A FORMER French ambassador to Australia has been taken into custody as part of an investigation into suspected irregularities in the Iraq oil-for-food program.

Jean-Bernard Merimee, 68, who was posted to Australia in the 1980s, was France's permanent representative to the United Nations Security Council from 1991 to 1995 and ambassador to Italy from 1995 to 1998.

Mr Merimee, who was taken into custody on Monday, is suspected of receiving oil vouchers from Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein's regime.

The French mission to the UN said it would co-operate fully with the investigation. A spokesman said the mission's papers from Mr Merimee's time at the UN had been sent to the national archives in Paris long ago, and there had been no request so far to meet staff in New York.

Ten French officials and business leaders â?? including a former adviser to former interior minister Charles Pasqua â?? are suspected of receiving oil allocations as kickbacks from Saddam's regime.

The oil-for-food program from 1996 to 2003 provided food, medical supplies and other humanitarian goods for millions of Iraqis trying to cope with UN sanctions imposed after Iraq's 1990 invasion of Kuwait.
