Lanny's MAPP Newsletter
January 6, 2013 [HR] On January 17, 2008, the THCF Medical Clinic (http://marijuananews.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3ad9c34c3647fc7c1f237dc8f&id=0fbca13680&e=98fd4198da) opened in Riverside bringing the medical marijuana movement to the heartland of the Inland Empire. More than just a doctorâ??s office where IE residents could get a doctorâ??s recommendation to use marijuana, the THCF Medical Clinic became the focal point for organizing patients and supportive community members to protect the rights of medical marijuana patients under Prop. 215, the landmark initiative passed by the voters of California 12 years earlier in the historic 1996 election.

THCF Medical Clinic was one of a number of medical marijuana health centers operated by the Portland based Hemp and Cannabis Foundation (http://marijuananews.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3ad9c34c3647fc7c1f237dc8f&id=05b4114c15&e=98fd4198da). Today the THCF Medical Center has a new name â?? Presto Quality Care (http://marijuananews.us2.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=3ad9c34c3647fc7c1f237dc8f&id=08bcdd1005&e=98fd4198da).

The Marijuana Anti-Prohibition Project (MAPP) (http://marijuananews.us2.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=3ad9c34c3647fc7c1f237dc8f&id=db3930e9aa&e=98fd4198da), which began meeting in the Coachella Valley in December 1999 and was the only medical marijuana patient support group in the Inland Empire, immediately started holding regular meetings at the newly opened clinic.

Over the last five years the Clinic improved the health and well-being of IE residents by issuing over 5,000 recommendations. MAPP organized hundreds of patients to take on recalcitrant City Councils and County Boards who, at the behest of local police, refused to establish an orderly and regulated system of medicinal marijuana distribution.

Itâ??s been a tumultuous five years but medical marijuana has survived, grown and prospered with additional doctorâ??s offices opening and medical marijuana collective store-fronts and delivery services taking hold in almost every community.

And it all began with the opening of the THCF Medical Clinic five years ago. To commemorate the struggles, the progress, the heartaches and the triumphs, Presto Quality Care, the Marijuana Anti-Prohibition Project and the Brownie Mary Democratic Club (http://marijuananews.us2.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=3ad9c34c3647fc7c1f237dc8f&id=2a27be7d32&e=98fd4198da) are inviting the general public to celebrate and learn with an afternoon seminar and Honorary Dinner on Saturday, January 19. The events will take place at the offices of Presto Quality Care at 647 Main St., Riverside 92501.

Headlining the event will be medical marijuana icons Dennis Peron, the father of Californiaâ??s medical marijuana movement and Anna Boyce, the retired nurse who became the face of Prop. 215 appearing in TV commercials aired throughout the state.

Along with Mr. Peron and Ms. Boyce, there will be other speakers including SueAnn Young, chairperson of the Riverside County Democratic Central Committee, Paul Stanford, President & founder of the parent organization of Presto Quality Care and sponsor of the Oregon Cannabis Tax Act, the Oregon legalization initiative that didnâ??t quite make it but did receive a very respectful 46.5% of the vote and Lanny Swerdlow, RN, long time Inland Empire medical marijuana and law reform activist. Additional presentations by lawyers, cultivators and activists will also be on the seminar agenda.

In the evening the Brownie Mary Democratic Club will be sponsoring an Honorary Dinner for medical marijuana icons Dennis Peron, Anna Boyce and Paul Stanford. Keynote speakers are retired Superior Court Judge James Gray and famed 60â??s counterculture satirist Paul Krassner. Mr. Peron, Ms. Boyce and Mr. Stanford will be presented with lifetime achievement awards from very grateful patients. Judge Gray will make an informed presentation on the legal and political realities of today and Mr. Krassner will provide his famed classic satirical outlook on past and current political and social issues.

There is no charge for admission to the afternoon seminar which will run from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The Honorary Dinner for Dennis Peron and Anna Boyce begins at 6 p.m. Cost for tickets to the dinner are $20 for advance tickets and $25 day of the event. Seating is limited so advanced purchase is advised. Tickets available online http://prestoqualitycare.eventbrite.com (http://marijuananews.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3ad9c34c3647fc7c1f237dc8f&id=8cb0cc05a8&e=98fd4198da)
[HR] The election of delegates to the California State Democratic Party Convention (http://marijuananews.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3ad9c34c3647fc7c1f237dc8f&id=2a1659cf01&e=98fd4198da) is this Saturday, January 12 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. If you are a Democrat in the 42nd Assembly District, I can sure use your vote to elect me as a delegate if you can make it on down to the California Teachers Association offices in Palm Desert. You can vote for up to six men and six women candidates and I would encourage you to also vote for Michael Harrington and Ruth Debra. Other than that, donâ??t vote for anyone else unless you know of other candidates you want to support.
Whether you live in the 42nd Assembly District or not, whether you are a Democrat or not, I can use your help obtaining votes. I would like to have at least six people out front with me holding signs saying No More Drug War, Is Ending the Drug War Worth One of Your Votes?, Could Your Issue Use $50 Billion? as well as handing out slips asking for their vote. Most people donâ??t have six people in mind, but are usually coming because of just one or two candidates, so hopefully this display of support will garner one of their votes for my candidacy.

