these plants vegged for about 4 weeks before putting into the bloom room! i use fox farm ocean forest soil mixed 50/50 w/chunky coco coir..helps drainage and is stable with ph!
fed base nutes of botanicare pro-bloom soil and a few advanced nutrient products. i do give my girls bushmaster on day 1 or 2 of bloom only once at a rate of 3ml/gal
i should have trimmed more off of the bottoms before blooming as i have a jungle going on! i little tighter than i like it....still learning how these LED's grow bigger plants than HID lighting. I'll have to get some photos of transplanting...the root masses are incredibly increased! :stoned:
the first photos are at day 21

Great job with those LEDs! I want to get some big LEDs like those but for now im stuck with my 90w and 660nm spotlight. What color is that middle red panel?

Goes to show what LED's can do...
I have been looking into them as supplemental lighting and now that i see these beautiful ladies i will have to look more into them.
Did you build those panels yourself or purchase them?
Thanks:jointsmile:

i like the power of the 3w LED's and the spread design over the "1w panels" or UFO lighting...it wasn't totally easy to pull my 2 1000w HPS out...took time to gain confidence or i should say if you watch your plants close enough they tell you what they like!

i am still at a loss here. i see what they are doing, and it looks okay. but i've seen buds under an HID put on much more weight from day 20 'til day 40. that was under a 400W HPS. not to mention you are running 9 lights that cost $450+ a piece. i just don't see the savings or benefit as of right now.
9*450= $4050!!!!!! and i'm pretty sure the procyons cost more than $450 each.
i'm not knocking your grow, the plants look good. everything is straight. i'm just not ready to jump on the band wagon just yet. i mean if LEDs were the way to go EVERYONE would be using them. again, i think we are getting closer with the 3W LEDs. (are those wide or narrow skirt?)
if dealing with head is an issue i completely understand, but other than that i'm not ready to get rid of my HID just yet. not to mention, homemade arrays can be built MUCH cheaper!
i would love to play with some LEDs and do a side by side comparison. i'm the type that has to get my hands dirty, ya know?
keep up the good work my friend and keep pushing the envelope. eyes are starting to open.

i do have a fair amount invested...the procyons were more like $600 ea
if you are just looking at this current grow i left too much on the bottoms this grow...as i said still learning how to max the bloom...last run was really good quality :stoned:
i am saving an average of $200/mo in power and not replacing (2)1000w Hort's every other grow at approx $500/yr...1 year i have saved $2900 in costs that have to go out to keep the grow going irregardless and i do admire all of the folks that have built there own because LED's life is over 10 years of 12/12 and in that time that is $29000 of bulbs and power that i saved.

Those are some solid figures, but again, with shake, I have nowhere near the funds to get 9 $450-$600 plus lights, but like my previous post, amazing nugs, definitely looks like a nice smoke.

thanks bro....it took me time..i did not get them all at once...i started by converting my veg side to LED first...depending on your needs after seeing a few who have built there own it really is not that expensive.....and in time the cost are recouped IF you get good LED's...the light brite models and etch-a-sketch ones are a waste of time and money. my big investment came when i decided to pull my 1000's out but i sold them on ebay for what 2 of the lights cost so i did some creative financing to do what i did.

Growing is an expensive hobby....it takes alot to get a good inital grow setup started. And it takes alot of money to maintain it.
I'm very interested in trying the LED lights....it makes sense, since it will save a huge amount on electricity and help immensely with heat issues especially in the summertime! I'll be starting another grow cycle in the middle of march....i'm hoping to start this time with an LED light....your pics are more than convincing!

i am trying to decide....i am thinking of taking them down this sunday on day 56 for this batch....going to China in 3 weeks so that kind of crunches drying time to get this crop taken care of before i leave!

