DENVER - The man in charge of fighting drug cartels, medical marijuana and drug dealers in Colorado, Wyoming, Utah and Montana is taking his battle to the East Coast.

Jeff Sweetin, the special agent in charge (SAC) of the DEA's Denver field division, has been promoted to head the international training center in Quantico, Virginia. While he is ready to take on a new challenge after eight years in Colorado, Sweetin says he will really miss Colorado.

"Absolutely the best years of my life; best law enforcement that I've ever worked with," Sweetin said. "I'll always think of myself as a Coloradan even though I wasn't born here."

Sweetin may be best known for his mini war with medical marijuana dispensaries in Colorado after the DEA raided a Highlands Ranch grow home and dispensaries in Denver and Colorado Springs. The raids prompted death threats against Sweetin and his wife. He says he has no regrets for what he did. Instead, he only regrets that the issue was never fully and fairly debated in public.

"This has stayed at such an emotional level that we have not been able to debate that and I think this state's worse off for it. I think voters have lost because of it, I think the people I leave behind, and I'm leaving two grown sons here, I think they're worse off because we weren't able to have that debate," Sweetin said.

During his time here, Sweetin has focused on cracking down on the Mexican cartel and the dope and cocaine that's carried into the area. He says that will remain a focus for his successor as well as the growing problem of abuse of pharmaceutical drugs.

The DEA has arrested several members of the drug cartels and extradited them in the last few years. And no agents were killed in the process, Sweetin said.

"I'm proud that we haven't lost anyone in the line of duty since I've been here and that's something to celebrate. Most of that credit goes to the people who work for me. But that's something that I'm taking with me. Is that people have gone home at night," he said.

A successor to Sweetin has not been named. The special agent in charge of training in Quantico resigned, so Sweeney expects to go there within the next couple week to begin work.

-->let's hope for a replacement that realizes they are in Colorado

I like the part about him getting "promoted." Them there are nice words for...ya blew it, you're moving on! Especially if the promotion involves a training center.

This is my happy dance:

That was uncalled for. Just because the man does the job he is paid to do does not make him a scum sucking pig. There are people in the state that do not like MMJ. So, to them are you the scum sucking, peice of crap drug dealer that is wrecking our state?

I do not have a problem with DEA or leo...I do have a problem with leo that has no regard for a constitutional amendment that our state has passed and goes around blatantly ignoring on the basis that he is better than our laws because he is Fed. My original post is in favor of him being replaced by a more upstanding officer that is here to protect our rights, not violate...so yes I stand by my original statement that Sweetin is a scum sucking pig that needs to go as well as many others that are out for there self serving purposes. Maybe your one of them to for all I care really.

Does not does matter what the state constitution says. Growing marijuana in Colorado is against federal law and he was doing what he was paid to do. And I will stick by my comments that some non mmj people think that mmj people are the scum and nothing but a low life drug dealer. So if you use or grow mmj does that make you a scum or a low life drug dealer? No. Nor is he a scum sucking pig for doing his job.. A job he took an oath of office for, is paid to do and expect to do

the difference is his boss told him to respect states that have mmj laws. He should be fired for insubordination. People thy think people who use mmj is scum is completely irrelevent and a horrible point...the majority of people in this state support mmj for 1. Second, there are plenty of people from many different industries that are in my eyes scum and are seen that way by many. So why should I care about what some random person feels about my usage of mmj to treat my pain? And no I am not a drug dealer, I don't even grow let alone sell or distribute

*shrug*

I'll take the contrarian position. Has he ever shut down a dispensary or arrested a single patient? Not to my knowledge. Let's hope his replacement shows similar restraint, discretion and good judgement; I don't believe many Federal agents would.

ANY Government official that spreads lying propaganda to further an agenda that puts people in jail is a scum sucking pig as far as I'm concerned.

Hey guys! I'm new here to Colorado but kept close tabs on the laws and progress this state has made in the last year or two. Like someone said, he's doing his job. I have nothing against the guy....he didn't mess with patients. He did arrest that idiot who went on TV and showed his MASSIVE grow. You just don't do that. You do not taunt (going on TV showing off your grow) your opponent (DEA). You gotta respect your opponents and everyone else's opinion. Colorado is taking the right steps towards reform and will only get stronger throughout the years. We as residents of this state need to take this time and somehow gain leverage. There are smart people in these groups like Brian Vicente who can exploit the lawmakers' mistakes.

IT IS VERY IMPORTANT to remember, that even the dumbass that went on tv does not deserve the 40 YEARS that he may get. We must stand up for the idiots, too. THEY make case law!

I'm assuming you'll agree that pertains to government propaganda as it relates to all other drugs too.

I'm not gonna say that all cops are fucked up, but a good 98 percent of them have made decisions in their career that shoudln't have bene made and they will never be punished at all. They break the same laws we do and don't have to respond to anyone for it. I'm just pissed because I got a speeding ticket on the way home tonight...

Maybe you should change your mood from "cheerful" to "aggressive" or at least something less cheery! :D

In Ned we are blessed to have an enlightened former head of a DEA task force as town Marshall.

Not all LEO are created equal. I think when the real change happens and this culture of fear is removed, we may find real people with view similar to ours in all walks of life and including the DEA.

I really look forward to the day when MMJ patients and caregivers (and marijuana people in general!) don't live in fear of the DEA. How does that enlightenment happen, and how do we spread it?

yes, however the dea has been intentionally campaigning over the years about how bad mj is when they know full well that there is nothing wrong with it. all this with one purpose... to keep it illegal so the money giant (the justice system) can keep raking in the doe. i should not be illegal in the place. so in that regard they are asshole drones, following orders does not excuse one from moral obligations.