It would really be very very helpful if you could contact other Democrats in the 42nd District and let them know about the Democratic Convention delegate election and encourage them to join you in a delightful drive to Palm Desert to vote for me.

Yes, I am having a party at my home in White Water immediately following the vote so if you are coming to vote and/or help and plan to attend the party afterwards, please let me know so I can have an idea on just how many people I have to plan for. Send me an email at [email protected]. It would be so cool to have a whole lot of you at the party.

The California Democratic Convention delegate election takes place this Saturday, January 12 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the offices of the California Teachers Association at 75084 Gerald Ford Dr., Palm Desert CA 92211. If you need more info, call me at 760-799-2055 or send an email to [email protected].
[HR] In an article in the December 7 issue of Rolling Stone about the successful Colorado and Washington marijuana legalization initiatives, former top White House drug policy advisor Kevin Sadet was quoted saying, "As long as is vice president, we're very far off from legalization being a reality."
To let VP Biden know that such a position is an out of step with the majority of Americans and he should support, not oppose, the voters of Colorado and Washington, a We the People White House petition has been launched by the folks who put the marijuana legalization measure on the Colorado ballot. They need 25,000 signatures by January 9. A petition submitted with at least 25,000 signatures will get a response from the White House which will make VP Bidenâ??s support or opposition widely known.

I can assure you that the White House is keenly aware that marijuana got more votes in Colorado than did President Obama.

Currently the petition has about 20,000 signers so they are close, but there are only a few days left to get the remaining signatures. If you have not signed the petition, please do it now by CLICKING HERE (http://marijuananews.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3ad9c34c3647fc7c1f237dc8f&id=a0f0504595&e=98fd4198da). If you have not registered at the WhiteHouse.gov website, you can do so when you go to the website. It is easy and takes only a minute and then you can sign the petition to VP Biden telling him to get with the times. To do that now, CLICK HERE (http://marijuananews.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3ad9c34c3647fc7c1f237dc8f&id=ae0228ef4b&e=98fd4198da).
[HR] Politics and art converge at 6 p.m. on the Monday, January 7 broadcast and simulcast of Marijuana Compassion and Common Sense (http://marijuananews.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3ad9c34c3647fc7c1f237dc8f&id=21371d2eae&e=98fd4198da).
First guest up is Paul Stanford, marijuana political activist, prize-winning cultivator and founder of the Hemp and Cannabis Foundation (http://marijuananews.us2.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=3ad9c34c3647fc7c1f237dc8f&id=86fc47e441&e=98fd4198da) which started the THCF Medical Clinics, now known as Presto Quality Care. For the last 15 years, Paul has been trying to put the Oregon Cannabis Tax Act (OCTA) on the ballot. He finally succeeded in 2012. Learn about the long road to the ballot, what happened during the campaign and what will happen now that it is over.

Our 2nd guest is actor, writer and music reviewer PT Rothschild whose new book Memoirs of Mr. Pete & Mary Jane Green takes the reader on a front seat fun-house ride through decades of his music, pop culture, and politics with marijuana always faithfully at his side.

Hear Paul, PT and the usual gang this Monday, January 7 at 6 p.m. on Marijuana Compassion and Common Sense broadcast on IE Talk Radio station KCAA 1050 AM and simulcast at www.kcaaradio.com (http://marijuananews.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3ad9c34c3647fc7c1f237dc8f&id=3a27768706&e=98fd4198da). Tune in every Monday at 6 p.m. for news, views, humor and insightful interviews of informative guests on the subject dear to your existence â?? marijuana.

[HR] This Monday, January 7, I will be making a presentation at the monthly meeting of the SW Riverside County Democratic Club. I have been told that it should be a lively crowd as there is both strong support for marijuana legalization and equally strong support opposed to it. I think that is so cool because I donâ??t just want to preach to the choir.

The meeting is open to all â?? you do not need to be a Democrat to attend. The meeting on Monday, January 7 begins at 7 p.m. and is held at the Casa Jimenez Restaurant at 40535 California Oaks Rd. in Murriteta 92562. Food is available for purchase if you desire.

They are having some kind of officer election during the first part of the meeting. It is not necessary for you to be there at 7 p.m. if you would rather skip that part of the meeting. My presentation will start around 8 p.m. which works out well since I will be coming to the meeting after our radio show ends at 7 p.m. and I probably wonâ??t get there until 7:45 p.m. If you do want to attend, please do â?? itâ??s always pleasant to see some familiar faces.
[HR] I would like to thank the six people who made 2012 year-end donations to MAPP to support our ongoing and what seems to be never ending endeavors to allow patients to have safe, reliable and local access to medicinal marijuana, to bring an end to marijuana prohibition and to bring to its knees the inhumane, cruel and freedom destroying War on Drugs. It is your dollars that keeps our programs up and running and I am very appreciative of your support.
If you didnâ??t make a 2012 year-end donation, then how about a 2013 first-of-the-year donation? This is going to be a gung-ho year but just how gung-ho it will be in the Inland Empire depends on the availability of financial resources. Start your year and my year out right with a positive, life affirming, pride instilling statement about the importance of marijuana in your life by making a donation right now by CLICKING HERE (http://marijuananews.us2.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=3ad9c34c3647fc7c1f237dc8f&id=afdb499f27&e=98fd4198da).