Very, very impressive, I'm becoming more and more interested in the idea of LED's a little further down the road. Who are the more reputable manufacturers of these types of lighting? How rapidly does anyone think the technology will move this kind of lighting? Where and with what would you recommend someone begin using this kind of lighting in their grow rooms?
Thanks!

there are many manufacturers out there some good....some selling snake oil!
my first purchases were the procyon 100's~ i liked the information i found regarding Cree LED's before i purchsed...but they are small and about $600 each...i looked at the TI smart bar which is a good light according to articles i read in High Times but almost $1800 for 330w....ouch! eventually i found these lights and i put 450w of light for $1350 on each of my trays but i started using them just to grow with before using them in flower:jointsmile:

next pictures will be the trimmed buds hanging in the cabinet!

my next project is going to Beijing China in 2 weeks for my second round of stem cell injections....Spinal cord injury from snow skiing...so i am hoping but have doubts that this site will be accessible to me while i am in China...the crop will be tended to while i am gone....so i may be missing in action for about 3 weeks until i get back! :hippy:

I love it when people say "You can't do this!" and you do. Tasty serving of crow for 'em!
The only thing I wish you could do (You've got pretty good spectrum) is have a way to raise and lower those lights, it will help greatly in controlling your plant height, plus allow you deeper penetration. You'll yield much more with just a foot or two drop, if those focusing cups allow for it while still maintaining a useful blend.
Looks so awesome. That's how you apply the microeinsteins!

hey Iryd~no worries...you did not know...thanks for your good words and well wishes and likewise ForgetC
khyb~i did lower my light after having small chat with 'shake and not really pleased with the last run from 3 weeks to 6 weeks...which is when i lowered the lights about a foot closer and started seeing better results..also left too much on the bottoms as it got so thick that the light had hard time penetrating to the bottom layers....still a learining curve from the HPS methods....learning to water less...which is retraining in itself once you have habit of watering in certain timeframes having to break them and learn the patience in between watering.
with any grow or strain it is a trial and error until you get things dialed in...which is why i kept wondering why my second run was excellant yield with the lights in the old height...then it occured to me that i gave that batch a bigger shot of bushmaster in the beginning almost 6ml/gal...i was at the end of a bottle and i had seen a friends grow that had used more on one section and the plants were noticeably stockier with fatter buds so instead of leaving a small amount to be mixed with new bottle i just gave it all to them so my next batch that i will do is going to get the new doseage of bushmaster!:stoned:

Indeed on the LED's, just wish they could be made for the not-so-funded kinda people. Oh well, I probably could get a job during college, but I'm in my critical semesters at college and need to focus on my studio. Will definitely be looking into some sort of LED lighting in the future. And the good news is, you'll be back for the holiday.

Hey on the next grow do us a favor document it. Everyone likes to see but to documentation is experience for everyone as well as evidence for the skeptics.
Document the following and include the day number of veg and flower
Height of lights
Nutrients type used, quantity, and when.
When you water and quantity
Medium used
Weight weight then dry weight
Of course lot more pics
Any thing else you can think of or experience.
I know it is a lot of work but hey it is not like your getting paid for it :)
Thanx

i will do a thorough grow log when i get back from China....i will be starting a new tray then....typically i plant my clones into the square peat pots and veg them in those for about a week then i repot to 2 gal sq pots veg for at least 2 or 3 weeks...usually 2....if i have more than 16 potted i pick the best 16 and leave the few behind to veg further and take cuts from them...i am the clone station for a few of my friends:D
i plant clones into straight fox farm ocean forest soil and when i repot i use a 50/50 mix of ocean forest and chunky coco....i am considering going to a straight coco to have more consistency of drainage because it seems in mixing you always have some pots that hold more water than others so i am thinking of trying a straight coco to use for my 2 gal pots..i do a quasi-hydro system in that i have a 4 gallon bucket with a pump and i have feed lines to each pot.
when repotting i sprinkle mychorizzea into the holes i put the peat pots into and water with straight water...before putting them into flower i will give them some voodoo juice and another shot of mychorizea with hygrozyme and carbo load...i will give specifics when i do a complete log..keep a notebook:thumbsup:
one day 1 of flower i hit them bushmasterand they will only stretch about 1/3 of their heigh and will stack nodes better
then i use botanicare pro bloom soil/coco 30ml/gal...AN kushie kush 5ml/gal...wet betty 5ml/gal...carbo load 2ml/gal...bud candy 5ml/gal..5ml/gal hygrozyme and 1ml/gal rhino skin as ph up
that is my weekly feed formula and at week 6 i stop the kushie kush and start using Overdrive 10ml/gal for 2 weeks then flush within 7 - 10 days of harvest and last watering of carbo-load and bud candy only before take down!
As i metioned i will do a more thorough log and record veg/flower time, watering...pictures(need a better camera)..and as much info as i can share...then it will be a show for all to see!:smokin:
and thanks btf and fc for the props...yes and back in time for our holiday:thumbsup:

