View Full Version : Attempting Hydro soon & need help.
Hey everyone
I am new to the hydroponics growing area and I am intreeged to learn more as I start panning for my new grow come dec/jan.
I want to grow minimum 2 plants.
If I had a 5gal rubbermaid bucket and cut 2 holes in the lid and placed net pots in there, would that work?
Im not neccisarly sure what the water would be in there, would that be the res?
Any help needed is truely!
Plus cost is limited , Im going to averaging 700$ CDN a paycheck very soon and need to keep some money for my new truck & skidoo :)
After doing some research, I have found the following that I am going to purchase upon pay check.
System :

If I need a res tank, Ill probably be using a 5gal bucket and might upgrade as I need too.

Hey Joel,
For $35, it looks super good. I was going to tell you to build it your self, but honestly, I think that it's a good deal for $35. Just be carefull you don't get screwed on the S&H.
Remember that to do hydro correctly, you should take into account that you need to buy:
TDS/ppm/EC/pH/temp meters
The 5 gallon rez might work... but, I think that you should run it as it is, and if need be, then you intall the 5 gallon bucket.
:) Good to see you're starting!!! :)

Joel, I buy from the same place. Nice peeps and they get it out to you in good time. They have a reg website. Go for the 6 plant drip system almost the same, under 60 bucks delivered. Landmsales.com. You can still put an air stone in to help I did. I just ordered 6 , 1/4 inch cut offs so I can hook up a hose to the fitting on the end and let the pump empty the system for me. A little easier to change water.

Man, after going thru all the start-up costs and systems, I can tell you that you can grow in the cheapest set-up as well as a monster system! If you are going 1-2 plants, then without a doubt you can build 2 bubblers for under 25 dollars...jmho.lw
and grow very well in these uunits

Hey guys.
Turtle420 : Thanks for the reminder. After spending some time trying to find these items, I finally have.
pH EC TDS Meter (1) http://www.insidesun.com/index.php?action=item&id=738&prevaction=category&previd=7&prevstart=0
If you know of any other cheaper pH EC TDS meters please do tell me because that is very expensive.
Locnar : Awesome man, I plan on growing 3 plants, how much do you think I could yield?
Latewood : I am intrested in hearing more upon your ideas or past threads , I plan on growing 3, can I do that with still a 25$ budget?
As for that thanks for all of your replies and I am hoping to see more :)

Joel,
This is the one I've got J,
Hanna Gro'Chek Continuous pH/TDS/EC/Temp @
http://www.bghydro.com/BGH/itemdesc.asp?ic=TEMCOHACL2&eq=&Tp=
I still haven't used it, so I'm unsure of its performance. But I think it'll work out fine. $130
As to latewood's PVC skills... he can help you alot... but keep in mind that latewood has a psychic ability to cut, thread, join, seal and setup PVC systems with his mental powers... LOL! Have you seen his setup?! Boy... what would I give to clean my hands in his bathroom sink!
Thanks turtle.
I saw one of latewoods previous threads a while back and it was amazing, I know hes a hydro master, as is zandor and many others on this site. I hope to learn from the best to produce hopefully minimum pound /plant.

if your looking for a pound a plant your going to need some awsome light. Maybe 2 1000 watt lights. I have had a 400 watt and got 4 oz's of northern lights with just nutes no additives. It's all about lights and reflection. I am learning, when you go inside you grow more small plants than one big tree. Your lights only light 1/3rd of the plants. that's the top canopy. I grew 3 foot plants but only got good bud off the tops. Same thing this grow but I switched to a 1000 watt for the last 2 weeks of flowering. The next grow will start flowering at 5 nodes, that's 5 sets of good leaves. About 6 to 8 inches. When you go into flowering the plants grow like mad and more than double in size. With the 1000 watt I hope to get 2 to 3 oz's a plant. with 6 plants that's 12 to 18 oz's I hope.
I guess I set my goal too high ?
Im worried to keep my temp down around 60-70 since there has been many busts lately. As for the lights, I am in search of a 500w MH and a 500w HPS.

