you just have to guess and hope your guesses are right?

Oneironaut, your having to much trouble with this. You shouldn't try to understand then. You need logic in your life, thats fine, but not everyone do need logic. Anyways, everything starts as an idea but then becomes tested to see if it is true, or logical. 1+1=2 started as an idea but when they checked to make sure that is the only outcome then it becomes logic. Thats why you do not see my 11 answer a possible outcome, you are ment to see logic only. You never know your right until the end. You do not know for sure if your right because you can not disprove our ideas, as we can not prove them.

That is the most non-sensical post I've read... 1+1=2 didn't start out as an idea. One guy had one apple, another guy had one apple, together they had 2 apples... That's how it got started... Don't try to make things "mysterious" and "unexplainable" just because it suits your purpose.
But then again, that's religion's trick, isn't it? When we start to ask questions that might unsettle any religious person, it always comes down to "it's unexplainale" or "it's a mystery" or "Leave your logic at the door, you only need faith"
MudFu

One has an apple another person brings another apple, the guy thought hey is this 2 apples? then he counted and yes it was. It was tested so it is logical. Nothing mysterious about it. I never said it was cosmic or anything. Your the one who changes things to fit your purpose.

I don't know, does God(dess) really have two X chromosomes? And a vagina? And fallopian tubes, and all that? That would make it seem as if God was capable of reproduction, that some male God could come by and they could make a new baby God. But then we get into the realm of polytheism, which Christians never ever ever are allowed to consider under any circumstances as dictated by the First Commandment (except the Holy Trinity of course, when God turns into three gods for some reason).

Yeah, religion is just as rife with hypocrisy as politics is. The "Trinity" is the idea that God is one entity, but is also at the same time three separate entities, which are all really the same, but different. I don't get how these people cram such illogical ideas into their heads, but they really do believe this. It's almost Orwellian. War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength. ahh... well... they're close...

spirits can seperate, like how single celled organisms reproduce, and create individual entities, but they are still within the mind, which could arguably be god.
but the mind does not retain a consciousness of it's own, it just houses infinite thought. egos are like water mollecules, they just flow in an empty sea of nothingness, lacking consciousness.
when an ego enters the mind, they become. they gain awareness. they instantly become non-nothingness, due to their observation of thoughts.
with thought, there cannot be nothing, without thought there cannot be anything.

Good Point!
Amen is an alternate spelling for Amun, an Egyptian God.
It is thought that the word crept into Hebrew when the Egyptians ruled that the area Israel now occupies back around 1500 BCE. The same word shows up in a few other languages in the region and has much the same usage.
Both the Christins and Muslims co-opted it from the Jews when they began their religions.
Amen (Amun, Amon, Yimen; GR Zeus-Ammon, Jupiter-Ammon) - "The Hidden One," Amen is "King of the Netjeru," a major Name of Netjer in Uaset (Thebes) in Upper Kemet. The "Lord to the Limit" who created all things (see Nun, Tem, Ra and Ptah entries for other Creator Names), Amen the lord of the hidden wind eventually syncretised with the royal cult of Ra to emerge as Amen-Ra in the Middle Kingdom. Successions of Theban rulers would propel Amen's fame to national and eventually international status; even Alexander the Great sought Amen's blessing before declaring himself Kemet's ruler. It is possible that the conception of Amen influenced conceptions of the Judaic/Hebraic God (YHVH) as well as those of Greek Zeus and Roman Jupiter; the Romans declared Jupiter and Amen to be the same divinity. Amen is generally depicted as a man wearing a tall golden plumed crown and a red and white pleated skirt; infrequently He is also shown as a ram with curled-down horns (not to be confused with the ram representing Khnum), or a ram-headed man.

God has made himself obvious to everyone, but those who wish to remain in their sin will never see it as God, only as the abyss, the mystery, the "'not-yet"-answered"
If you believe in humanity, than look around you. Look at the harm that we do to one another every day in the tiniest miniscule ways. I mean that it's in us to live life like this even towards friends and family, and yet we have so much faith in our species as being able to one day conquer life and all it's questions...to better ourselves through our own means...to evolve.
It's a sinking ship, and unless you wish to see the truth that no bad comes from God and all bad comes from us, than any faith in yourself will be faith in foolishness. How can we blame God if God by definition alone is complete goodness?

spirits are MIND beings, souls are product of THOUGHTS.
it is ONLY LOGICAL to assume that if you can think it, it must be real somewhere somehow, given what the nature of spirits ARE! the logical conclusion is that spirits are consciousness, with the capacity of infinity.