yeah..CO2 is next on my agenda on maxing out yield...a propane model is only $360...and i am heating so it would help with that!
it took me a while to find these...they were originally designed for supplemental lighting in commercial greenhouses and are rated to be hung as high as 13' above the plants...so if i am at 13" or less i thought to myself these will be the LED's to change opinions....so i got a few to add to with HPS and when my plants were leaning to the 150w LED light away from my 1000w HPS i took the chance and got enough to do my flower room and take the 1000's out...it was a little nervy that day but after a few weeks of watching them flower i knew i made the right choice....and after smoking my product...well that was the real kicker...joints burn twice as long...more legs to the meds also...so for any serious med user i highly recommend learning LED growing!

here is a few more shots of some finished product and the next tray @ 24days...lights are 29" from the bottom of the plants...if i put them any lower i will hit the lights with the stakes taking them out. i have 4 gallon buckets that i marked for single gallons to try and monitor how much water i am using. 4 gallons under 1000's for 16 plants would go fast..now i have to be more careful not to overwater!

this week i marked my 4 gallon buckets i use to water with at single gallons so i can monitor how much water i am giving...so this week they only got 4 gallons total 1 gallon at a time for 16 plants once on monday then wednesday and mixed some nutes and fed them the other 2 gallons yesterday. using GH nutes micro, bloom, and kool bloom this go round so it will be easy for my babysitter while i am gone for a few weeks!
also have run exhaust on full blast to increase cirulation and lower humidity to help transpiration...this round looksa mucxh better as i trimmed alot of the bottom growth so it is not so thick...the lower branches are getting better light and showing better bud development this time...i'm very pleased with what i see this time:smokin:
and thanks all who have stopped and given comment! Irish..very familiar with GP...maybe after i get back we can talk!

hey str8, a proxy server is a computer that sits in between you and the host of the website that you are going too, eg cannabis.com. so when you (your computer) sends a request instead of going directly to cann.com it goes to the proxy server. then the proxy server tries to connect to cann.com. cann.com returns the request to the proxy and the proxy passes it on to your comp. this doesn't bypass firewalls exactly, but what it does is instead of your computer trying to connect to a blacklisted site, it connects to the proxy and not directly to the blacklisted site, and he information coming back to you, in the form of packets, show the proxy address in the packet header, and not the blacklisted site, so the information is allowed to pass.
hope that made sense and didn't confuse you. or in summation, the info comes from the proxy and not the blacklisted site, therefor there is no reason for the information to be blocked. this also keeps the site you are trying to access from seeing you, as you never actually directly connect to it.
ladies look very nice by the way!

here is something i thought i would share...just got email from my mfr of my lights and i think it was Headshake who mentioned something about 5w LEDs
Currently all 5W leds are made by multiple chips, not single chip. As soon as single chip 5W leds are available, we will use them as well.
that is where it is from the manufacturing side so 3w LED is as big as they go right now:thumbsup:
khyberkitsune
04-02-2010, 01:23 AM
They might not be able to get the single-chip 5W emitters at a reasonable price for the quantity you're moving. Alibaba and Aliexpress have tons (most are white LEDs but there are some horticulturally-suitable diodes to be found.)
That's the issue I'm having acquiring 3w diodes, especially with my emission pattern. I'm not moving enough volume to do more than get enough for prototyping at my current budget.

no i have finished 3 complete runs and i am learning from each one....by tweeking i am going to try straight coco as Weezard has highly recommended it as he has very nice LED grows and learning that you don't need to water as much...so a learning process but my yields have been very close to what i had with 1000w HPS...the only grow that i have not surpassed was the ones i did with both HPS/LED when i first used them as supplemental lights but i noticed how the plants leaned to the LED's and not the HPS even though i had new bulbs in.....so i took the leap of faith and jumped....and there is no going back in my mind it is the best decision i have made

I was wondering if you started using co2?
I am curious how extra co2 works with the LED's.
Does the room get hot enough so the plants start working harder, drinking more and growing faster?
Has the co2 helped? You changed strains so i guess you won't really know. I always change strains too. I would love to focus on one strain but I get board.
After researching LED's I learned it would be really easy to build one. You might want to look into that.
Nice Work!!!

