View Full Version : I'm adjusting my lighting system

Right now I have a dozen or so floros, 1 1000W HPS, and 1 100W HPS. I also have a kick ass window that is up so high no one (unless you were in a helicopter) can look into it.
I decided to take one of my plants and place it in the sunshine, instead of the grow room. I figured it would grow slower, since it would get less light, and it wouldn't be as bright. Turns out that it's growing faster than everything else in the grow room.
New schedule I'm gonna try:
4:00AM - 8:00AM = HPS lights
8:00AM - 6:00PM = sunlight only; HPS lights off
6:00PM - 12:00AM = HPS lights
I figure it'll cut down on my electricity costs by half, since I'll save from running the bulb for ten hours a day, on average. That's still 8 hours a day on HPS, and lots and lots of sun light coming through the windows. It might not work forever, but at least initially I think it will give me a good headstart.
Again, it's probably rare for me to have this setup; south facing windows that catch the sun so damn well and that no one could see in, but I think it just might work. I can't take pictures off it; if I showed the window you'd easily be able to judge the shape for the outside.

Hey whatever works.
Just make sure the "FASTER" growth is not translating into STEM growth.
I have planted indoor plants outside and seen the increase in growth but it is stem growth.
Keep an accurate log of a couple of indoor plants. Note the stem length between nodes and keep daily measurements on it.
The "head start" you are getting might not be the panacea you hope for.
Yet, like I said, whatever works.
HAPPY GROWING :)

Keep records for what.. the archives? high times is gonna come to you and ask for an accurate measurement between nodes on marijuana plants??...
Keep records if you want to, it's a hell of alot more work than you need to do...
After all.. it's just a god damn plant...

Don't get me wrong, i love my plants too. i'm in no way saying anything negative about the plant.
but i think people forget that these things.. aren't science projects. They are plants.. the require 3 essentials. light, water and co2.
put to much thought into growing and you'll just confuse the shit out of yourself. not to mention do more work than you need to.

In regards to stem growth versus foliage growth, that's part of the reason I'm so sold on regular sunlight. All of my plants that are sitting under the 1000W HPS grew maybe an inch up, and then dumped their baby leaves, and started growing for real.
The plants getting sunshine however, grew maybe half an inch, and started growing their real leaves days before. I don't know how to explain it.. they just look healthier. It's a few different factors.
The only thing I'm noticing about window light that I don't like so much is that the plants are straining towards the light, so every day I have to spin them 180 degrees. I think that will be taken care of by the morning / evening HPS lighting though; any pulling to one side that the plants do because of the sunlight coming through the window will be countered by the direct overhead light from the HPS.

Sunlight is INDEED superior to growing under an HPS.
Is it superior to full spectrum CFL?
I dont know but I would be hard pressed to find a happier result that what I have had.
And BobBong, its not just a fucking plant. Perhaps to you it is...
But to place your perceived value onto the property of someone else.........
I keep strict logs.
Daily height
Daily width
Node number
Water schedule
Nute Schedule
Transplant schedule
Light schedule
Fresh air schedule
I guess it all depends on what you are trying to accomplish.
I want to grow one hit blow my mind away stuff.
How can I know where I am going if I dont know where i have been?
I dont wanna grow weed.
I wanna grow the most potent weed I have ever smoked.
Sorry if my record keeping offends you... :(
HAPPY GROWING :)

wow... and all that record keeping gets you.. what? potent pot? you can write down all that shit, but it doesn't mean jack if you're growing shwag.
Record keeping does not equal potent weed... sorry... try again.
Potencey differs with strain kthnx.. not a bunch of daily little crayon doodles you do..
go read a book please.

I'm siding with HARDON on this one. I don't keep logs quite like that, but I definatly take a scientific approach to growing. I mean all those "strains" you may love so much were done by people who crossbred and crossbred until they got exactly what they wanted, and then made the strain pure, so you wouldn't have to do all the tedious note taking.
Personally I enjoy experimenting, and trying to figure out the best way for my plants to grow, because I don't want "weed". If I wanted "weed", I would spend $40 for an 1/8th of shit chronic (that is supposedly "good"), and go play some video games.
I want weed like I had in Amersterdam that was so potent and loaded with THC that it blew my fucking mind. For a minute I thought my brain was on fire; it was intense. I'm not going to get that unless I grow the proper strain, under proper conditions.