bigger lights, bigger buds...I will post a thread this weekend with the directions for bubbler...it is for a cloning project that I have successfully completed, so to speak, but I showed how I put the system together, for all of you who don't have one...
meanwhile here is a shopping list, for each bubbler you want: 1st from wally's...
1-10 gallon/17qt. sterlite tote, as dark a color as possible...$3.50
1 aqua source dual airpump...$8.00
2 airstones or 5" bubble rails...$.88 or $3.00
and you might want one of those floating aquarium thermometers...about a buck
black plastic spray paint or duct tape black/2 wraps-gray/3 wraps to light-proof your res. $ 10.00 This keeps algae growth to a minimum...
tube of aquarium sealant(optional $5.00)
Now at hopot, you need;
black 1/4" airline...you might be able to find this in garden section of wally's with a sprinkler or drip system starter kit.$5-7.00
common plastic sink drain(optional) found in kitchen area, not plumbing. $5.00
from hydro supply you need; 12 netpots $5-7.00...hydroton $10.00...and a nutrient...I recommend AN or GH 3- part...about 25 bucks for the set, although there are good 1 part and 2 part programs out there...and liquid karma for all-in-one additive(optional) $20.00 a qt. or superthrive.. want to try AN's Iguana juice grow/bloom 1 part from Advanced Nutrients when I get the extra cash...I'll check back later and see if you have any more question's about this...lw :smokin:
Latewood , Im pretty sure there isnt a hydro shop in the town I live in, any good site recommondation?
Btw , looking forward to your thread!

Depending on which coast or border you live nearest has something to do with my recommendation. :) And, Remember...BE DISCREET don't put the store clerks at risk or yourself...Do Not say the 'M' word!!! they do not want to know that they are participating in a conspiracy with you to grow that schtuff that has to do with the 'M' word. :p with that said.
Cali...
Green Coast hydro/gchydro is great...good people, have had a few discussions about Advanced Nutrients, they are AN experts. Funny thing though. they are the ones that told me to use Liquid Karma, instead of B-52. that's another story. Mike is one of my mates there
Bghydro for light ballasts and electrical wiring advice...I bought my 1000w
ballast, mogul base, from them and they walked me through wiring it. (Actually, it is real easy to do, once you have the ballast in front of you)...I did a step-by-step that Zandor put in growfaqs; thanks to them...Dave I think, from S. Africa helped me out
Up north...Growco/4hydroponics.com great people and service and prices...
They do not carry Advanced Nutrients (old school store)...But, they have the best hydro supply catalog I've ever seen and will send you one with your order
They have ...EVVVEERRRRYYYYthing...it's like the old sears christmas catalog.
the cool thing about growco is that the catalog allows you to visualize what you are always reading about in these forums...for instance, If Zandor says...Well I use a greenair controller...such and such...then you look it up, find a picture, a description of what it does, and a price! you learn something and get a picture of it in your head, now you can plan ahead to your system and room design....whheeeewwwww, I'm :stoned: long winded/fingered
I buy my lamps...hortilux, sunmaster from Jay...up there...If Jay had advanced
nutes, I would probably buy everything from him.
I pretty much buy from these 3 hydro dealers or I find things like my new 6' light mover on ebay...I have found alot of my AN additives on ebay...
My nute regimen would cost about 200 bucks to start-up in qts./liters
but I have found some great deals...like calmag and B-52 both bottles under 20 bucks...that's over 1/2 off...I got my voodoo juice for about 25 bucks and it sells for 70 bucks...hope this helps.lw :smokin:
Hey latewood
Awesome information man, will check it out. I did some research on the lighting from bghydro and I have decided to go the extra length to get the 1000w HPS sunmaster cool.
http://www.bghydro.com/BGH/customkititems.asp?kc=HLHPS10SC&eq=
I have decided to pick up some Mylar sheeting to put up along my grow room walls from 4hydroponics.com
http://4hydroponics.com/grow_room/mylar.asp
As for my odor control I plan on TRYING to get enough money to get this air purifyer.

Stuff looks good...I took the liberty of clicking on the hortilux bulb upgrade, so you could look at it...that is what Z uses 2-3 of them...and I've had one now for about 6 weeks...you definitely see a difference in your produce with that 1000w eye hortilux. It has the enhanced blue spectrum, so it is better for veg than the standard bulb, and you can use it all the way thru.lw
OK, I am going to post my ass off today and catch up about 5 threads I've got going or started and you can see all my little experiments.later
Awesome latewood, I will keep in search of some bulbs and some other stuff.
I will post them later.