i did add a CO2 generator before i left for China but it was in long enough for me to get things somewhat dialed in but i have it running on a timer..i have a controller/monitor wating at the house for me to install and i know that will help keep the CO2 at optimum levels...so i will get to see where my 2nd tray is as it was just in the first few day of flower before i left. So I will see tomorrow when i get home and i will be snappin some bud porn fo sho!!! I love OG SFV and that is what I primarily grow it is such a kick ass strain that it is hard to not grow it. I have a few other quality strains i keep going also.
yes it may be easy to build and fun but i really don't have the time and i like the construction of the LED lights i have...solid and well built! Plus it costs about $3/watt just for materials to build and you still need to design it! So i like mine as they are ready to plug in and run out of the box for that cost so i think i did good in finding these:smokin:
demoreal
04-07-2010, 12:42 PM
So you can compare this OG harvest to the last I take it?
That would be very interesting.
If you can lead me in the direction of where to get those 3$ a watt LED I would love to design and build one. That is the kind of stuff I do in school so I might as well do something useful instead of a bunch of old school physics labs. Those are cool too just not very practical to me.
It would be fun to design one especially picking out all the right spectrum diodes.

Ready to buy Light for flower closet. I really like the low heat of T-5 & Led
Thinking either 4' x 8 bulb T-5 -or- current version of the "Procyon" 90w
Been told the T-5 is to weak for flowering??
Also.. R there ufo's that work 90w????
Any advise would be Awesome Thx MeRkAbA

T5 works fine for flowering, though if you want HUGE plants you are likely better off running the tubes vertically rather than just hanging them over the plants.
Plenty of UFOs that work - if you find ones with the right balance of spectrum. Considering everybody is hung up on the proven-inefficient 'NASA-Spec' lights, you won't find many with better ratios of light.

Thanks for input. My only concern with LED off Ebay is getting one thats
more like a spotlight.. as opposed to a broadcast.. Almost pulled the trigger
on one with cree lights usa? I think.. at the bottom in small print
said is was good for up to 2 plants.. figured it was spot light type..
Dont want that.. 180.00
Is there an original ufo light manufac??
Feel like I cant go wrong with the "procyon" but,Expensive..
Any info on "haight" LED lights would be nice..

I don't know about an original UFO manufacturer. And bunches of ebay lights are the narrow-angle (spotlight) type diodes. most of the actual UFO panels will be of the wide-angle variety, though.
If you want to try catching me online, I'm on AIM, Yahoo, and Skype! I'll have my laptop with me out near the grill, just fire a message to me and we can do a bit of research. my nickname is the same on those im services as it is here.

My T5HO lights are from HTG - I'm quite familiar with their lineup, and also their slightly incorrect marketing and 'facts,' as I have had to discover first-hand from products they say they 'are OUR lights.' I had to ditch their tubes and go with some specialty AgroMax bulbs.
You bought the UFO with massive amounts of red, very little blue, and then white diodes to boot to act as 'full spectrum' when in reality that phosphor on the diode only emits a tri-band peak that is NOWHERE near full spectrum. They're using the 430nm diodes which they claim is at the highest peak but in reality that peak lies higher in the blue range, at least for photosynthetic processes. The shorter wavelength is useful for triggering other processes in the plant, but not as efficiently.
It'll be okay but I doubt it will be as good as they claim.

Okay Str8 Im doin it!!!!! im goin LED. I need to ask you some questions first!
Okay so first question. I dont have a huge set up and at the moment am not looking to grow more than 2 plants right now. I have done some reaserch on the whole Light Emitting Diode (LED) thing, But can I get away with getting a smaller LED light fixture and still have the same yeild on one plant?? I think I can but not sure...AND, What color lite do I use, blue, red, yellow, purple, orange, white, a combo of blue and red???? SO many COLORS!!!!! BUT from the looks of things on your end you look like you know what your doin.
Also do you still use a liteing schedual? 18-6 for veg? 12-12 for flower?
The hole reason for lite sched is for the proces of photosynthisis to occure, but with the LED the plant is allowed to photosynthasize as long as the lites are on and the right color/colors is used. So Im wondering if you use a different lite sched or the same. I gues Im just confused. Also very excited to get this whole LED thing goin!!!!!!!!

