Can someone please tell me the advantages and disadvantages of Sodium and Flourescent lamps. I want to grow my plants as efficiently as possible. I was going to by another flourescent (gro-lux wide spectrum and standard)lamps, and was wondering if anybody can provide any info.

Thankx

CFL's...

PROS:

Cheap energy cost
Lower heat
Plant can be within inches of light
Provides shorter stem growth
Can be perfect temps (kelvin 6400) for veg growth.

CONS:

Easy to buy shitty lights
Works best on smaller grows
Can be expensive up front cost
Lots of cheapo units out there to fool you
Gernerally need a fan for each light or two

HPS:

PROS:

Most efficient light per watt
Perfect flower temps (2500-2700K)
Most closely simulates sunlight for flower
Can grow large lots with fewer lights because comes in High wattage.

CONS:

Not ideal for vegging temps (want 6400K)
Can be expensive inital setup
contains no UV Rays
can create high temp problems

lol, i always tell people, all you need for veg is regular, standard, cool white flouro's, as many as you want, and a regular hps ballast (sodium as you say) for flowering, preferably in conjunction with side flouro's or an mh, or both. ill take any bud from my 6 dollar, parking lot hps bulbs, and you wont be able to tell the difference from one grown under a fancy ass 100 dollar sylvania, grow-lux, who cares bulb. but if it makes you feel better, go spend the money.

With fluorescent lights the plant will grow yes. But the nodes will stretch and the spacing is larger. The bud surface area is less as well.
Under HPS Hortilux bulbs you can veg and flower. The nods are shorter and that makes for larger and tighter buds and increased surface area for resin production.
About the same thing HARRDON said.
