It's getting really annoying, I don't know if all you have noticed, but it seems more and more commercials are all using rap. All the fast food places, and clothing lines, and now as I just saw, even a milk commercial, they're all full of rap music. seems there's an excellerating number of companies all using this crappy music (crappy to my ears, don't get all worked up rap people! :p ) , I'm starting to get mighty tired of listening to nothing but crappy rap during commercial breaks. what do you think?

rock and roll is on once in a while, rap is on something around 80% now.

and I don't have a mute for my t.v. (old one in my room)

I dislike most rap since it promotes senseless violence, sexism, and the use of material goods or "bling" as a status symbol. These people claim to represent the impoverished ghettoes yet live it up in their mansions with their millions of dollars (which could easily be used to improve the conditions of those impoverished ghettoes, by the way).

Also, in general, rap songs don't have much of a real constructive message to express to its listeners. A lot of it is simply praise of intoxication, prostitution and material wealth. When they do try to address a real issue that has some significance, for instance the impoverishment of the ghettoes they claim to represent, they will only try to portray how bad things are while completely ignoring potential solutions people could take to fix the problem. Even if they had something thoughtful and insightful to say, the lyrics are spit out so fast that the listener has almost no time to reflect on it.

I have found a few exceptions to these general trends, but they tend to be bands which mix rap with some other music form, like Rage Against the Machine (rap/metal) and the Kottonmouth Kings (rap/punk).

Rage Against the Machine is probably the best hard rock band that ever was.

As for rap in commercials, all you need to do is put 2 and 2 together. Rap sells, corporations flock to money like flies on shit so of course they would incorporate rap into commercials. i blame corporations for pimping out rap and turning into the crap it is now which is termed by people like myself as 'commercial rap'. there's a bustling underground for hiphop full of all different sorts of genres and sounds.

as a matter of fact, outside the U.S., some hiphop stations play jay-z songs alongside mr. lif, MF DOOM, immortal technique and other underground (independent) artists.

I really despise new rap, too preppy and fake. All classic rap and hip-hop is what I like, something with an actual beat. The whole urban lifestyle was interesting to me, but i'm not gonna go out of my way to dress like a stupid looking white moron.

even though I don't like any rap, I do agree with you that there are talented rap artists (mainly back in the day).

rap just never did anything for me because most of what I've heard is the artist picks one beat, then just plays it and talks till the end, no change or anything.

My friends and i were talking about this the other day. The problem with rap nowadays is that its become so mind-numbed that a man can yell out his name(Mike Jones) or say 8 simple repeated sayings(Lil Jon) and become the richest, most sensational thing to hit the music scene because its "new" to us.

Listen to what i call "smart rap" and a lot of people might like it. Immortal Technique is a good one along with Mos Def. Also listen to rappers with a good beat and that are fresh. I know theres a lot of resentment towards Kanye West right now, but his music is VERY good. Just listening to an intelligent guy such as him or Pharoe Monche is a relief. But none of this "throw it up, shoot em up, do coke, and fuck hoes then kill them. It's outdated and not to mention stupid.

As much as i'm not in to rap anymore I have to disagree, try reading the lyrics along to about %80 of Tupac's songs.

Anyway, I don't watch that much TV. And when I do watch TV I always hit the mute button when the commercials come on. I suggest everyone else does too.

Mainstream rap is lame and it sold out the art form. I remember back when the mainstream hated rap. Now since the rich kids like it your starting to see it everywhere. If the artist has a RIAA record label I don't support them.

Well...ok...i have been listening to rap since i was 3. Now im 18 and i still listen to it...just not todays bullshit.

Let me school you guys about rap for a sec. There are 3 types of rap. Westcoast, Eastcoast, and Southern.
Really these 3 types are named like that obviously because of where the rap comes from...but most importantly...how it sounds.

Westcoast(all i listen to): Usually talks about gangster shit...smoking weed (cause cali has some good ass weed)...and girls. Most westcoast rap has beats that are derived somewhat from funk or oldschool RnB....for example Nate Dogg and Warren G invented "G-Funk" which stands for Gangsta Funk.