Great informative thread, I registered to this forum to subscribe to THIS thread.
I recently got my card, so I've been doing my research on LED lighting for all the obvious perks. I was afraid to make the leap (especially on reading the MOUNDS of negative comments over the last 2+ years) but it finally looks like people are having success with LEDs...especially since the new tech has been out.
Thanks for posting this! I'll be on the LED wagon soon thanks to this thread.

Hey, Stra8 - heads up for you. New wholesale smoke shops popping up have LEDs in them (and nowhere near your quality, I saw a mimic of your unit that BURNED MY HANDS ON TOUCH not 45 minutes ago.)
Keep your eyes open, there's opportunity to show more than the internet that LEDs are now mainstream-ready.
BTW Cree just popped out a new white diode at 200+ lumens per watt of input power. HPS just got destroyed if they can get that quantum-dot efficiency out of monochromatic LEDs using the same tech. That means (without the QD phosphor layer) we could be seeing an equivalent unweighted 230lux/w radiometric power. GOODBYE HID.

They look super cool, amazing the evolution of them. Truly inspirational for us "other" growers. I do have a point/question/suggestion. If you had those strips also at mid level and canopy level but dialled in so they were less tahn above to avoid strange stretching would you get more at canopy level. I truly believe if you had some horizontal supplemental lighting your yield would be double or therabouts.

thanks...i am running the 8week schedule and yes i will be applying the Top Booster on week 5....since a packet of Shooting Powder is more than i need to finish one grow i did give the current grow 1/2tsp/gal of Shooting Powder just to see how they react to a small dose...the feed formula calls for 1tsp/gal then 2tsp/gal the last 2 weeks....and i beleive it has helped them pack on some weight...but i will know more as i complete the first tray on the entire formula

Do the plants require a mixture of light or can you simply use one colour during each stage? I mean can you use only blue light at 460nm for the veg stage and then red light at 660 nm for the flowering stage? Or do you need a bit of blue light during the veg stage as well?
Thanks.

the main needs of a plant are reds and blues so it is not a good idea to do one color only...in either flower or veg...you need both for a healthy plant:thumbsup:

Ahh so traditional MH and sodium lamps produce light in both wavelengths? So during flowering do you use LED lights with more red in them and during veg you use more blue, or you just use a mixed light for both?
Thanks for the help, think i'll have a few more questions no doubt. I wrecked my spine a few months back and buying my medicine is costing a fortune.

actually i run the same amount of blue in each flower and veg...the reds are not as critical in veg as 630nm will work but will not perform well in flower...a deeper red of 660nm is needed for good performance in flower:jointsmile:

I see, so you can use the same lights in veg and flower you just need the appropriate red spectrum. So if you were running your grow via clones you could keep your mother plants alive with the same lights used in the flowering phase?
What would you recommend regarding ratio of red to blue? I see some companies selling 8:2 (red:blue) and 7:1 (red:blue).
Sorry for so many questions :)

dm~mine are a full spectrum and 3w diodes...so i think it does help in covering the fringe spectrum needs...i have noticed that plants under the light with 80% 630nm reds do not have as large of flowers as the lights with more 660nm deep red. So i have taken it out and put one of the full spectrum models in its place and after this run i will replace the other one in this tray also

thanks GP :D
dm~mine are a full spectrum and 3w diodes...so i think it does help in covering the fringe spectrum needs...i have noticed that plants under the light with 80% 630nm reds do not have as large of flowers as the lights with more 660nm deep red. So i have taken it out and put one of the full spectrum models in its place and after this run i will replace the other one in this tray also
Full spectrum? Does that include some UV light as well?
Would a grow suffer from being provided only 460nm and 660nm light?

if you look at Weezard's albums he has built his own units using only 660/460 and has done quite well!

