Bush Pledges Federal Role in Rebuilding Gulf Coast

In 1346, the Black Plague wipes out half (yes HALF) of Europes population, yet a few years later the age of exploration begins and Europe becomes the superpower of the world. 1918, WW1, northern France, Belgium lie in ruins. WW2, Germany and Japan are literally wiped off the face of the Earth, now look where the biggest international companies are based.

Now, let's rebuild New Orleans and other towns around the Gulf coast and it's the biggest reconstruction project the world has ever seen.

I don't know about anyone else, but my problem stems from W's lack of any real logic.

He's stated that he won't consider raising taxes to offset some of the reconstruction costs. So that only leaves two options: budget cuts or further deficit spending.

Budget cuts aren't the answer as those cuts would most likely come from programs designed to aid the poor, since those are the cuts the GOP always wants. It would be the height of hypocrisy to help New Orlean's poor at the expense of those in the rest of America. Maybe even W. can see that.

Deficit spending is something I've never understood from this so-called conservative. It makes no sense, but I don't think W. cares; it won't be his problem when the effects start to roll in - Bush 41's recession was a product of Reagan-era deficit spending.

This president hasn't had a balanced budget since 2001. You can blame that on whatever you want, but the fact remains we've sunk further into debt than ever before. W's answers to this problem have been tax cuts, tax cuts and more tax cuts. To top it off, costs such as those incurred from fighting the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the reconstruction of Iraq aren't folded into the federal budget so it's tough to know exactly how big the deficit really is except that it's obviously bigger than the OMB reports. Katrina costs will no doubt not find their way into the federal budget either.

I also have a problem in that W. wants to give more tax cuts to businesses affected by the hurricane. While that sounds good, it makes no sense as nearly all businesses are insured and don't necessarily need the extra money to go back into operation. So how is this rather pointless tax cut going to be offset?

It's bad enough that W. doesn't have a sensible plan to deal with post-war Iraq. It is, after all, another country. But to be so totally out of touch with reality when an American region is involved, well that's just shameful.

And I don't even to get into his whole lottery plan for housing.

Who the fuck ever stated that war is "the greatest ever in all of history"? My grandpas name sure wasn't Hitler! This was an unfortunate thing that had to be done. There are a lot of brave souls, on both sides, that gave their lives to support policies they have little to no control over. War isn't something to be glorified.
I feel that three very diverse groups like the Kurds, Sunnis, and Shi-ites sitting down to a table and agreeing on a constitution should be glorified. Possibly one of the first times in Middle Eastern history that this type of situation has happened. Granted, the Sunnis are being a little reluctant but what is to be expected. They have had total control for so many years and now they're more less at the hospitality of their opposition. Federalism in the country with equal profit sharing of oil revenues is a very genorous offer from the other 80%.
Keep in mind also, I'm not lefty and I'm not righty either. Middle road with tilt to the right. No "So called Christian" governs my actions either...right along with the "tree huggers"! :D