If you listen to a song like "Regulators" by Warren G and Nate Dogg, or
"Aint no Fun" (really fun to listen to) by Snoop Dogg. You can tell that the beats are really dancable unlike beats from the South and East.
These guys may not be gangstas anymore...but thats where they came from...so they will let people know that. And in LA...these gangs are real...i dont know if any of you live in LA (I do)...but a lot of the gangs that these "rappers" talk about are real. LA is a city filled with gangs and crime...so when I hear rap music about it...i can easily relate to what they are talking about...even though im not in a gang myself.

Now Eastcoast rap is more about lyrical MC's dishin out some crazy play-on-words. Their beats are more strict and basic because the lyrical side is what stands out. In my opinion...some of it is good...like Nas is crazy...Mos Def...but most of it is boring because listening to lyrics all day without having anything to make you move to it can get lame fast. Eastcoast talks more about their money...going to parties...their fame (cars, bling) etc...which gets old. Now they try to talk about gangsta shit which is sad because its just a bunch of wannabes. I know this because East Coast's (New York) crime is usually based on the Mob. LA is gangs, Newyork is the mob. And i know...none of these eastcoast rappers are in the mob.

Southern rap usually involves hard hitting beats that make huge black chicks wanna move around like they are having a spasm attack. This beat usually is accompanied by a Lil Jon type voice yelling and saying bullshit words that they made up over and over again. I guess its ok for the clubs...but it still sucks in my opinion. What sucks even more is that this is the shit that is selling right now...which makes me understand why most of you dont like rap.

The problem is you need to listen to the right stuff.....unless you are against that "A lot of it is simply praise of intoxication"...(intoxication is awesome...thats why im on this forum).

Sorry for the long read...if you dont read it ok...stay with a narrowmind about rap (not all of you).....if you do read it...hopefully you'll pick up some dope Westcoast shit.

"Aint No Fun" by Snoop Dogg, Nate Dogg, and Kurupt, and Warren G is about hoes...but that shit is fun as fuck to listen to.

"Well, if Kurupt gave a fuck about a bitch I'd always be broke
I'd never have no motherfuckin indo to smoke
I gets loced and looney, bitch you can't Do Me
Do we like BBD, you hoochie groupie?
I have no love for hoes
That's somethin I learned in the pound
so how the fuck am I supposed
to pay this hoe, just to lay this hoe
I know the pussy's mines, I'ma fuck a couple more times
And then I'm through with it, there's nothing else to do with it
Pass it to the homie, now you hit it
Cause she ain't nuthin but a bitch to me
And y'all know, that bitches ain't shit to me
i gives a fuck, why don't y'all pay attention
Approach it with a different proposition, I'm Kurupt
Hoe, you'll never be my only one, trick ass beeeitch!"

hahahaha...I can listen to this shit and blaze all night long.

any idiot can rhyme, it takes a musician to make music! Rap is even more irritating than disco. I went skating a little while back and was digusted. It was all rap crap and the commercials today are rediculously annoying.
I like my music loud, no doubt, but I like MUSIC, rap is just loud noise that grates under the skin.

Dude...isnt it obvious?
Crap like mcdonalds and burger king, crappy clothes for retarded high prices like "phatpharm" or wahtever, so poorly made, and kinda trashy style wise. I mean a pair of sweat pants made in india they want more then the last Boss shirt I bought at Renfrew made in Italy?!?!?
They are selling to idiots, and apparently in controll groups the 14-24 year old market has a lucratively large number them :) "HAVE A BURGER FOR BREAKFAST!!" qoute-Burger King

Indeed, rap takes little talent, but that's how it started out in the beginning anyway, they couldn't afford instruments, and their clothes are baggy cause that's what they can afford.

Now looking poor is the latest and most painful trend nowadays. The so called insult, "gay" follows along with these people.

I definitely see rock or any other category of music takes five times as much talent than people shouting and crappy drumming, but it can be fun to listen to sometimes, just for something new, I can't listen to the same rock my whole life.