Man stra8 them babe's look so nice. I tried to get you on yahoo, but took too long for the page to load. Id like some info on the lights and i know ya got it. Might need to change up a few things if i move and heat is my big issue, so LED would solve that.
Anyway il catch up with you at some point here and im not in a rush now with my outdoor getting ready to go out. Got cold as heck here this weekend, so that put me a couple days behind, but im cool.

thanks for checking out my thread...i would mainly say look for 660nm in the red and 440-460nm in the blue...those are the most important colors...the 660nm reds are the more expensive of the diodes

Thanks for such a quick reply !
I understand the light thing a bit better now. Im very worried about buying a dodgy one of ebay. This being because I could buy this from a shop Quality LED Grow Lighting Online Shop 300w 120w 90w 50w 15w - Grow Light UK - Store (http://www.growlightuk.com/tabid/58/ProductID/7/Default.aspx) which i would think is the real thing or i could buy of ebay from honk kong :S hong kong being the home of imitations im not too sure ? pay an extra £100 or buy a cheap one ! What would you do ? Did you buy yours of ebay ?
sorry about all the questions but i really wana get my own led grow show going ;)

unless you find a specific model on ebay i would stay away from buying just price unless it is going to be strictly a veg light....i checked the link and i would ask how many 660 reds...if less than 50% then keep looking:thumbsup:

back again ! ok I think i found the best option, these are hand built to order but i'm still not sure which other options i need apart from the extra 660 nm's. Which options would you select ? (all options at the bottom of the page) 120w led grow light | CTLEDLIGHT.CO.UK (http://www.ctledlight.co.uk/120w-led-grow-light)
advice much appreciated :D

Looking great.
Would love to see ya do a heavily indica grow with the LED's. You've got me curious, but startup cost is too high right now. Just spent a year saving for a Vapor Tower for my wife...would be somewhere around June 2015 before I could save enough for LED's, lol.
Good job though.

Str8......those girls really are all woman!!! As you know, I am a very new newbie lol, so always doing the reading and researching bit, and I am very much liking your LED grow! Until reading your log, I had kinda skipped by the LED threads. Almost wish I had read them before planning our setup! But maybe I'm too keen and need to get a few grows under my belt before looking at buying LEDs myself. By then I might understand more about the LED system, not being very technical minded I would probably end up with the shittiest LEDs available lol. I've had a tentative look at some LEDs available on a certain auction site here in the UK for future reference, but none appear to have the same 'power' as your ones, and seem a bit cheap in price compared to the costs of yours....as I say, I am not technical minded though. When the time and the finances are right, I'd love to have a go with LEDs........and maybe by then someone will have written a 'dummies guide' to growing with them lol. Now there's a little earner for you.....get your pen and notepad ready Str8 lol

what's good bro? the buds look amazing. what's going on with all the fans though? you've got a lot of discoloration and downward curl. i'm not knocking you, just curious....as we all know, we don't smoke the fans. just my scientific mind at work.
also, is there a piece of glass on the bottom of the LEDs? if so, i wonder how it effects the output. not much obviously, but it has to have some. also, i wonder how much this would effect UV transmission.
keep up the good work bud. i think i might be using one of your lights soon!

this is why i am switching to a straight coco....with soil some pots are dried out and others get too much water and the fans get droopy...plus this batch was taken care of by a friend in the beginnig and it got over watered in the beginning and it has been a struggle to be honest...but i think it is turning out ok! :D

My fan leaves always look jacked by the end of a grow. I have no idea how to keep them looking good. It does not happen till the last few weeks. Luckily the close up leaves stay happy. I always try to keep the fans happy the last few weeks, but I fail...

i hear ya loud and clear Weeze. i know these specific LEDs are monochromatic (he's not using white's at all is he?) i was just thinking that getting through the extra glass (or plexiglass) would eat up some of the energy.
the UV statement should have been posed as it's own independent query. i obviously wasn't very thorough. bad shake!

It can be done, but is not advisable.
Give 'em a steaming heap of nitrogen and they'll stay green.
They will also taste green.:p
Senescense is natures way.

How do you pull this off with your setup? Have you noticed anything noteworthy by giving it this last darkness? I'm always skitchy when things go against mother nature, just curious if you have reason or if it's just how you've always done it.
Looking mighty fine BTW, would love to blaze a fatty with ya:thumbsup:

i just let the room go dark for 2 cycles basically...this stops any photosynthesis and need for nitrogen in the plant in the final moments of its life and giving your end product a smoother flavor...the buds also swell a bit more in the darkness
i never noticed any harm to the plants in the other tray by giving them the extra dark period.

That was my worry. I was wondering how 2 days of dark would affect plants around day 30 of flower.
